New Music from Moses Nesh

It seems like folk/blues influences songwriters are a dime-a-dozen, but lets not dump Moses Nesh into that bunch. His style is something far removed from the modern genre, but if anything, its much closer to the origin of the style. He employsornate chord work, and his vocals are often obscured by what seems to be a desire to use the voice as another instrument, another layer to his soulful sound. Don’t worry, the chorus on this number has some clarity, reinforced by a female counterpoint that provides a taste of the sublime. One can only imagine what its like to sit in the presence of Moses, but the buzzing strings in your speaker might just bring your ears closer…bring you closer to whatever it is you’re seeking, as well as Nesh. His new album No Labor Saving-Machine is out this Friday via Keeled Scales.

He’ll be playing in Austin on May 4th with Julia Lucille at the Cactus Cafe.

ATX Spotlight: That Julia Lucille Video I Need to Post

Feel like I could definitely (and will) do more on International Women’s Day, so what better way than to celebrate one of our favorite Austin artists, Julia Lucille. Recently she released this video for “Darkening,” one of the many beautiful tracks on her forthcoming Chthonic LP…and, well, I think you should watch it. The way the video was shot (by Jordan Moser) perfectly matches the song’s mood; it’s also a pretty sparse song, lyrically, illustrating just how much power Julia can carry with the simplest approaches. Oh, and she’ll be playing at our ATH vs SOTO Showdown this Sunday over at Hotel Vegas. Her album will be released by our friends at Keeled Scales on April 7th.

More Psych Bliss From RF Shannon

Oh man, I am getting too excited for the upcoming full length album from Austin’s RF Shannon. They shared the title track from their upcoming release yesterday, and it beautiful, other-worldly trip into sun bleached psychedelia that the band does so well. It opens slowly with flute sounds and tinkering piano sounds, like a sleepy day begins, but then suddenly it picks up as the sun always seem to arrive and turn the sky rose before you realize it. Hazy vocals and steady percussion move the song along, accompanied by twangy guitars.Just when you think the song can’t get any more devastatingly beautiful, some female vocals join Shane Renfro, and you’re simply smitten in the psych-desert-blues glory of the song. Take a listen below.

ATX Spotlight: More New Julia Lucille

While Julia Lucille has more than made a name for herself since her move to Austin, she’s clearly going for big things with her next release, Chthonic. This new single starts memorably enough, with this ghostly charm haunting your ears…the music sits back behind Julia. But, there’s a brilliant songwriting touch at the 2 minute mark, with quieted guitar ringing carefully, almost crafting a synthetic effect behind the vocals (all courtesy of Paul Mitchell of Tapajenga). This is one of those tunes that’s easiest to describe if you simply call it other-worldly; it’s quality continues to unfold as the song does. Look for her new effort on April 7th via Keeled Scales. Austin folks can catch her Saturday night at Mohawk with Molly Burch and Cross Record.

ATX Spotlight: More New Knife in the Water

If you’re not anticipating the new Knife in the Water record, then perhaps you’ve lost something. But, now’s your chance to find it, as the band have released another single leading up to the release of Reproduction. While I love the slide guitar work, I think the intimacy of the track is what I find so appealing; it sort of reminds me of a Dean Warehampenned track, moving ever so gracefully, offering solace to anyone willing to take it. Texturally, you’ve got the sliding guitar, but there’s also some heavy strumming that makes it’s way through the speakers in the perfect way, adding a depth to an already brilliant piece. Keeled Scales will be releasing the LP on March 3rd.

While Julia Lucille may not be an Austin native, her arrival and presence in our city and state has surely inspired her latest musical outing. This sprawling number wears the soul of nights spent cruising down empty highway rods, aided by slide guitar from RF Shannon‘s Luke Dawson. While it opens with the voice and very very light strumming, the song soon takes off to other-worldly heights, soaking it in extra bits of reverb and textural touches that create the song’s depth. Imagine yourself dancing in the arms of your love in some small town tavern, while an unknown chanteuse serenades you; it’s the best bit of music escapism. Look for Julia’s new record, Chthonic, via Keeled Scales on April 7th.

ATX Spotlight: Brand New Knife in the Water Tune

knifeinwaterKnife in the Water have been fairly quiet since 2003, though we should have all started gearing up our anticipation for new work when the band popped up at the Austin Jukebox gig earlier this year. Luckily, that time is drawing nearer, and we can all purchase the band’s first new single, which is streaming below. The track is a sprawling bit of ambient Americana, such that fits perfectly into the lives of those who’ve venture across the vast expanse of Texas. Like all things, the band has aged remarkably well, and their musical return illustrates perfect restraint and polish, making this an outstanding song you’ll need to get to know. It’s released this Friday, November 11th, via Keeled Scales, who will release their long-awaited new record, Reproduction, in Marchof next year.

ATX Spotlight: New Music from RF Shannon

I’ve been a fan of RF Shannon since I caught wind of their work via Punctum Records, and now Shane Renfro ismoving forward with thebrand new Other Trails EP. Perhaps one of my favorite things about the project is that it consistently acknowledges the influence of Texas, be it in the sound, or the imagery, like in the video below. You get a bit of both here, which is just another reason to keep an eye on all the work that’s promised to be on its way; not to mention that there’s always this level of thoughtfulness streaming from RF Shannon releases. I don’t really need to say more than that you’ll enjoy this tune, and probably the EP when it’s released on October 21st via Keeled Scales.

tonyEarlier this year, Austin’s Real Live Tigers released Denatured via Keeled Scales; it’s the perfect Austin album, relying upon great lyricism and folk aesthetics. But, in case you haven’t really gotten to know the band or its songs, then perhaps this great new video for “Leave a Map” will encourage your listening. Not only is the video shot beautifully, but the narrative also grasps the beauty of this track too, especially in its message of leaving something behind, something positive that can serve as your mark…where others will see your trials and tribulations as accomplishments along life’s path. Lauren Green and the Old is New

lrnMany of you are surely (hopefully) aware of Lauren Green, one of the lead songwriters behind Austin/New Mexico act, Mirror Travel. While she just released Cruise Deal (Mod Out) this last week, she also quietly released a few EPs over the last few years that may have gone unnoticed. That is unless you were Keeled Scales, who will be compiling her two EPs (Grape Perfume/Easy Spirits) into one great cassette for your listening pleasure. I put the latest of the two, Grape Perfume, below for you to sample, as I think it’s my favorite of the two. It’s great to see a different mindset and songwriting structure for someone we’ve listened to for so long. You can order the cassette right HERE…and stream one of the two EPs below.
