One More From Deeper

At this point we’ve said just about all we can say about Chicago quartet Deeper and their upcoming album Auto-Pain. A quick search will show you we’ve been covering the band since their very first single release back in 2016, and we continue to share their music as much as we can. Basically, we’re huge fans and we feel like you should also take some time to get into this band. That said, Deeper are sharing one final single called “The Knife” off their new album prior to Friday’s release date. It is yet another reason to get into this band.

Auto-Pain is out this Friday, March 27th and pre-orders are up now on Fire Talk.

Deeper Announce New 7″

Deeper dropped their stunning self-titled LP last year via Fire Talk, and we did a lot of coverage on that album; I even booked them at my super-last-minute SXSW show, where they killed it. Now, the band are back with the announcement of a new 7″, featuring a John Maus cover and this new track below. I love the immediacy of the rhythm section here, offering up an energetic bob of right from the get-go. They don’t stray too far either, bringing in some discordant angular guitar riffs to craft the contrast where they vocals can weave in and out. This tune’s super rad, and they’ll have the 7″ on hand when they hit the road with label mates Dehd this Fall.

Erasers Announce Pulse Point

Usually when I write about acts from Australia, they’re almost always from Melbourne or surrounding areas; it’s rare to find ourselves in Perth, but here we are with Erasers. The duo have just a announced their sophomore LP, leading with this entrancing new single. This number is a special one, illustrating the duo’s care in their song craft; the tune has this darkened electronic pulse that barely moves, steadying the entire song around its core. From time to time, added electronic notes give the song a slight rise, as do the carefully placed guitar lines that sort of hang in the air. And, when Rebecca’s voice comes in, it’s almost like a calming wash atop it all, layered as an instrument almost. Pulse Points is out on July 12th via Fire Talk/Pouring Dream.

One More Halfsour Tune

In case you weren’t anticipating the new Halfsour LP enough, I wanted to reaffirm that next weeks Sticky release will be well-worth your hard-earned dollars. I think the meat of this song is top of the line, Grade A rock n’ roll. It opens with this bobbing bass line and this knife-work guitar, letting Zoe tease you into the track. Once they hit that 1.10 minute mark, the song drops into some of the best guitar pop I’ve heard this week, with Zoe’s voice soaring through your stereo (or probs your laptop). it’s like a fucking tractor beam of rad pop music that you just won’t let you pull away. Sticky drops next Friday via Fire Talk and Disposable America.

Halfsour Announce New Album

I’ll be honest, Halfsour didn’t cross my radar until Jigsaw Records sent me Tuesday Night Live back in 2016, but I’ve been a huge huge fan since then, so it’s great that they’ve announced a new LP! I think the mix on this song is absolutely perfect; you get these huge heavy riffs and crashing cymbals, but they’re not imposing. It’s more like they’re clearing space, giving ample room for Zoe Wyner’s voice real-life commentary to strike listeners down. I love the chorus from all parts, from the scuzzy guitars to the pitch changes in Wyner’s voice, it all absolutely works to the max. Sticky will be out on May 24th via two of my favorite labels, Fire Talk and Disposable America. Please, if you’re not listening to this band, you’re not living right.

Dehd Announce New Album

While the late 00s garage/surf re-hash got tired after a few years, it’s still one of my favorite sounds, particularly when it’s presented in a refreshing manner, like Chicago’s Dehd are doing. You can hear that sound immediately, matched by steadying percussion; it’s catchy too, but it’s the chorus that comes in right at the thirty second mark that really drew me into the song. It takes the track into an almost soulful ballad, though it always holds onto the band’s sense of exuberance with the “sha la la la” that crash at the end of the chorus. Catchy and nostalgic, this track makes the forthcoming Water LP very promising; it drops on May 10th via Fire Talk.

Rad Tune from Dehd

Chicago act Dehd have a pretty solid pedigree, but we needn’t focus on that when they’ve got this stunning new track to enjoy. The track really has this sound that seeps into your soul, and I get that that sounds strange, but those guitar chords seem to weave their way into your skin as the vocals take on a heavy solemnity. All the while you feel as if the track is rolling, churning you over and over like a wave crashing upon the shore. Man, this is a serious jam for serious people. Rock it out and have a happy Friday.

Corey Flood Drop Video

Earlier this year, Corey Flood dropped the Wish You Hadn’t EP, and now they’ve dropped a video for the lead track on said EP. From the get-go, there’s an ominous tone set by the rhythm section, accented by the way the vocals are delivered in a deep half-whisper. Guitar tones shine a little light on the track, just enough to give a hint at pop sensibility. The accompany video has a sort of gray wash to it, splicing images of the group with everyday footage shots. It’s a slow news day, and this song rules, so enjoy. Grab the EP via Fire Talk.

Angular Pop from Deeper

I’ve spent the great part of the last few years trying to convince everyone I know how great Omni is…looks like I can now add another like-minded act to that list with this new Deeper tune. It’s got angular chords seemingly working against the rhythm section at all times; the vocals are delivered in an almost spoken-word manner, meant to match syllables and beats. What’s really enthralling about this tune is how it seems to bounce between styles, dreamy at times, art rock at others…then closing with a little explorative indie rock. This tune appears on the band’s self-titled debut, which is being released via Fire Talk on May 25th.

New Post-Punk Jam from Media Jeweler

I’m not entirely sure where the grand prospect of 1-800-SUCCEED will end up as a whole, but the first single from Media Jeweler‘s new LP is pretty stellar. A ringing guitar seemingly sets you off, albeit for a momentary second before angular guitars cut in and a rolling rhythm section provides the central groove. Every musical note seems to be fighting against the other, like a group of children clamoring for the listener’s attention. There’s room for energy within the confines of this track, and they open up ever-so-slightly near the song’s end, only to deliver one last blast of lyrical content before wrapping up. They’ve got my attention for sure, and the new LP is slated for a release on March 30th via Fire Talk.
