Last Week’s Jams, Today (2.14 – 2.18)

What were the hot jams from last week? Well. We have them. We put them on a nice little playlist (you can complain about it later) so you could enjoy revisiting the hits. We’ve been running spotlights on SXSW artists, so you’ve got tunes from Logan Lynn, Grant Pavol and Elephant Stone, hoping it’ll catch your eye and get you to check out the interviews. Our friends in Good Looks dropped a new tune, plus we’ve got absolute rippers from Bodega and Dehd, plus some cool shit under the radar from Star Party, Salt Lake Alley, Red Pants and Howless.

Dehd Announce Blue Skies

As of late, I generally try to stay away from the cool kids table when it comes to repeating their posts, but there’s just something Dehd that grabs me each time. Part of it has to be that I continue to marvel at how such a minimal band set up creates such a huge sound. On this new single from the forthcoming Blue Skies, its entirely down to Emily Kempf’s vocal performance, from her pseudo-stutter to her dramatic howl, all of it reeks of breaking into pop rock territory, albeit with that perfect bit of attitude. Looking forward to see where this new record is headed, but if this is our first taste, the LP should be pretty promising. It hits on May 27th via Fat Possum.

 

Show Preview: Julien Baker w/ Dehd @ Stubb’s 10/27

The shows start coming and they don’t stop coming! Tomorrow night, we’ve got a great lineup once again gracing the stage at Stubb’s, and one that will make you come out early. Headlining the evening, we have Julien Baker, who dropped a lovely album earlier this year called Little Oblivions. Her masterful songwriting, heavily emotive lyrics, and vocals that can cut you deep should make for a wonderful evening in the gravel at Stubb’s. But before you start crying at the club, make sure to get there early for openers, Dehd, who I’m stoked for. This Chicago trio dropped one of my favorite albums of 2020 in Flower of Devotion, which is a no-skips-post-punk ripper. Take a listen to some tunes below and then scoop some tickets while you can!

 

Dehd Announce Flower of Devotion

I feel like Water was one of those albums that was vastly overlooked by folks, but I keep coming back to various songs and the record as a whole; I love longevity in a record, so take that for what its worth. Today, Dehd announce their brand new album, Flower of Devotion, and do so with a short film that accompanies the lead single, “Loner”. The band wanted to maintain their minimalist approach to song craft, though they admit to smoothing out some of their rougher edges in the new songs. Still, Jason Balla’s guitar lines still have that dreamy angular fascination with the world, whilst Emily Kempf’s distinctive voice dominates the performance on this tune…her range seems to know no bounds. I for one am all on board with those poppier edges! The new LP will be out on Fire Talk on July 17th!

Accessory Shares Eyes for Berlin

Accessory is the solo project of Jason Balla, who typically is found playing in Dehd, but they’re working on their sophomore LP, so Jason opted to go and record some work on his own. This tune’s got a heavy feel, primarily through the tones of Jason’s voice. That said, the thematic element of finding that “the world can be beautiful and good” shines right through the track; you can even hear it ever so slightly in Balla’s voice as the song begins to progress. No word on whether the project has long term goals, but as a fan of Dehd, and the band’s label Fire Talk, felt like it was my duty to share this with you!

Everyone! Meet Chris from Young Scum.

2019 for me was one of those years where when its all said and done you wonder what did I really do or achieve this year? So much happened its hard to process it all at the end of December. Kind of like… making an end-of-year list and trying to remember everything you liked and listened to! It was an amazing year for music and my list was way bigger than this but I narrowed it down to my top 15 songs.

Dehd Share New Single, Letter

Dehd have been high upon my list of great acts to hit the ground running in 2019; their Water LP (Fire Talk) garnered lots of raves. And, just when you think you know a band, they go and grow into something bigger and more badass; you can still here the slight surfy jangle hanging out here, but it’s spun entire differently. This track, and the accompanying video, belongs to Emily Kempf and her performance. She takes her vocals to the next level, skirting around the edges of traditional pop superstars by adding just the faintest gruff texture to her deliver. I’ll take new songs from this band any day.

Deeper Announce New 7″

Deeper dropped their stunning self-titled LP last year via Fire Talk, and we did a lot of coverage on that album; I even booked them at my super-last-minute SXSW show, where they killed it. Now, the band are back with the announcement of a new 7″, featuring a John Maus cover and this new track below. I love the immediacy of the rhythm section here, offering up an energetic bob of right from the get-go. They don’t stray too far either, bringing in some discordant angular guitar riffs to craft the contrast where they vocals can weave in and out. This tune’s super rad, and they’ll have the 7″ on hand when they hit the road with label mates Dehd this Fall.

It’s just one of those nights where you could practically walk downtown, fall over and land at a really incredible show.
