What a week of fun tunes! I was really stoked with some of the stuff we were able to premiere on our end, such as new jams from Lola Tried and Giant Day, not to mention that incredible Morwan track all the way from Ukraine. I was happy to hear some new music from Mary Onettes, as they’ve long been one of my go to listens. Plus, there’s never a bad day for Stella Donnelly, dropping us a preview of her new album. Giant Day Offer Golden Times

One should have expected that Giant Day would only continue to evolve and flesh out the sound they established on Glass Narcissus, but when you listen to Golden Times, you’re going to be transported to a timeless classic that seems to exist in a universe all its own. While operating with a droning guitar can be treacherous, the way this tune spins while transmitting visual light images completely took me aback. Is it noise, or has the drone evolved into some sort of beautiful mechanism for modern pop? You can tell by the careful steps of the duo’s vocal work that they’re not shy about intoxicating melodies, foraging for unmined pop gems in the psychedelic caverns of our minds. Be prepared to press repeat as often as possible; this tune will remain part of your life if you grab the group’s new LP, Alarm, out on October 10th via Elephant 6.

My summer vacation is about to wrap up, so I’ve been trying to cram as much rock n’ roll into the site as I can, and I feel like nearing 30 new songs is a pretty solid outing. There was new stuff from ever-present acts like Gregor, Cate Le Bon, Giant Day and more. Plus, there were some brand newish acts popping up on the scene that I think are certainly worth everyone’s time: The Cords and the Cindys, both UK outfits oddly enough. Some ATX love for Stella and the Very Messed and the Wild Kindness both dropping new tunes. Plus, there are several slow burns that will space out the listen, so you’ve got almost two hours of last week’s jams to enjoy!

Giant Day Return with Alarm

I was just cranking out Giant Day‘s last record, Glass Narcissus, this past weekend, and here they are, up and returning in less than a year! This new single illustrates the great range their last release had, and looks forward to another collection that blends their various histories into one unique defying sound. The guitar cuts on this are super-angular, chopping right at you as they come through the speakers; they’re bordering on dancy, but they stay just on the edge of the rock element. Emily’s voice is really heavenly here, kind of rising to high pitches then dropping in the mix, sort of like that one legendary band from Athens (not that one, the other one!). Really stoked to hear Alarm, dropping October 10th via Elephant 6.

For some reason, I felt like last week was kind of a slow-burn, but then when putting all the tracks we mentioned together, was stoked to see we had a solid amount for you to enjoy today. Personally, getting to celebrate new music from Feeling Figures and Being Dead feels like the world gets a win. But, there were also some great LP releases from the likes of Laughing and My Best Unbeaten Brother, amongst others. Totally excited to hear news of another endeavor from Mexico’s Mint Field, not to mention we got another sneak peek at what’s coming from the next Bad Moves LP, which of course has us stoked. Giant Day Share Ignore the Flood

Up until now, it felt very much like you could hear the Elephant 6 lineage in the earliest work from Giant Day, the new project from Derek Almstead (Olivia Tremor Control, Elf Power, etc) and Emily Growden. Their latest single and video completely turn the tables, however, pushing this proto-pop, brimming with a buoyant bass line that builds in a bob for the listener. But, Almstead’s expertise as a multi-instrumentalist allows him to create this pop quilt, whether that’s carefully bent guitar lines or synthetic notes that aid in the driving rhythm. Still, you’ll be seduced by Growden’s delivery, smoothly sliding her softened sound right in the midst of the musical melodies, bewildering the listener with the story of the Johnstown flood of 1889! Their debut, Glass Narcissus, will be out July 25th via Elephant 6 Recording Co.

Consider yourselves lucky! Three of the song’s I wrote about didn’t make DSPs yet, otherwise, you’d have a two hour playlist of joy to listen through today. Luckily, Australia was keeping it real, with new stuff from The Male Gays, Pop Filter, Kosmetika and Alluvial Nuggets all gracing the site. There was some Austin show coverage too, namely Mikky & the Doom and Adrianne Lenker, so jams from those acts get included. On the personal tip, I was really pulling for the Manners Manners and Nightshift to be big hits out there in the scene, with this new Parallel tune right behind it! There’s also some expansive jams too from the likes of Immersion and Nap Eyes, if you need a tune over 5 minutes for your life. Enjoy.

Giant Day Share We Were Friends

Derek Almstead has been working around the Elephant 6 Collective for some time, though I love his work with the Glands the most. As of the moment, he’s working on his new project with his wife Emily Growden named Giant Day, and they’ve released a brand new single from their next LP. When listening to their latest single, I can’t help but hear two very distinctive sounds working through: there’s a gentleness akin to Elliott Smith in the vocals and there’s a huge driving build that surrounds the voice. It’s like you can hear this delicate storyteller sitting inside a cocoon, only that cocoon has been crafted by this driving rhythmic wall of noise that’s inescapable. But, then again, you’d expect someone who has worked with the E6 to know all about building huge walls of sound in their craft. Oh, and speaking of, the band will release their new Glass Narcissus LP on August 23rd via Elephant Six!
