Austin Spotlight: Keep an Eye on Slow

slowerA few weeks ago I was hanging out at Hotel Vegas to catch Literature (shame you guys weren’t there); I knew most of the bands on the bill, but I hadn’t heard Slow yet.  I was really impressed, particularly with the guitar playing, which was noisy just like it…and you can hear a nice little solo in the middle of this tune.  I feel like it’s our job to keep an eye out on rad bands coming out, and I feel like it’s been kind of humdrum lately.  So, you should definitely keep an eye on this band; they’ll be playing the Fleshlights album release show over at Vegas on November 4th, but be warned, it’ll be loud.  Oh, and this tune is a demo, so don’t get all audiophile on me!

Bored Nothing is Back Too

boardJust last week I was talking about Bitch Prefect, who were in the latest Aussie musical explosion (not that that ever stopped), but in that post I talked about Bored Nothing, who were one of my favorite acts of that grouping.  Somehow, I missed that the band had a new album, Some Songs, ready for release, along with this single that’s below.  While the production is a touch different, it’s still clear that the project holds onto the stylistic touches that gave listeners an intimate experience with the songwriting.  Now that I’m on this tune, I just picked up the LP from Spunk Records, so I can indulge just a bit more.

I’m Enjoying a Daydream Waltz

ddwaltsYou come to expect a certain sound from your favorite labels, so I was taken aback when I grabbed this new single from A Daydream Waltz.  It’s one of the latest singles to be released by Art is Hard Records, so you knew I’d be on board, but for an entirely different reason.  I like the melancholic tone of the guitar; it has a bit of a billowing sound as well, which goes even further as the tune progresses.  It’s this perfect bit of pensive pop music, and it’s my jam today.  You can also go and grab the band’s According to Whom EP for the NYP over at their Bandcamp.

Sleater-Kinney Are Back, Y’all

sleaterWhile the Internet has been all a twitter over the box set reissue that has been put on sale from Sub Pop, Sleater-Kinney, of late 90’s girl group fame, have announced that they are back with a new single and a new record, No Cities To Love. The group broke up back in 2006, but they’ve decided to give the gritty emo badass rock another go. You probably know one member, Carrie Brownstein, from her role as producer/star/all-around-funny-lady in Portlandia, or even her work in her other band, Wild Flag that also featured Janet Weiss from the S-K lineup.  Have a listen to the new track and follow along with the words here, and get ready for the new album to be released January 20th of next year. You can also download the track for free with an email address on the band’s website.

Jittery Pop from Boyracer

photo02There’s a bit of a staggering stutter that comes to the guitar work in the opening moments of this new single from Boyracer.  It should come as no surprise as the band’s been releasing catchy pop tunes for their 20+ career…landing on labels like Slumberland and Sarah Records.  Sadly, the word on the street is that this might be their final EP, which will come out on Emotional Response, the label run by the band’s Stewart Anderson.  The label is about to release a slew of new singles from the likes of Hulaboy and Safe Distance, but I figured this one is a must for your radar.

Fun Rocker from Native America

grownupThere’s really no typifying the sound of this new Native America single.  There’s definitely a more raucous element than your typical fare, but that breakdown in the end puts the band’s feet in traditional indie rock land. Personally, I’m preferring the grittier elements to the tune, but it also demonstrates how the band’s sound can branch out in varying directions.  That should make the release of their new album, Grown Up Wrong, quite a satisfying listen.  It’ll be available on November 18th via Inflated Records; you’ll enjoy it or else!

Rock This New Tune from Bully

bullyYou like Cloud Nothings? You like lady singers? Then you’re going to have to get on it real quick and jam to this tune from Bully.  It’s the project of Alicai Bognanno, and she’s done much of the work on her eponymous EP by herself.  The guitars have that same angular ringing, pushed forth by the pacing of the drum work; there’s even quick moves in guitar discord that come in and out of varying parts on the track.  Just turn the stereo up a little bit louder, sit back and let this slick track knock you back. Look for her EP on October 21st.

Warbling Folk Pop from Lisa Mitchell

lisa-mitchellThere’s been a lot of buzz overseas about Lisa Mitchell, but I hadn’t really given her work too much attention until I came across this playful bit of pop songwriting.  The opening moments of the track recall the early days of Kings of Convenience, with a slight hint of buzz coming from the recorded guitar before Mitchell’s marvelous voice makes its entrance. There’s a quality to her voice that would put her on par with many American contemporaries, though her straight-forward approach makes for music that’s far more enchanting.  Give the young lady a listen.

Little Bit of the Gaze Movement from Mentalease

a2035205364_10It’s been a hot minute since I’ve heard from Mentalease, but I’m really glad that they’re here to help us wrap up our week with you folks.  The band has a sound you’ll be familiar with, as it does a great job to encompass the entirety of the current shoegaze ilk; it’s got those buzz saw guitars, warm vocal undertones, and it wraps up in under four minutes.  Those are all nice points, but you really have to give this song a listen to see just how much they deserve your attention.  Look for their new album, Indian Summer, to come out this winter. New Music Premiere: The Orchids “Hey Sometimes!”

orchidsThose of you looking for something perfect, something pop better listen up.  Today you get to hear the first single from legendary indie poppers, The Orchids. The last time I heard from them was their marvelous 2010 LP, The Lost Star, but as they ready the release of Beatitude #9, we bring you this single.  It carries the band’s typical soft underbelly in its harmonies, winning listeners over with guitar parts that seemingly trickle in step with each melody.  There’s a simplicity to the approach, asking followers to let themselves be absorbed in the craftsmanship of the band.  Look to get your hands on the album on October 21st via Acuarela.
