day-for-night-sun-324We heard such great things about the inaugural Day for Night Fest that B. Gray and I just had to attend this year…that and Aphex Twin was playing. It was definitely a special experience, with far more highs than lows, thus rendering this year’s festival a success in our eyes.

You can follow below for our highlights. And stay tuned for more photos from B.

Blast This Young Mammals Track

youngmammalsMan. Houston and their “young” bands! We released the latest Young Girls record this past spring, and now we’re rocking out to this new Young Mammals tune. The bands have similar sounds, maximizing the blend between rock n’ roll and huge pop hooks; you’ll find all the songs just as infectious as this new single…hopefully getting your attention as they blast towards the release of their full length. This track wears the name of the album’s title, Jaguar, and Odd Hour Records will be releasing it on October 28th. Stomp those feet and dig the hooks!

Classic Alternative Sound from The Valery Trails

valeryPart Australia, part Texas…that’s the story of The Valery Trails. Their sound, well, it’s going to take you back to classic 90s radio sounds, filled with a solid melody and distorted guitars. The chorus of “you are ok, we are ok,” is catchy too, so you’ll have something to sink your teeth into while you jam this one. Think of bands like REM or maybe a happier Dinosaur Jr and you’ll no right where this group stands. They’ll release their new LP, Chameleon Bones, on August 5th, so look to the end of your summer for this rad release.

I’ve been waiting to share the entirety of Party Blood with you; it’s my favorite thing they’ve done, and I think you’re all just going to fall in love. We don’t need any more hyperbole though, so stream it below. If you want, order it from the ATH Records site (it comes with a free 7″ for the first few weeks).

Listen to New Tunes from Telephantom

telephantomTelephantom is one of the rising stars of Houston’s music scene, and we got turned onto the band via the participation of Nick, who plays drums in Young Girls. The group just uploaded three new tracks, all danceable pop music geared at pure listener enjoyment. They specialize in spinning bright harmonies around the trading of male/female vocals, emphatically aided by deep synthesized beats. I have a feeling you’re going to want to turn these tracks up loud, then just let yourself go while you try to wake the downstairs neighbor with your carefree dance stylings.

Since we’re the kids behind the release of the album, we wanted to make sure it ended up on your radar! Young Mammals Return With A Hit

389868_10150534123080912_1744921978_nIt’s been a hot minute since I’ve heard anything from our Houston brothers in Young Mammals and I was actually curious recently as to what they’ve been up to.  Well apparently they’ve been hard at work on some tunes for a brand new EP due out later this month.  As a preview of their new direction, check out this promising new single called “Doctor Doctor” below.  I’m already imagining the band playing this song live in my head and how it surely has to be a badass thing to behold.  Here’s to hoping that these guys start earning some of the popularity they truly deserve.

New EP Cease & Desist is available for pre-order now on bandcamp (out November 13th).

Playful New Telephantom Tune

telephantomAustin gets a lot of hype as the hub of the Texas music scene, but I’ve really noticed an increase in the work coming out of Houston…and I’ve got my eyes on Telephantom.  They just keep pushing out these tunes that make me want to don some dapper shoes and hit the dance floor…though not too heavy…probably some cool guy sway.  There’s no word on an official release, but you can tell the band is well on their way to crafting a record filled with warm pop sensibility whilst kicking a little beat below the surface.  Can’t wait to hear more.

Introducing Telephantom

10349194_813275075400291_8705944154510680169_nOne of the great things about running your own site is you get to write about whatever the fuck you want, especially your friends bands.  Here I am today introducing you to my friend Nick’s band, Telephantom.  Nick plays drums in Young Girls, but this new act he’s working with is pure synth pop.  There’s obviously an energetic push in the front with that hooky synth line.  The more I listen, the more it reminds me of this band Soviet who I used to dance to all day long in my room.  Not sure what the future recording plans are for these guys, but they’ll have a show in Houston this Saturday at Fitzgerald’s…you know, if you’re out that way.

Have You Listened to Buxton?

buxtonBuxton seems like it’s been one of Houston’s best-kept secrets; I know tons of folks who’ve caught wind of the band, yet they never seem to get that one would expect.  But, they’ve just completed their third record, and this appears to be the one that’s going to reach the masses and gain the following they deserve.  This tune starts off with a stuttering guitar line before taking it’s stride with a nice little bopping drum beat. You’ll hear the musicianship that’s present on this new LP, Half a Native, as the song unfolds, with nice little doses guitars twanging.  Look for their new LP this March via New West Records.
