Last Week’s Jams (11.3 – 11.7)

While the previous week seemed like the music biz was doing their typical song and dance, closing down releasees to focus on the lists and what nots. But, this week picked up, at least on my end, as we covered tons of new releases and new singles. There were a couple of out-of-the-blue announcements that I was grateful to enjoy, like brand new Just Joans and Kiwi Jr, both of whom just dropped some straight bangers into my mix. I really loved the new Pansy single, as its one of the more special tunes in the mix this week…and that Hirons single had its own way of captivating too. Along with all that, it was good to see Natalie Jane Hill back in the fold, as well as Emma Russack. Little bit of everything for you, so dig on.

Dorothy Share I Want to Be Out on the Sea

Those of you looking for something quieter for your soul will want to lean into this Dorothy single; it’s a track that reflects the song’s title, nipping at your soul like the splashing waters of the sea tides. The UK group build these cavernous musicscapes, allowing their vocals to line the edges of the ebbs and flows of each note. They overlap vocals, creating another layer of sound that finds listeners carefully listening in for the secrets of the craft. It’s a track that washes over your soul, cleansing the palate so you can immerse yourself wholly in the craft; look for Sea Songs this Friday via Angel Tapes.

Infectiously Dreamy Pop From Her’s

Her'sOh man, this track is a real winner– possibly my favorite track of the week! Her’sis a duo out of Liverpool that are making jangle pop worthy of your eager ears. This song, “Dorothy,” is really special– there are these edgy guitars that cut through the song over and over again, making for catchy riffs that give it a healthy bounce. Meanwhile the vocals are drenched in a Morrissey-Like quality of emotion and swagger that perfectly matches those ceaseless guitar hooks. To top it all off, there are great juxtaposing oohs that balance everything out and the track ends after a sweet build up. Make sure you take a listen to this song and let it take over your day.

Yes! More Kevin Morby!

unnamed-32If you haven’t taken the time to familiarize yourself with Kevin Morby yet, it’s really time for you to sit on down and take a listen, as his entrancing brand of rock will have you swooning. The latest track/video he has released is “Dorothy,” which you can take in below, and it’s a blazing dose of americana influenced rock and roll. What I’m most fond of on this number is the way the unique vocals of Morby are both mirrored and complimented by the instrumentation. You get the fuzzy guitars that blend with his voice, and then that ragtime piano that comes and goes through the mix, juxtaposing with the buzzing main focus of the song. Take a listen and watch the video below, and buckle up forSinging Saw, which is out on April 15th viaDead Oceans.
