New Jams from the Austin Scene

Feel like I neglected Austin last week, so wanted to make up for it by sharing a couple of the tunes that’ve been chilling for the last two weeks; we’ve got new tunes from Queen Serene and Gentleman Rogues.

Queen Serene began as Sarah Ronan’s new bedroom project, but as you can tell by the darkened post-punk sounds here, things have been fleshed out into a full on rock n’ roll hotbed. Love the way this tune goes back and forth between sort of slinky early 80s sounds and a driving guitar exploration that recalls acts like Television.

Gentleman Rogues have just teamed up with Snappy Little Numbers, and dammit if they didn’t go and try to one-up their label by creating the snappiest little pop rock tune. The track hits with a heavy mix that puts the guitars right up front. Perfect for all you pop rock fans, the new 7″ drops on April 1st.

Show Pics: Corners @ Hi-Dive (2/18)

CornersWhen I have to travel for the day job (international super-conglomerate type thing), I try to find shows going on to get out in the foreign scene and see some bands in a way I might not have a chance to otherwise; like seeing Temples and Warpaint in 300 person venues and catching Merchandise in Richmond after missing their show in Austin. Last time I was in Denver, it was a dead week, but not so this time around and since I had seen Hi-Dive show up on the tour stops for several of my favorite bands so Corners at Hi-Dive on a Wednesday night it was.

Usually, I am guarded about my enthusiasm for Wednesday night local openers, but Best Creeps and Hair Cult were both outstanding. Click for a few words and plenty of pics…

Sorry I Missed This: Corners

kornerAgain, the end of the year brings to your attention a lot of great hits, and I was lucky to catch this on the ever changing line-up that is Burger Records.  Corners are this sort of synth-glam-post-punk phenomenon coming out of that LA place, and what they’re creating is really something.  There’s a bit of hipness to it, but there’s also this vibe that they could really give a fuck…making for a great listen.  Their LP Maxed Out on Distractions is out now courtesy of the above mentioned folks, as well as Lolipop Records. The jam below is the one I keep gravitating towards the mostest.
