Last Week’s Jams (2.20 – 2.24)

Even after taking off Monday, we managed to get tons of coverage out there. I was stoked to hear that new Cindy song that I had been promised late last year. RayRay started pushing some of our SXSW introductions out with Pendant and Orions Belte. A handful of Austin acts tossed out new tunes, so check in on Hallo, Space Tan and Transy Warhol…a few who will be playing our just announced ATH vs SOTO SXSW Party. Plus, I got a bonus add by getting an excuse to post a little Braid to this site, on top of including my favorite releases of the week for streaming purposes. Get at it below.

Cindy Announce Why Not Now LP

For all the bands that the masses adore, it makes zero sense to me that Cindy isn’t up there in that upper echelon of indie rock. Perhaps they’re too careful or too quiet, but I’ll be damned if I’m not going to continue to immerse myself in everything they do musically. The video below accompanies the news that the band will release Why Not Now on April 14th, which will likely continue to spin at my house throughout the entirety of the year. There’s something about how the band feel so studied in their craft; there’s not a single note that seems out of place, as if they’ve structurally engineered the perfect pop song. It moves slowly, sure, but carries this solemnity in its melody that I find magnetic. If you’ve not been able to indulge in this band, then by all means, stop waiting. Why Not Now will come out via Mt. St. Mtn. and Tough Love Recordings.

Persona Share Track from Typical Girls 6 Compilation

A few weeks ago we brought you news that Typical Girls 6 was on its way, premiering the striking new track from Cindy. Today, we’ve got another track from UK outfit Persona, with another powerful performance to entice you grab a copy of the album. This song appeared earlier on the band’s Persona EP, but here we get another chance to celebrate the band’s approach to songwriting. Raquel’s aim is to make something weird, according to the bio, using the guitar in a variety of manners to create a sound that stretches our expectations of what rock n’ roll can truly be. It’s a thoughtful poetic motivation, with the guitar sound gently ticking in the background like a metronome keeping pace for us. Typical Girls 6 will be out this Friday via Emotional Response Records, so grab one before they’re all gone!

We’re hoping that the long-running Typical Girls series from Emotional Response is on your radar; it’s a collection dedicated to all the incredible women in the independent music scene, with a little nod to the Slits. Today, we get bonus good news, as not only has the label announced Typical Girls Vol. 6, but they’ve done it by letting us share this incredible new gem from San Francisco’s Cindy, who we’ve raved about for several years. Honestly, I was looking for the perfect description, but songwriter Karina seems to have captured the sentiment perfectly, saying this songs feels “like there’s room built into the structure to move around in as a listener;” it’s a sentiment that resonates with the band’s powerful pop presence coinciding with the striking simplicity at hand, all of it creating this huge emotional weight that soaks you. Typical Girls Vol. 6 will be out on October 28th, with other heavy hitters like The Linda Lindas, Lande Hekt, Fake Fruit and more taking part. Grab it from Emotional Response today!

Honestly, I’m pretty over lists at this point. They’re arbitrary and don’t really reflect anything but someone’s tastes, except here where they reflect the tastes of three individuals…because that’s how we roll. So, take this list with a grain of salt. These are the records we thought were the best, which mostly just means these are the ones we listened to on repeat throughout the year! Last Week’s Jams, Today (September 27 – October 1)

Mondays, am I right? Honestly, been struggling for energy and motivation of late, but last week had some really great tunes hit, accompanied by great albums from the likes of Semihelix, Cindy and Ducks Ltd. I chose to open with this Semihelix on the mix because I’d love to take the opening 30 seconds and put it in my pocket to carry it around with me all day. Last week I might have gotten a little carried away; my wife and newborn son were spending a lot of time resting, so I was just hanging out writing about songs all week…something a teacher, soccer coach, dad and label owner typically can’t do. So, this week’s playlist of last week’s hits might be a little longer than usual, but you’re going to be all the better for it. You should immediately stop what you’re doing, take a deep breath, and just spend two minutes of your day fully invested in this new Cindy video. The band are on the verge of dropping 1:2 LP, and like everything coming out of San Francisco in the last year, its jumping to the top of my listening rotation. The buzz of the synthesizer really connects for me somehow; it almost feels like a separate guitar line that’s sort of feeding back behind Karina’s softened delivery. Personally, the band just has this knack for creating these songs that are emotionally moving, yet feel steadied, almost stationary, in their presentation. The fact that this isn’t one of the biggest bands out there right now means we’re all covering the wrong stuff. The LP will be out on October 1st via Mt. St. Mtn., with a vinyl version coming in November.

Let’s start off Monday right, sneaking right in with a great track from the latest Flowertown LP. The rest of our playlist is pretty solid too, as there were some jams last week. I’ll admit I kind of feel like too many people are sleeping on Cindy still, so be sure to check out their latest single in this weeks hits. Plus, it’s great to hear our friends Letting Up Despite Great Faults drop right back in where they left off years ago. Ease into Monday with a playlist of jams we were digging last week…and have a decent day.

Cindy Share Lost Dog Single

Dammit! Why are you not listening to Cindy all day every day! The San Francisco band shared another single from their forthcoming 1:2 LP, and I’ll be darned if I’m not going to play this during my students’ free write time today. It’s this drifting piece of no-pop, almost as if it’s a song that’s just happy to merely exist in the world. The recording is so intimate, all the way to the crackling of the speakers and the little nuanced electronic notes toying with your ears in the distance. Every time I press play I’m just transfixed, rooted to this sort of other-worldly blank space where there’s nothing but me and this tune, drifting away into the unknown. Whatever. This better be on your year end list or you’re a fake. Look for 1:2 via Tough Love/Mt. St. Mtn. on September 1st.
