Kaputt Share Carnage Hall

Glaswegian act Kaputt seem to have answered a call of sorts put forth to them by many a no-wave act, most recently with Bodega coming to mind. For starters, the band’s spinning their political sensibilities in this tightly manufactured no-punk. The title-track from their forthcoming release is filled with these saxophone skronks and feverish bounce that’s sure to get an audience up and about; this all leads to a riotous tension that seems to put the band and listener on edge, shooting off-kilter chords to a calamitous close. Just imagine a less-formulaic Parquet Courts and you’re in the ballpark here. Carnage Hall drops on September 27th via Upset the Rhythm.

Spinning Coin Return with Visions at the Stars

I remember back in 2017 listening to Permo, and just being blown away by the distinctive style of songwriting that Glasgow’s Spinning Coin brought to the table; it always seemed like every person in the band had a little say in what was going to come across, making for a diverse listen. But, they’ve been super quiet until today when they announce a brand new 7″ with this joyous new single. It opens with some interesting vocals, perhaps from Rachel, kind of like something Dirty Projectors would have spun. But, it’s a nice juxtaposition for the relaxed feel of the rest of the track; I think it also brings in this slight melody very carefully that cruises through the song’s entirety. The video footage seems to have been filmed by the band themselves, which in general, is a sign of a band out having a fun time. You can grab the new 7″ on August 30th via Domino!

Vital Idles Announce New EP

Last summer, Vital Idles quietly released Left Hand; I’m not sure it got the appreciation it deserved in my neck of the woods. But, perhaps the sharpness of their new EP will put folks in the US on notice that they’re an outfit to keep an eye upon in the future, if not today. The bass line bounces the listener into the song as muted guitar riffs await the full barrage of the rest of the group; here, the band walk that fine line between minimalist pop and post-punk. I love how the lyrics are stretched over several chords in their delivery, though they do grow more frantic; that all culminates in a closing moment of discord for the last 45 seconds, with the band acting out just a wee bit more. They release their new EP on March 8th via Upset the Rhythm.

New Music From The Twilight Sad

Nathan and I’s slow, steady bromance started with The Twilight Sad headlining a show at Emo’s. Our manniversary. The last time I saw the band was opening for The Cure a couple years back. Those of you lucky enough to attend the Cure’s 40th Anniversary party in Hyde park may have been there early to see our friends from Scotland, along with Interpol and Slowdive and many others. Jealous.

The lads from Glasgow have a new track to share via Rock Action Records. With a textural undertone and the gradual surge inwards to focus on James’s vocal, which later gets buried again, the song navigates through all the things I love about the band. You can’t escape the accent, the deliberate clarity of core messages, the layers of guitar and synth that cause focus or escapism. There are new things for me here, or at least new application of familiar tools like how the piano comes in not to haunt or highlight, but to fill. Album news soon, they are touring in the fall, though staying on the west coast and before crossing the northern US and Canada and then heading back to Europe. Come to Austin – tacos, bromance and Lone Stars await.

Hot New Track From Holy Esque

Our Glasgow amigos in Holy Esque once played a show for me at Nomad, and I have remained a loyal fan ever since. It’s crazy that the band has been absolutely silent for about a year, but the guys are now ready to share with us what they’ve been working on for all that time. This new track, “I Am The Truth”, is to serve as a preview for the new full length LP entitled Television/Sweetwhich is due out June 8th via Beyond the Frequency. What can I say really, this is Holy Esque at their best and finest. A heavy synth, that always impressive gruff vocal, and of course the guitar freak out ending is always welcome. I say go on and pre-order the new record while you enjoy this one.

Brand New Spinning Coin Jam

Last year during SXSW, a good friend from across the pond threw a wonderful party of Glaswegian acts; it was there that I first fell in love with what Spinning Coin were doing. We’re inching closer towards the release of the band’s debut, and as such, we’ve got an incredible tune for you. I think there’s a great nod to the sort of soft post punk that permeated indie record stores in the 1980s. There’s hooks, but they’re not overbearing. You’ll hear male/female vocals, though not kitsch. You just don’t hear tunes like this, sadly, as I could use a whole lot more; I’ll get it on November 10th when Permo drops via Domino.

New Jam from Spinning Coin

I was fortunate to catch Spinning Coin at the Glasgow Buckaroo Ball, so as I went through my emails, this tune stood out, grinning at me, waiting for me to play it. It’s an out-of-tempo little gem, semi-shuffling with choppy guitar chords and the occasional emphatic shout from the distance. While there’s a definite pop sensibility within, you get the sense that this group is working outside the confines of tradition and style, brandishing their own flare as they push forward. They’ll release the Raining on Hope Street 7″ via Domino on March 24th.

The Glasgow Buckaroo Ball @ Mohawk (3.17)

For me, SXSW is all about friendships; you make new friends you’ll share a lifetime with, and ultimately, that’s what’s been so great for me the last twenty years of attending. One such friend hails from Glasgow, and he’s bringing a bunch of his friends over for an official showcase at Mohawk next Friday! The Glasgow Buckaroo Ball features hot Scottish acts like Pinact, The Pooches, Catholic Action, Happy Meals, Spinning Coin and Womps! Should be a great night where all our Scottish friends get to share in their love of Texas, so come find us boogieing all night long! Here’s a few jams to get you going.

WOMPS Kill it Again (SXSW band)

Man Glasgow band WOMPS truly resonates here at ATH. We’ve been pumping this band for a couple of years now and I know everyone here is finally happy to see them getting the attention they deserve in the bigger media outlets. Ahead of their appearance at SXSW next week, the band released this sweet new track on Monday entitled “Darling”. It reminds me a lot of what fellow Scots Glasvegas used to sound like before they, well… ya know. It’s a killer track.

Say hi to WOMPS on facebook for some SXSW dates and to give them a shout.
