Weird Numbers Share Summer Legs

When I last covered the forthcoming Weird Numbers LP, the band were offering up this sort of jagged back-and-forth stomp in the vein of post-punk. This go round, the rhythm section and the opening guitar lines brought in something more energetic, pushing the speed and hooks right through your speakers. I’d press play on this for the guitar sounds alone; angular and gritty, always rushing forward. Still, the vocals keep the song’s calm in the midst of the storm, steadying the ship so to speak. Energetic and cool, Weird Numbers is sounding like a ripping good time; it drops Friday via Dandy Boy Records!

Weird Numbers Announce S/T LP + Share Soda

For some reason, there’s something in the beat of this new Weird Numbers song that makes me feel like stalking about in my classroom right now (don’t worry…no students are present). There’s something dark and dangerous about it, until those buzzsaw guitars start to rip their way through the rhythm of it all. It’s like the song’s tossing and turning you like a dingy at sea amidst a storm, with the vocals serving as the rope that tethers you to the dock. All of it just feels dark and dangerous at once, with hints of hooks bubbling carefully beneath the current. The band release their new self-titled LP on March 3rd via Dandy Boy Records.

Nothing Natural Announce NN EP

Well, seeing as I’m just getting through all my emails today, may as well stop with another track from the Bay Area…Nothing Natural. You might already be familiar with the band’s members, with us having covered their other projects like Parallel and Aluminum. This act, however, are hitting on these classic 90s guitar vibes, slowly letting the guitar notes light up in the track’s background while the vocals have this heavy indifference; it’s that perfect college rock vibe, best if listened to really loudly through your speakers as the echoing distortion let’s you know this more than just a slacker rock affair. Listen loud as the group hit that perfect balance between ballad and grungy riff work; NN EP will be out via Dandy Boy Records on March 3rd.

Aluminum Share Red & Gold Single

In just about a week, Dandy Boy Records will release Aluminum‘s Windowpane EP, but before that hits, there’s another single you definitely want to get running through your mind. Whereas the core of “Windowpane” was a little bit pop oriented, with a heavy rock center, “Red & Gold” holds nothing back, tearing through your speakers as soon as you press play. You’re greeted with a wall of rushing noise, pushing the song’s into your face as riffs rip though. But, while the pace doesn’t slow, Marc and Ryann enter the fray, trading vocal lines to bring in this melodic balance that gives your ears a momentary respite. In between those sweet moments you get huge riffs shattering your ear drums; it’s like a noise rock Oreo cookie, so take a bite and enjoy the sugary melodic center! Windowpane EP is out on 12″ next Friday, October 7th.

Aluminum Share Windowpanes Video

A few weeks ago we were catching up with our friends over at Dandy Boy Records; they had just recently announced a killer 12″ EP from Aluminum…and now we’ve got a video for that accompany single, just as a reminder of what should be on your radar. The more I listen to this tune, the more I’m drawn to the propulsive nature of verses; it’s matched up right up with the way the video was shot, meant “to capture the wide-eyed feelings of youth.” It’s the perfect set up for the acidic wash of noise that bursts in through the almost-chorus, blurring the lines between our expectations and how far the group are willing to take their sound. The Windowpane EP is out on October 7th, so don’t forget to grab it right now!

Rad New from Dandy Boy Records

One of our favorite labels, Dandy Boy Records, has a bunch of great stuff going on, so we wanted to be sure that you knew about all the greatness, otherwise, what’s the point?

For starters, there’s this rad video from the latest Sob Stories LP, Fair Shakes, which came out in the Spring. You’ll love the great stop-amination work of Elyse Schrock, but then you’ll keep coming back time and time again for the huge hooks in the chorus!

Then you get a couple of new tunes from the 1981, and add in some previous jams to make up the bands newest Polaroids EP (available on cassette). I was already loved with the amazing “Nelson’s Camera,” but the two new songs have the band working in some new territory that definitely has my ears on where the band will go next.

Finally, the label has announced a joint venture with Discontinuous Invention to release a new EP from Aluminum. We’ve got the brand new single here, and it certainly makes the allusion towards the band’s affection for early Creation Records, particularly where the song erupts into this beautiful noise in spite of the melodious nature of the vocals; let this song give your ears the best sort of mindfuck ever! The Windowpane EP is out on October 7th.

Dandy Boy Records Drops Welcome to Oakland Comp

I’ll be honest…there’s not a spot in the country that’s dropping better tunes than the Oakland/San Francisco scene; we’ve covered tons of those projects here on our end of things, so you know we’re continuously enamored. But, let’s say you just stumbled upon our site for the first time…and you’re looking for something new? Well, Welcome to Oakland! This compilation was put together by Dandy Boy Records, highlighting the incredible underground scene going on in the Bay Area right now. You get hits from ATH mainstays like RE Seraphin or Blue Ocean, plus a delicious Yea Ming and the Rumours reminder, not to mention a hot James Wavey tune! Just click below and let it hit you, or bounce to the site and pick your favorite jam.

R.E. Seraphin Shares Big Break

While I’m sure we’d all welcome a second EP just like R.E. Seraphin‘s last one, A Room Forever, it seems that he’s pushing himself to get beyond the sound of his peers, even going so far as to look to include “Journey-style solos” in his new effort. For me, despite pushing to break loose from the confines of lo-fi, Mr. Seraphin doesn’t lose any of the subtleties that guarantee the joy of listening to his work. On this new single, you get the textured layering of guitar sounds, with some staking claim to that aforementioned bravado, while the other drives the tune’s rhythm forward. His vocals get some backing throughout too, adding another careful layer of harmony and charm to the mix; it’s clear he’s really maximizing his talents. His new Swingshift EP is out Friday via Mt. St. Mtn./Dandy Boy/Tear Jerk/Safe Suburban Home.

Sob Stories Share I’m the One You Want Video

Sob Stories first came on our radar in 2017 when they released their debut EP with the good folks at Emotional Response. Now, Joel Cusumano and company have moved over to another ATH fave, Dandy Boy Records, dropping Fair Shakes this week. It’s 12 tracks that mix jangles, punk and power pop into a fun filled adventure with hooks for days. Below we’ve got a brand new video shot by Stephen Patterson, taking footage from the San Francisco area to match up with stand out “I’m the One You Want.” I’m a huge sucker for this chorus though, dropping in and delivering this banging pop moment that I keep coming back to, again and again. Crank it up, bop along…then go grab the record like a good music fan would!

Yea-Ming and the Rumours Share By the Sea Video

I’m not sure where you are in the world, but you’d be best served to settle down and enjoy So, Bird, the new LP from Yea-Ming and the Rumours. Today, I’m excited to share one a new video for one of the album’s standout tunes, “By the Sea.” It’s a wistfully penned track, with Yea-Ming Chen’s vocal performance engraining itself in your mind; there’s something about it that just feels other-worldly, stuck in some purgatory between 60s chanteuse and modern dream pop. Of course, the musical elements only highlight the vocals, careful not to get in the way, with careful strums and meandering notes hanging in the distance, lifting Chen’s voice to intoxicating levels; I, admittedly, can’t get this song or its performance out of my head today. If you’re enjoying, and why wouldn’t you, you can grab So, Bird from Dandy Boy Records!
