Strange Faces Define Lo-Fi

Stonerism is due out on December 11th via Autumn Tone Records.

Sloppy Rocker from Vamos + Austin Show @ Hotel Vegas

vamosI don’t know too much about Vamos, other than the Chicago trio just recently released a blast of a record, Spiderbait.  It’s this meld of punk rock with bits of sloppy party rock thrown in; it’s basically the sound of three guys blasting out a good time.  It’s one of those songs you just want to turn up real loud, bounce around your room and sing into your hairbrush (is that just me?). The group will be blowing into Austin on August 26th (Hotel Vegas) to support the record, so I wanted to make sure those locals that follow us are keeping an eye on what’s coming their way. Pleased to Meet You: Ne-Hi

neehighFeel like it’s been rather slow as of late with the music coming our way, which is fair enough for the time of year.  So, when I got sent this Ne-Hi track, I was stoked, to say the least.  Upon first listen, it reminds me of a relaxed version of The Feelies, using great rhythm to propel the song forward, whilst employing these slightly angular guitar chords and semi-chanted lyrics.  The Chicago outfit is about ready to head out on a nice little nationwide tour in August, including an Austin date on August 24th. Check this new hit out.

Shimmery Dream Pop From Savage Sister

savage sisterSavage Sister are a three part outfit from Chicago that make dream pop and shoegaze music. I stumbled upon this track, “Pale Surrender” and knew I had to share it with you all, as this is the perfect song to turn up loud on a Friday. Drenched in reverb, the whole tune seems to just barely waft in through your speakers; the high pitched synths dominate the track, but as it progresses you get some more of the percussion in the mix, as well as the incomprehensible vocals, which work as another instrumental element to the sound. Savage Sister have an album in the works called Speechless, but the date is TBA, so keep an ear out.

Check This New Clip Art Tune

clippThis Clip Art tune came in yesterday, trying to erase the dreary weather outside my window today (kind of beautiful actually).  There’s an inherent brightness to the music being crafted by the group, filling in the negative space with various little elements,  be it samples or oddball percussive accents.  Personally, I’m digging how the song seemingly moves in and out throughout, sometimes providing a nice bounce, while other times pulling back to a relaxing explosion of pop sensation. You’ll find this song on Culler, the new record from the project that’s slated for a March 31st release date.

SXSW Interview: Typesetter

SXSW Interviews: Genevieve

Shoegaze Craze With Star Tropics

1554348_588335547943054_2733155565290083228_nStar Tropics, who hail from Chicago, have been somewhat quiet since they first emerged in 2013, but now now they’re back and you should be jumping for joy. Why, you may ask? Because this band is creating killer shoegaze music that is bound to be big. Below, you have the infectious duo of this band’s first studio tracks in two years, and they certainly do not disappoint. First up is “Summer Rain,” which has infectious dream pop hooks all throughout, accompanied with bombastic percussion and dueling male/female vocals that will crush you with sunshine. “Swept Away,” is pretty special as well, allowing for the addition of jingly-jangly percussion and those glossy guitars that don’t quit. I’m telling you, this band is special, and they should be at the top of your watch list of up-and-comers.

King Louie from Chiraq

king-louie-gChicago-native King Louie, sometimes known as King L, is considered part of the Chiraq (pronounced Shy-Rack) movement in hip-hop, though he continues to put out a considerable amount of uncharacteristically Chiraq music. Most Chiraq music has loud, abrasive beats paired with loud, ultra violent, often gang-affiliated gangsta rap (think Chief Keef), but a number of King Louie’s songs are almost the complete opposite; subtle, smooth, relaxed, and slow (though he has plenty of characteristically Chiraq music). His appearance on Chance The Rapper’s brother Taylor Bennett’s single “New Chevy” was indicative of this, as well as his more recent song “Right Now”. King Louie performed at SXSW the last two years, so there’s a high possibility he’ll be in town again next month. “Right Now” can be downloaded for free via Audiomack or streamed below.
