Best Bets Drop Heaven Video

The Hollow Husk of Feeling can’t get here soon enough, but with the new Best Bets records still a few weeks away, they’ve offered up one more sneak peek into one of my most anticipated LPs of the Fall. The energy of this tune totally fits where I’m at this afternoon, kicking out some high-octane power-pop while the vocals are being stretched to the max. Again, not sure of the album as a whole, but it feels like they’re touching the highest peaks of the genre, flirting with edges of punk while adhering to a sensible melodic approach you can’t ignore. Make sure you grab a copy from Meritorio Records before the release date on September 27th.

bdrmm Bring You Synthy Dream Pop

bdrmm are a shoe gaze group based out of Hull, making, well, bedroom pop tracks for your dreams. They’ve just put out a new single called “Heaven,” which is below for your listening pleasure. From the moment the twangy guitars enter your ears, you just know that something special is brewing. Then you get those twee synths that smother the whole song in a layer of light, new wave funk. The vocals are soft and warm, balancing out the twang of the instrumentals almost as much as the ever-humming bass line does. Take a listen below and fall in deep with bdrmm.

Check Out Sunshine Gun Club

11990382_542581705911131_681168539957449137_nI think most of our readers interested in a little throwback action today will be down for this new song by Sunshine Gun Club. I’m hearing elements of bands like Wavves in this new song “Heaven”, mixed in with some fun and pop like sounds similar toThe Get Up Kids. Heavier, distorted guitars, but with a fun and catchy vibe if ya catch my drift? It’s an easy song to like and one I’m sure all of us can get on board with.

Debut albumHeavenwill come out on May 6th via Wiener Records.

Have You Heard New Lunchbox

lunchboxLunchbox returned last year with the most excellent, Lunchbox Loves You.  It seems to have ignited a fire beneath the band, as they’re already back with a brand new EP for your ears. It reminds me of taking the foundations of jangling indiepop and fusing it with the work of early Weezer (when everyone liked them, you know). Of course, that comparison brings nothing but hooks and great listens time and time again…there’s even some spots where you can fill in your own handclaps. You can grab their Smash Hits EP next week from Jigsaw Records.

Another Gem from The Bilinda Butchers

heavenI’ve written about the Bilinda Butchers on several occasions, and their label has put up the album for the lucky NYP…but I suggest you also order the white LP version of the band’s new album, Heaven.  One of the reasons I love their approach to the album is they’ve taken the story of a Japanese woman’s diary being written in the 1800s and allowed it to inform the record.  You have these interesting little instrumental pieces, or songs like the one below, all adding depth to the life of the character, Nakajima Ume. The more pop oriented tracks remind me of the Comas (who I miss). You can order the LP from Orchid Tapes if you so like (and you should).

New Music Premiere: The Bankees – Heaven 1 & 2

bankeesI’m going to support this band until the day I die, so I’m glad they’ve let us premiere one of their most accomplished tracks to date.  If you recall, last year I doted on Home, but the band has been hard at work crafting new sounds and a new record.  It’s titled Heaven, and currently is looking for a home (hit me up if you want to put this record out, and I’ll get you in touch).  Seeing as I’m familiar with the group, you can tell that they’ve developed their sound quite a bit, dabbling a bit in psychedelia, while still holding true to their affectingly warm pop.  I pray for big things, as the songs and the band truly deserve greater recognition.

Show Review: Beach House @ Stubbs (9.20)

In what was an absolutely hectic night for the Austin music scene, we started our evening at Stubbs catching two of the better acts in the whole scene, The Walkmen and Beach House.  For my two cents, there was only one clear-cut winner on the evening, but for that you’ll have to read on.

…not to mention you’ll get great pics from Brian Gray that you can’t get with your cellphone.

The Walkmen – Heaven

Rating: ★★★★☆

For a whole decade now, The Walkmen have been gracing your ears with their jangly rock music. Now, when I say that, I truly mean it; this band makes albums that linger in your music collection for long periods of time, seemingly timeless in their nature. Earlier albums proved rugged and loose, running wild with youthfulness and spunk, but as I said before, it’s been ten years, lead singer Hamilton Leithauser and company have grown up, and so has their music. Heaven is a testament to this, as the band brings you a different kind of rock album.

Right out of the gate, it’s clear to see the direction in which The Walkmen have decided to go with this seventh studio full-length release. “We Can’t Be Beat,” meanders its way to start, with Leithauser crooning along to some gentle guitar plucking, with sporadic “oohs” floating through the background. Even as the song picks up a bit at the end, the lushness is ever apparent through the use of layered vocals and delicate percussive elements. This lush sound is a general theme of the album, carrying through most of the songs in some shape or form. It’s extra present on some of the later tracks like “No One Ever Sleeps,” that focus on the vocals. A number on the slower side, it comes across as a bit of a lullaby with more billowy and wispy “oohs” that work their way through the lead. The song is gentle and sweet, juxtaposing Leithauser’s sharp voice with the softness of the backing instrumentation.

This group doesn’t have the same reckless abandon that they did when they first started out, but would you really want them to after ten years? A bunch of thirty-something year old guys who all have kids trying to act like kids? No, that would be silly and out of place. Instead, this band has a healthy alternative that still packs a punch for old fans. Songs like title track “Heaven” and “Heartbreaker,” incorporate old with new and are straight up catchy tunes. “Heartbreaker” is a song found early on the record that gets things moving with those rolling drums and hooky guitars, while “Heaven” is a summery sounding number that will have you tapping your toes. There will always be those who reminisce of the old days of this band when they put out jams like “Rat,” but there are acceptable rock songs on this effort as well.

Yes, it’s a grown up record, but by no means is it a snoozer. The Walkmen have made growing up something cool and envied, riding upon the waves of their musical and personal successes. They relish in their coming of age with grace, inviting you to come along for the ride. So join in with them and enjoy the beauty in Heaven.
