K. Campbell Releases Brand New Single

Sitting here on Wednesday, I feel like we could all be friends. I want to make your day better with a few sweet tunes, which is why I’m bringing you this new tune from Houston’s K. Campbell! The artist dropped this new single, with this refreshing blend of power and indie pop; it’s got this remarkably charming vocal delivery, with just enough bite to really keep you coming back time and time again. Plus, if you’re willing to indulge, there’s a nice little horn solo waiting for you in the middle, which is the perfect sign of a great pop song giving you that little bit extra.

Cameron Sonnier Shares Sunshine

I never really moved on from sweepingly dramatic pop music, which is why the craft of Cameron Sonnier really hits home…that and he’s from Houston, which ain’t too far away. This track drops into the hook zone immediately with the beat working beneath the jangling strum; delivering the first lines of “champagne/cocaine/magazine/I can give you anything you need,” immediately ups the ante, opening the door for this broad melody. In the production you can hear these little washes of atmospheric synths, texturing the world that Cameron’s created. This is our first listen to the work he’s composed for his forthcoming debut, Tunnels, expected to hit later this year.

Banger From Mother Ghost

Oscar and Thomas Flores are a brother duo from Houston who record under the moniker Mother Ghost. As our brothers to the east, we are happy to report that the boys have recently wrapped up their debut full length LP with plans to drop it later this week. Prior to the end of the week, we are pleased to blast this new singled called “Mother Ghost”. It’s sort of a dark, brooding take on new wave with an incredibly slick baseline and a hauntingly similar sound to a certain Wang Chung song (if it was slowed down and turned into horror pop). Help me in supporting our new friends over in H-Town.

Mother Ghost will release Somnmbulo this Friday, September 10th via Geodesic Records.

Stream New EP From Low Horizon

Houston based outfit Low Horizon came onto my radar a couple of years ago and I’ve been eagerly awaiting new music from the band ever since. Well now the trio are back with not just one, but three new tunes on a brand new EP of material entitled Two Days. The EP highlights the bands sort of old school, garage rock meets indie sound similar to bands like Sleater-Kinney or Built to Spill. I’ve been lucky enough to share the stream for you fans, and if you dig it, consider throwing them a few dollars over on bandcamp for a download. Viva la Texas!

K. Campbell Shares Every Little Thing

We’ve gotta rep the Texas scene, even beyond Austin, so when I heard this new track from K. Campbell drop the other day, I knew I had to share it with you immediately. It’s solid piece of power pop, falling somewhere between the landscape of Nada Surf and Teenage Fanclub, which doesn’t seem a bad place to find yourself. Soft melodic vocals glue the track together nicely, and the noisier bits get sanded along the edges, really polishing off the pop sensibility in the perfect way. If this is your style, as it should be, there’s a wonderful 7″ that features this track available HERE.

Later Nader Drops On My Way

Kind of got get out of the weekend headspace, and this track from Houston’s Later Nader definitely feels like you’re crawling out of your cave, still in a fog. It’s got that sort of bedroom production, which makes sense considering that’s where Nader Ibrahim is crafting his tunes. There’s this perfect escapism in his work, at least if you’re into this track. Still, he’s able to kind of lock you in with his vocals, kind of tethering the voice to your soul as the atmosphere circles up behind you. Get out of bed and into the music below…and if you dig, it’s NYP on Bandcamp!

Young Mammals Share Lost in Lima

As a Texas based blog, we’ve got to rep the state whenever possible, especially when its an act we’re already committed to: Young Mammals. They’ve recently announced Lost in Lima, their new LP…and below it the album’s title track; they had me hooked before hearing the song when they name dropped Wire and Neruda in the recording process. For my two cents, this song is bordering on jangle; it’s got its own bit of fog that sort of hangs over the group, which actually makes the pop sensibility billow through your speakers as things progress. I love the softness of the vocals, like a nice bit of frosting on an already delicious cake. The new record will be out on Wallflower Records on June 22nd.

Pleased To Meet You: Low Horizon

Low Horizon is an up and coming 4 piece band straight out of our friendly neighbor city to the East, Houston, TX. The band is a totally DIY effort, recording music on their own with plans to self-release a debut album on May 10th entitled Eternal Depressed Summer. For a preview of the band’s work, we’ve been cleared to share this new single, “Eternal Summer”. For me, the band create this infectious blend of 90s indie rock with an updated, higher quality production to deliver something new and unique. Nice to meet you.

Gimme 5 – Wild Moccasins

After the great many successes of my Gimme 5 playlist feature, I thought it was nigh time we feature a Texas based artists on this thing. Imagine my luck, Houston based band Wild Moccasins are coming through town on January 17th at Stubbs Jr. and they were feeling the idea. Zahira Gutierrez, who fronts the band, chose five songs which truly inspire her and bring her joy as she creates her own music. Rose Ette Share Latest Single

Not more than a month ago, Houston’s Rose Ette dropped Ignore the Feeling via Miss Champagne Records. But, since music never dies, we’re here to share the album’s title track with you, if only to remind you of how great the entirety of the LP is. The twisting and turning of the guitar is beautiful, if not sedated, setting the stage so the vocal melodies can take control of your ears. You’ll find the lyrical content matching the yearning mood of the song, looking back on something you can’t quite escape. The distorted guitar touch at the end is perfect, wrapping up the track in the most concise manner possible, leaving you with just a bit of an edge. Grab the LP HERE; the vinyl version drops in January.
