Seasoning Share Friends Video

Admittedly, this tune’s been sitting in my email for a few weeks now, having dropped back in January, and the more emails I get, the more it falls down there. But, today’s the day I get to bring you the latest single from Seasoning! Stylistically, this fits into the modern realm of classic guitar pop, pulling from the likes of bands like Real Estate or Snowy, something with just a nice little hint of jangles to it. The vocals have that feel like its washing warmly across you, calming everything in the vicinity. Plus, the lyrical content is hyper relatable as we’ve holed back up this year again, and I miss my friends. Look for The Condensation EP later this year!

Get Weird with Alien Tango

I find myself inexplicably addicted to Alien Tango. There’s definitely an oddball sense of humor, in both the song’s construction and the video work we present you below. But, peel back some of the oddity and you’ll hear some really exciting things going on in the work of Alberto Garcia Roca. The beat here has this forceful video game punch to it, bordering on glitchy; these electronic sounds get layered upon one another, yanked back from time to time to reveal these marvelously intoxicating melodies. It honestly reminds me of when I fist fell into Animal Collective and found them super-exciting; I get those same vibes, do you?

Premiere: Bedroom-Beach Pop From Mr. Husband

Mr. Husband, out of Baltimore, is the project of Kenny Tompkins, who comes cut from the same cloth as other prolific pop weirdos such as Ariel Pink and R. Stevie Moore. Since his debut release Plaid on Plaid on Yellow K Records, back in 2016, he’s moved his way through various genres, but always centered around the intimacy of bedroom pop. This new track, “Friends,” which ATH is proud to premiere today, is no exception to the great songwriting of Mr. Husband. Springy guitar riffs jangle in the mix before Tompkins’ vocals join in, which are soon complimented by Beach Boys-esque “oohs” that finish off the blend of instrumentation in a golden light. Despite the sunny sound, as you’ll hear in the song, our narrator is coming to terms with cutting out an unwanted presence in their life, and talks about lending out a favorite record only to know he’ll never get it back. Regardless of the poor decisions of the song’s narrator, “Friends,” is a lo-fi pop gem with a catchy chorus and quaint elements that will delight any listener.

“Friends” is taken from Mr. Husband’s upcoming release, …& The Husky Section, which will be released on May 3rd via Yellow K Records and Good Soil Records, both digitally and as a limited run of cassettes. Preorder it here.

Brand New Deep Cuts Single + Sade Cover

Houston’s Deep Cuts have been on our radar for some time, as they’re always putting out important pop music in the Lone Star State (or so says I). They just passed this brand new single our way, a song highlighting the sentiment of being surrounded by pseudo-friends and deciding whether to sit back and enjoy it, or just go on and get high. Even with the dark sentiment, you can’t escape the band’s uplifting pop vibes coming your way.

And speaking of pop music, the band put an incredible spin on Sade‘s “Hang On to Your Love,” taking the natural groove and dripping it with textured synth and a more impactful beat. The band has a slew of Texas dates, and then they hit up Brooklyn for an AdHoc sponsored show on July 7th. Rest easy “Friends,” pop music will save you.

Perfect Bedroom Pop from Boreen

When one aims to define a genre, you can often send mixed singles. On this latest Boreen track, I feel as if bedroom pop can be applied in multiple direction; it could have been recorded in your bedroom, but it’s also delightful if you’re laying in bed looking at the single…in your bedroom. Opening with a vocal sample, the song soon blasts off with tight drums and a great harmony that’s sullenly playful. This song has the power to cure your ills, leaving you dreaming of better days. As of now, it’s just a tease for Friends, the album coming March 10th via Good Cheer Records.

Freshcard Misses Her Friends

freshcardI think all of us can relate to the sentiment within the new Freshcard track; it’s a feeling for longing to be with your friends. The German songwriter has a bit of an accent (at least to my Americanized ears), but that makes her delivery on this number all the more appealing, providing it with an added layer of longing. Seems like she just wants a little sign from her friends that they love and miss her too, “that’s all.” I don’t think it’s too much to ask, especially if she keeps writing such endearing tracks. Look for her new album Sunday Night on September 30th via WIAIWYA.

Good and Bad News from The Bankees

bankyIf you’ve been reading our site over the years, one of the group’s we’ve always praised has been The Bankees. I’ve enjoyed their work since the beginning, and they reached out to us yesterday to share a little bit of news with us, both good and bad. The good news is that they’ll be offering a brand new record, Friends, to all their fans. The first single is really great, it seems to encompass the history of the band’s sound all in one great pop song. But, as Simon indicates in his email, this is the final release from the band as they all are parting ways to work on various new adventures. Sad news for me, but I implore you to go visit the bands music, old and new.
