Slow Pop from Eccentric BlaBla

The great thing about falling in love with a label like Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten is that you generally know that even when they take a left turn, you’re going to find something new and rewarding. Enter Eccentric BlaBla, from Augsburg. They definitely have a pop lineage, which is more than clear when you listen to this tune, but I was most attracted to the jazzier underbelly of the track. I felt like I was in some lounge sipping a martini while two magnificent voices dueled with one another, and I didn’t mind…not one bit. No word on the exact sort of release, but I have a feeling something wickedly good this way comes.

Jetstream Pony Share Trapped in Amber

Amidst the Friday bandcamp fanaticism, music world still went on, so I wanted to be sure you didn’t skip over the latest single from Jetstream Pony and their forthcoming self-titled LP. To me, this is one of those classic guitar pop tracks; the guitars ring, with just the faintest jangling dangling out in the air; the drums are sharp and steady, keeping things on track with just the right punchiness. Of course, it only succeeds if the vocals wash over us, blowing cooly through the speakers like that feather in Forest Gump. The band will release their self-titled LP on May 22nd via Shelflife and KUS, but you better hurry, as there aren’t many copies left!

Jetstream Pony Announce Debut Album

Jetstream Pony announced themselves to the world with the incredible Like You Less/Had Enough 7″; they followed that up with the excellent Self Destruct Reality EP and a few more singles. But today is the day we’ve all been anxiously awaiting, as the band announce their self-titled debut LP! A slight angular guitar opens the scene before a wall of distortion comes crashing through your speakers, carefully balanced by Beth’s cooly delivered vocals; Shaun helps add further balance with his deeper vocal notes adding in a perfect foil. While it’s easy to get swept away in the perfection of guitar pop, what I love is how much space the band leave in between; they’re savvy vets, not rushing to fill every second of the song, allowing you to just get lost in the wash of dazzling pop noise. Their self-titled record will be out later this year via Shelflife Records and Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten.

Cozy Slippers Share Will You Disappear Video

Last summer, Cozy Slippers released a delightful 7″ for one of our favorite labels, KUS; we raved about it at the time…and I included it in my year-end indiepop wrap-up. Today, we get another chance to celebrate that release, with the band sharing a video for the B-Side “Will You Disappear?” The video was shot on phone cameras by the band in November as the group toured through the UK. You get a little bit of their journey, bringing you closer to the band, but also some live footage spliced in too! So go on, go on tour with Cozy Slippers and enjoy this little pop tune. Jetstream Pony Share I Close My Eyes Video

I’m a few days late to the game, but the new track from Jetstream Pony is just to good not to share with you all, especially as I’m the 666th viewer of the below video! Counting in with drum sticks, the song almost immediately jumps into this fuzzy stomp from the rhythm section, keeping your head bobbing for a solid 2.5 minutes. Of course, the light jangle and ring of the guitars crafts the perfect juxtaposition there, which sets the mood for the warm emotions of the vocals; I like how they stay steady and calm until the slight pop turn of the chorus comes in to play. This gem is on their brand new 7″ for Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten, out tomorrow…but hopefully there’s a full length just around the bend.

Please to Meet You: The New Mourning

Thomas Pronai has a pretty extensive music career in Austria, both as a musician and engineer, but for many folks, myself included, The New Mourning is our first introduction to Pronai’s work. It’s already got the backing of James from Ultimate Painting (who recorded it) and Pete Astor (who plays on it), so you know that it’ll easily get my stamp of approval…oh, and it’s being release by KUS (easily one of my favorite labels). The song they’ve presented from their new single is this not quite psychedelic pop ditty; it has this bright guitar presentation, with the slightest hint of that acid washed world. That said, its the vocals that sort of take on a mantra of their own that really seals the deal…the simplest little line and yet its been stuck in my head all morning. Desert Souls Drop Turtle

It’s been a hot minute since I got excited about a band that brandished the sort of garage style that was popular all the rage upon its reemergence. Desert Souls, however, seem like they’re up to something great on this brand new single from the German outfit. Things seem all ramshackle and joyous from the get-go; it’s that classic train flying off the rails style we here at ATH enjoy. But, what sold me, was the hook in the chorus from the vocals. I love the way “me” gets stretched out higher, as it definitely got its hooks in me. This jam appears on the group’s mini-LP Back to the Coast, which is out next week via KUS.

Cozy Slippers Announce New 7″

I feel like it’s getting to the point where any time that I see a new release pop up from Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten that I should just expect greatness. Luckily, when it comes to news of a fresh 7″ from Cozy Slippers, I was already up to date on the band, having been a fan of their Postcards EP (Jigsaw 2018). Their return has those early jangling notes turn more into a woozy dream vibe; they still have the same sharpness, but they meander just a bit on the edges, which actually opens the song up for one of those classic vocal performances. There’s an earnest to the lyrical delivery; it almost feels as if you can hear it as an homage to Jett or Harry in their hey-day…it sparkles but brims with bravado. The new 7″ will be available this Friday via KUS.

The BVs Share Catapult Video

If you haven’t read my Albums of the Year…so Far, you should; you’ll find Cartography, the latest effort by the BVs hanging in the top ten. Today, you’re further encouraged to adore the band by watching their new video for album stunner, “Catapult.” In regards to the track itself, it features these deepened vocal tones working over these guitar chords that seem to dart off into the far horizon; they all swirl and mesh together for a beautiful chorus. This video version is part lyric video, part tour diary; I love the tour diary aspect, as it captures what life on the road is for so many bands…trying to make sense of it all and crack a smile while dealing with the mundane life inside a car/van. Their album is being repressed by KUS…and they’ve got dates all through the UK next week.

When you get an email about new music coming from Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten, if you’re me, you listen up. Today I’m really excited to share this tune from Desert Souls, a German outfit walking that rare ground where indiepop and psychedelia bleed into one another. Here we kick things off with a raucous crowd before the band bounce into a wayward garage jangle, almost surf-y in presentation. Then come the deep vocal tones, sort of delivered in this haunting fashion, sure to make sure the syllables land on beat with the drum work. Behind it all are these great backing vocals, swelling the song’s natural pop sensibility, while the vocals and the guitar tend to shift towards a Death Valley dance show. Keep your eyes peeled for more from this outfit, as KUS turns everything into gold!
