Fun x 3 Fest Preview: Sharon Van Etten

This is a troubling preview…do I swoon over the gorgeous Sharon Van Etten because of her music of her looks?  Can I do both?  I think I’ll do both.  It’s not enough that Sharon can play, and play incredibly well, but I can attest to her mesmerizing performances.  When I last caught her, her voice just took ahold of me, and refused to let go.  It’s not what one would describe as a “pretty” voice, which makes me appreciate what she’s doing all the more; she’s belting out her soul, not just trying to be adored.  Her recent album, Tramp, won over a lot of new fans, atop of accolades from many.  It’s moody and affecting, two things that translate to a good live performance by any artist, especially one the boys can swoon over.  Seeing Sharon on the stage is going to be one of my highlights of Fun Fun Fun Fest, but now that I think about it, it’s more for her incredible set of songs than the looks. But hey, those don’t hurt.

Fun Fest Interviews: Daughn Gibson

It’s Fun Fest time right about now if you weren’t aware, and ATH is kicking things into full force to get you pumped for the festival.   As usual, part of our pre-coverage will be a few interviews of artists that we’re excited to see over the weekend.  Today we’re bringing you our very first one with a feature on up and coming artist Daughn Gibson.  He just put out his surprisingly awesome new album All Hell earlier this year, and we’re really looking forward to seeing him play again.  Follow the jump for questions and answers from Daughn.

Show Preview: Superchunk @ Mohawk (11/1)

Well now this ladies and gentlemen is one hell of a show we’ve got going down in Austin on Thursday night at the Mohawk.  Our headliner for the evening is legendary band Superchunk on the outside stage. That alone should be enough for most of you, but let’s also mention that supporting outside bands are Imperial Teen and Joyce Manor so that should sweeten the deal.  Oh and you’ve also got some awesome up and coming bands playing the inside stage known as Terrible Feelings, Mind Spiders, Wiccans, and The Impalers.  I wish could say that’s all folks, but also remember that the entire show is FREE with your Fun Fest wristband.  Thanks you Mohawk and thank you Transmission.  You rule.

Fun Fest Preview: The Helio Sequence

We’re only a a short week or so away now from the upcoming Fun Fest this weekend and it’s time for us to start really delving into this lineup.  It’s hard for me to pick just one band to focus on so we’ll be bringing you several previews this week with bands we deem worthy of your time.  Today I’d like to turn your attention to veteran indie outfit The Helio Sequence.  Follow the jump for a little info on the band and their set time.

FFF Preview: Cult of Youth

We continue our adoration of Fun Fun Fun Fest, as well as our suggestions, with one of my favorite acts, Cult of Youth.  The Brooklyn group is the primary project of Sean Ragon, but he’s getting by with a lot of help from his friends.  As of now, the group has released two great albums, a self-titled and the recent Love Will Prevail, which I raved about on this here site. For me, it’s really hard to pin down what Sean’s doing, with sounds ranging from punk to folk to hardcore and on.  Ragon’s voice is deep and raspy, which occasionally lends the sound to resemble a bit of a sea-shanty/pirate barroom stomp, but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.  If you’re looking for something special to get into, then this is the place for you to be.

Fun Fest Battles: EITS vs Fucked Up vs Atlas Sound

Fun Fun Fun Fest is right around the corner now and it’s time for all of us to really start taking a hard look at the schedule.  Now the Fun Fest and Transmission crew have done a great job with the lineup and I honestly don’t see too many conflicts throughout all three days.  One big decision I’m seeing weighing heavily on everyone’s mind is Sunday late night with 3 solid bands all playing at the exact same time.  Up in this fight to the death battle we have Explosions in the Sky, Fucked Up, and Atlas Sound.  I guess De la Soul is also at the same time, but I just don’t see them factoring into this decision for me.  So you can get:

A. An incredibly talented local instrumental band that could close out your weekend nicely with an emotional set.

B. In your face rock n roll with a front man that might jump in the crowd and dry hump you.

C. Indie rock at it’s finest with one of our most talented current songwriters.

So what’s it gonna be kids?  Your decision will tell us all a lot about you.

Fun Fun Fun Fest Preview: The Promise Ring

It’s two weeks away from one of our favorite festivals, if not, our favorite Austin festival, so it’s time to take a look at some of the acts we’re really anticipating taking the stage.  For me, the first nostalgic nod has to go to the Promise Ring.  Yeah, I was 17 during their hey-day, so it makes perfect sense that I would have fallen in love with their music, labeled as emo at the time (though with no association to the current range of emo).  Their highlight, in my eyes, definitely has to be Very Emergency.  Whether you want to label it with a genre or not, it was a great pop record, and one that still holds a special place in my heart.  Unfortunately, I never had the chance to catch the group live, as I was living in Oklahoma (the land of no shows) during my peak of adoration, so I’m overly excited to see these guys.  Glad Transmission got them to break out and bring the rock.  Whether you’re nostalgic or just curious, this is a must see band for my two cents.

“Gangs in the Garden” was unlocked to the internet a little bit ago via the BMSR Soundcloud, despite having been uploaded three months ago. Why can’t we have nice things? It is a short, dare I say dancy, vocodered blast.

Reminder, Black Moth Super Rainbow will be at Fun Fun Fun Fest. Cobra Juicy hits 10/23.

Fun Fun Fun Fest Schedule And Single Day

Public service announcement…

The Fun Fun Fun Fest Schedule is out. Previously, we just had the lineup. Now, we can start arguing about which stage at what time and know the general area your drunk friend will be lost in. PIL versus Starfucker seems to be my biggest dilemma. Also, the Yellow stage is now going to feature bands in the evenings including Twin Sister, the always fun Peelander Z and Atlas Sound, finishing up the fest with Black Moth Super Rainbow on Sunday night.

The other news is that the full-price 3-day passes, PIPs and single day tix are available. Go here to buy ’em up.
