Austin Weekend Show Spotlight

austin_live_music_retailrSometimes the madness that is the Austin music scene just never stops.  This week’s been pretty ridiculous as it is, but the great shows keep coming…and I’m not just talking about that Vampire Weekend or Cloud Nothings show; there are some incredible local bills to catch, including a pretty awesome release show.  Here’s my suggestions on where you might want to find yourself this weekend. John Laird Turns 30 @ Holy Mountain – Tonight!

Going on 30 - BadgeThere’s a small little “blog” community in Austin, and we’re happy to be part of it; it also means we’ve got to support the other people involved, like John Laird of Side One Track One, who celebrates his 30th year of life with great music for you at Holy Mountain.  You’ll get to hear LA Snacks, Letting Up Despite Great Faults, The Sour Notes, Space Camp Death Squad and Miss Manners, with the first band kicking things off at 9 PM.  It’ll only cost you $5 to get in and support the bands, plus there will be drink specials and free cupcakes (while they last). Come out and support the locals and celebrate birthdays!

It’s been a great week so far for local shows, and we see no reason not to continue the Austin artist fun at Mohawk on Friday night.  Headlining and putting this whole thing together to celebrate their 9th year together are Austin’s very own rockers The Midgetmen.  Never the type to half ass anything, the boys have a stellar local show lined up featuring La Snacks, San Saba County, The Blistering Speeds, The Pons, Shells, Through the Trees, and The Sour Notes.  Also expect some tasty free beverages provided by Treaty Oak Rum and Graham’s Texas Tea.  Be there Ausinites!  While we’re at it, here’s the opening number “Beer’s Gone” to the Midgetmen’s new album Loud Enough.

Not too long ago, we shared some info about Austin band La Snacks and their upcoming new 7″ vinyl single.  Well the boys have reached the physical release date of their new material and plan to celebrate with a show at Hole in the Wall on Thursday night.  The lineup continues to build with solid locals Zoltars, The Gary, and The Calm Blue Sea.  I can’t imagine a better lineup of up and coming Austin bands.  Oh and the whole thing is a measly $3 so  you better be there.

New Music From La Snacks

It’s been quite some time since I’ve heard any news coming from an old local favorite La Snacks.  Well the guys are in fact still together and are actually prepping the release of a new 7″ single come this April.  Below you’ll find one of two tracks on the release called “My Little Sugary Friend”.  You can also check out new song “Christ Sakes and Milkshakes” over on the La Snacks bandcamp page.  Both songs are making me hope that the guys are gonna stick around for awhile this time and not keep us so worried about their state of being.

We really dug their new album and now we are excited to see that Thao & The Get Down Stay Down are making their way to the Mohawk on Thursday night.  Opening support is rather interesting and is provided by Portland Cello and David Schultz.  Be sure to stick around after Thao finishes up for some solid local bands on the inside stage including LA Snacks and DJ John Gross

LA Snack @ Club de Ville (6/13)

lakicksOur friends over at Party Ends have a sweet show planned for Saturday night at Club de Ville here in Austin.  The all local lineup includes up and comers LA Snacks, Deleted Scenes, Loxsly and a DJ set by John Gross.  Show starts at 9pm.  This should be a cheap way to get your live music fix on an otherwise boring Saturday night.
