PACKS Share Another Single from Woah EP

When the press release talked of Madeline Link’s approach to this EP, this was exactly what I imagined, having grown super familiar with her voice on PACKS Take the Cake LP. Link’s voice was always a dominating factor, and that gift sustains your listening experience here, though we get a little bit more of an intimate songwriting approach here, so much so that you can hear the buzz of the strings as they’re strummed. Structurally, the song’s seem ready to jump through your speakers, as you can hear the power in the craft, but it succeeds in its quietness. Perhaps down the road they get a revisit, but the natural charm of Link’s songwriting supersedes anything else at the moment. Woah EP is out July 8th via Fire Talk.

Wombo Drop Snakey Single

Wombo were one of the highlights, for me, of SXSW; I love the band’s sound, somewhere in the realm of post-punk, and I can assume folks will likely make Dry Cleaning nods too (that might be a theme today!). This song operates atop heavy bass lines and short percussive notes; it’s not until the 48 second mark that the song begins to stretch it out a bit. When they do, angular riffs began to cut into that rhythmic backbone, sharpening the sound, with little distortion guitar blips sounding like warning alarms. Their album Fairy Rust will be out via Fire Talk on July 29th, and they hit the road throughout late July/early August…including an Austin date at the Mohawk.

Cusp Share I Know Single via Open Tab

Fire Talk have been crushing it with their Open Tab project, dropping in a single here and there from new(ish) acts, with a little profile piece to go along with each release. This latest tune from Cusp is a tasty little morsel that I had to share with you immediately. What got me excited was the way the band are balancing their work, sonically speaking. Jen Bender’s vocals are great, hitting on the modern sort of pop rock tones we adore, but the guitar work behind has a heavier hand; it has a tendency to bring in these melodic crashing waves, churning the song into a mixture of noise and pop sensibility. The perfect execution has me swooning, and hopefully you as well!

Mamalarky Share You Know I Know Video

Mamalarky have been on a journey since their earliest days in Austin, moving about the country in hopes of finding the right fit for their sound; they’ve now settled in Georgia for the time being, ready to work on the follow-up to their debut. This tune alludes to their time in Austin, with Livvy commenting on how Austin “gave us the proper nutrients to do what we’re doing now.” And, we couldn’t be prouder. I love the way the guitar unleashes here, echoing through your speakers, with the production giving it just enough muddiness to balance out with the group’s natural pop hooks. Hopefully we get more from the band now that they’re settled in their new home.

Cola Drop Fulton Park Video

I’ve really enjoyed spending some time with the new Cola album, which will be out at the end of this Week. Today, the band dropped the video for “Fulton Park,” which is one of the tunes I kept going back to as I listened to the LP. There’s this clever little plodding bounce to it; it’s kind of like a happy circle pit, but it’s broken up by this sort of sputtering noise with Tim Darcy’s voice draped over the downward spiral. Something about this tune just felt more imaginative, more thoughtful in its purposeful unfolding than I think we got before, illustrating that Cola definitely have some tricks up their sleeve. Erasers Release A Breeze + Video

Perth’s Erasers have been captivating me with the work from their new album Constant Connection; today they’ve got a brand new single to share with you, furthering my infatuation. I love how the backbone of this tune seems to revolve around this fuzzy synth pulse buried in the mix; it rises sometimes as other instruments pull out, and other times it just seems to darken the edges of the notes. Rebecca Orchard’s vocal work in the song is heavy and purposeful, almost like some sort of mantra on repeat creating a musical texture almost as much as it’s providing lyrical insight. Ultimately, their work is about patience, immersing yourself in the magical present they’ve created for you. So go ahead, take a moment and just focus on this jam; Constant Connection is out via Fire Talk/Night School on April 22nd.

Wombo Drop Below the House Single + Video

When I listen to Wombo, I kind of get reminded of the early days of Deerhoof; it was exciting watching a band shift and change from chorus to verse to wherever they chose to go, and that’s what the Louisville trio call to my mind. This tune has this playful little vocal delivery, almost teasing you with pop sweetness and melody, but its rolling over a heavy drum bit that erupts with the guitars and elemental noise. Is it heavy? Can this be a pop song? I love that they’re just switching it up and playing with the formula by bringing their own vision. The song comes at you courtesy of Fire Talk.

Wombo Drop New Single

On the heels of their Keesh Mountain EP, Wombo return with a brand new single…and a tour announcement. I love that the band describes this tune as “the balance between chaos and structure;” it definitely fits with my listening habits. The guitars throughout the song do have that dangerous edge, particularly when the song opens up. But, it’s Sydney Chadwick’s voice that drives the song, letting the guitars and drums work around to create the balancing act while she steadies the ship. Just a really solid tune with these slow burning riffs and smoky vibes that easily sedate you as you kick back and immerse yourself in their latest jam. They’ll be kicking off a nice tour in March of next year that starts at SXSW, then sort of bounces around the middle of the States, so keep an eye out.

Mamalarky Drop Two New Singles

Since their days living in Austin, we have long supported and tried to move the hype train forward on our friends in Mamalarky. The band has since moved to Atlanta after a stop in L.A. but we still love them and love their groundbreaking music. Moving into 2021, the band has a full length LP ready to release soon, but first dropped to brand new singles today, both with accompanying music videos self-made. If videos aren’t your thing, the fin folks at Fire Talk have both tunes available for purchase/download.

Bnny Share Sure Video

Seems like my listening approach today is the dizzying spell of slow-core pop, and I don’t mind that one bit. After that great Cindy tune this morning, we’ve now got this striking new tune form Bnny. Jess Viscius dominates the tune, wielding her voice like a steady stream of fog creeping into your listening room. Everything behind her voice sounds so forlorn and lonesome, like we’re lost out on the road, driving to nowhere. But, the video seems to illustrate some themes of finding companionship, so through the fog and wandering, there’s promise here, or at least the possibility of it. Another chance to immerse yourself in Bnny before Everything drops via Fire Talk on August 20th.
