Half Dream Share Celia Video

It’s Monday, so I don’t want to ruin your musical week, but you’re all going to love this brand new track from Half Dream; it’s going to keep getting played in your head all week…sorry about that. Paige Berry owns this song; her voice falls somewhere between Angel Olsen and Sharon Van Etten, mixing heavy tones with angelic sparkle that rises in the mix. I love how the band sets the song up, Berry and a few riffs riding through the Texas countryside before the drums drop in to thicken the mixture, adding in a natural hook to bury the song deep within your subconscious. This track appears on the band’s forthcoming Monster of Needing EP, which drops on April 2nd. But, if you’re in Austin, the group celebrate the release of this new single this Thursday at Hotel Vegas; you can find out more details HERE.

Chill Russell Share New Single + Hotel Vegas Show

Our friends in Chill Russell love to brandish their pop rock licks all over our town, and tonight they’re going to be doing so with a new set of tunes beneath their belt. They’ve got a show tonight at Hotel Vegas, and they’re very likely to play this brand new single off their forthcoming EP (recorded with Frenchie Smith). They toss out some solid alternative riffs and attitude for the verses, but this track definitely gets its punch in the chorus; it almost sounds like they were listening to The Breeders “Cannonball,” with just a hint more venom in there. They release the single and celebrate in style over at Hotel Vegas at normal adult hours, doors are at 7 PM.

Loving Share Only She Knows

It looks as if I’m continuing with my Fall musical appreciation hour, following up the earlier Kevin Scoma tune with this new finger-picking slow burner from Loving. It’s the sort of fireside chat with your stereo you wish you could have throughout those cool Autumn nights, harmlessly lost on some wisp of air that finds its way to your ear. Every note is so careful, such attention given to each detail that it’s purposefulness evolves into this charmingly organic feeling. This is what you can expect from the band’s LP, out next year via Last Gang Records; they’re on tour through North America (Austin show at Hotel Vegas on 10/11) as we speak, with UK/EU dates throughout November.

Aquarian Blood Share New Tune + ATX Show Tonight at Vegas

You’d think a band comprised of members of Ex Cult and NOTS (formerly) would have some sort of monstrous presence in a new project. But, that’s exactly why I love Aquarian Blood, and in fact, why I’ve always loved rock n’ roll. This isn’t a banger, or a ripper; it’s a stripped down ballad that’s about as intimate as they come. The vocals are wholly solemn, almost weary from a live well-lived. I guess for me, the band just hit that sweet spot of not-quite folk; you can hear the musical lineage on both sides of the coin, particularly with the great arrangements fleshing out the tune. This tune will be on A Love That Leads to War, the new LP out October 11th via Goner Records.

Plus! If you’re in Austin, you can catch the band with Thigh Master at Hotel Vegas tonight!

The Sour Notes Share New Single

The Sour Notes, always adventurous, have decided they’re going to release their new album one 7″ at a time, and today we’ve got the latest single from the series for you to enjoy. This one should come as no surprise if you listened to their ambitious collection This Is Not Our Music; I mean, if you don’t hear Galaxie 500 in here, I don’t know what you’re thinking. I love the softness of Jared’s voice on this, matched up against the heavy riffs that sort of billow in and out of the mix. It’s the sort of slow churning pop music you wish they had at your middle school dance, so you could fall in love and feel totally cool while doing it. Austin folks can get their hand on the new 7″ on June 13th at Hotel Vegas for the release show!

SXSW: 6 Bands To Watch

Well SXSW music is officially here, and as I sit and ponder my existence while at work, I thought it would be fun to share some advice on bands to watch for the week. Of course you know how many bands are in town so the list can be incredibly overwhelming and daunting. After a quick scan, I picked out 6 of my “must sees” for the week in hopes you might find something to seek out. Why 6? I have no idea honestly but it seemed like enough to kick start your brain. Hit the jump for my list with some music samples.

Bad Sports Share New Video, Playing Hotel Vegas on March 27

Bad Sports have dropped a new video for the track, “Don’t Deserve Love,” off their recent Dirtnap Records LP,Constant Stimuation. The video shows a drunken night for a sad bastard kind of character that aptly fits the title of the video and, naturally, the anthem of the song. It’s a punk ripper with a catchy chorus that you’ll be singing along to in no time. I will warn fellow Austinites– this video may feel all too familiar to you or remind you of someone you know or maybe last night out on 12th Street (hopefully not).

Bad Sports are kicking off a good sized US tour with a night at Hotel Vegas on March 27, you know, after that SXSW thing is done.

ATH vs SOTO Annual SXSW Party!!!

Every year, we gather with our frienemies over at Side One Track One, and throw down a huge show over at Hotel Vegas/Volstead. As is the case every year, we have 30 bands from all over Austin, and a few on the ATH Records roster. When we set up this years show, we wanted to make sure the bands all had new music on the way in 2019…and that seems to be the case. You can click on this glorious photo to see the show poster, or head over to the FB Event Page to see who all is going to show up. The show takes place Sunday, March 10th…and its absolutely free! Really stoked to see our friend Ram Vela return to the stage with his new band. Plus, ATH acts the Hermits, Being Dead and She Sir sharing their new tunes!

Show Preview: Smokescreens at Hotel Vegas (8/23)

Thursday night is as good a night as any for a rock show, and all of Austin is in for a treat, should they choose to visit Hotel Vegas on said night. You get two great traveling acts in the Molochs and Smokescreens, the latter associated to our site’s highly regarded fave label, Slumberland Records…not to mention a Terry Malts/Business of Dreams connection. If you haven’t, as we suggested, picked up Used to Yesterday, then we suggest you do so now. The Molochs, for their part, will likely play a good deal off their forthcoming LP, Flowers in the Spring, so why not sneak a peak? And, both Tres Oui and the Zoltars will be peforming on the night, both ATH approved! Doors are at 9!

Karen Meat and Lola Tried at Hotel Vegas Tonight

Sure, it’s all sorts of hot outside. But, the best part about Summer (at this point, anyways) is that it does tend to cool off at night. What better way to cool off than hitting up a solid little rock show at Hotel Vegas tonight. Lola Tried recently returned from a nice long tour, so you can bet they’re a well-oiled machine…more so than usual. But those looking to get something extra will enjoy Karen Meat, who just recently released You’re An Ugly Person via Emotional Response…and which we’ve mentioned previously. The songs are catchy and infinitely witty…and you might just leave having snuck in one of the best kept secrets in indie rock circles.
