Fresh New Jam from Let’s Wrestle

lets_wrestle_web_1It’s weird how quickly Let’s Wrestle blew into our lives, then quietly faded away.  But, that doesn’t mean I wasn’t keep an eye on the group…though it’s much harder from overseas. They’ve recently released their latest album, which is actually their first self-titled record.  I beg you to find a way to get it in your hands, as it’s one of those records that will undeservedly fly under the radar. This song is one of my favorites; it shows just how mature the songwriting has gotten over the years, from the steadier pace to the use of string arrangements.  Reminds me of the old school Brit-pop, just re-imagined; you can grab it from Fortuna Pop.

Fresh New Music from Let’s Wrestle

lets_wrestle_web_1Since 2010, Let’s Wrestle have been high on our radar.  We were even fortunate to have them play one of our SXSW parties that year, which featured other great acts like Surf City and The Crayon Fields.  The band have been largely under the radar for awhile, but they’re new effort seems to take on a slightly different approach to things.  Where the band once pushed forward with jangling guitar chords at a frenetic pace, you’ll now find a relaxed setting for the group to really work on their craft, slowing things down quite a bit.  It’s hard not to like these guys; you can find their next LP on Fortuna Pop sometime in 2014.[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/121021368″ params=”color=ff6600&auto_play=false&show_artwork=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Let’s Wrestle – Nursing Home

Rating: ★★★½☆

In a year’s short time, it appears that Let’s Wrestle has come a long way. After releasing and impressive debut in 2010, they’ve worked hard over the past year to push for another stellar alternative rock album. They stick to their guns on Nursing Home, using the formula for success that they accumulated on the past record.

Things start off with “In Dreams Part 2,” which gives a preview as to what this band can bring to the table in raw form. It begins slowly for the first few seconds, and then Let’s Wrestle kicks you in the face with their raw guitars. Then Wesley Gonzalez begins the iteration of his dreams, which seem strange, but it is only fitting, as they are someone else’s dreams. It’s an interesting and intriguing start off typical of this band. On the next song, “If I Keep On Loving You” they keep up their furious brit-punk stylings, but crank up the catchiness. I mean, you start off with some throbbing bass, add in the matted drums of the slight shriek of Gonzalez, and it’s love at first listen. For such a valid start, it’s easy to feel like the only way that Let’s Wrestle can go from here is up, and, it’s a pretty valid conclusion to come to.

This band goes on in their common fashion, but the songwriting feels a tad more complex on Nursing Home. They tackled dreams on track one, love on track two, living in the suburbs on track three, taking care of a mother on track six, the list goes on, etc. “For My Mother” comes as a bit of a standout for this band, both in the songwriting sense and in the typical sound of Let’s Wrestle. It’s a song without the classic raw guitar and the blasting cymbals and an emphasis on the delicacy of such a slow punk tune. There still are the perfectly imperfect vocals and the edginess, but it’s channeled into the soft plucking of the guitar along with the faint drums.

The only problem that I have seem to come across on Nursing Home is that there are a few, and I mean a few, songs that I can see myself passing by on future listens. On the last album, every track was a good pop-rock tune, destined for repeated listening, but there are a few that fall flat when you reach the end of the album. Perhaps it is just the nature of this style of brief songs, but overall, it’s a fairly decent album that will have you tapping your toes and clapping your hands to the fast paced beats.

New Music From Let’s Wrestle

Former ATH showcasing band Let’s Wrestle are getting ready to release their sophomore LP Nursing Home later this year on Merge Records.  The album sees the guys growing up quite a bit and moving forward with a heavier sound.  If this single “Dear John” is any indication of what to expect on the new record, I’ll be in line to give it a listen come May 17th.

Free Merge Spring Sampler

It’s that time of year again for all of us to begin reflecting on the first third of our year in the music world.  Merge has of course released some stellar albums in these first 4 months of 2010 and they’re celebrating that with a free 14 track digital sampler.  Awesome songs from She & Him, Destroyer, Let’s Wrestle, and tons of others are including.  The Sampler is currently available for free download via Amazon.  This also gives me another excuse to post up one of my favorite songs of the year from Merge band Wye Oak.

Let’s Wrestle – In the Court of Wrestling Let’s

Rating: ★★★★☆

Originally, the UK trio Let’s Wrestle released their album In the Court of Wrestling Let’s in 2009 in England, but fortunately, those clever lads at Merge Records got a hold of it.  They’ve re-released this record here in the United States, and every listener will forever be indebted to them for doing so.  Let’s Wrestle is an honest band, bound by no pretension, built to cheer you on towards brighter days and generally just make you smile.

“My Arms Don’t Bend That Way, Damn It” opens this sixteen song delight, and despite some rather somber lyrics, the jangling guitar lines and furious drum pounding indicate a narrator, and perhaps a band, pushing towards frivolous days.  This happy assault on your ears always seems to carry more serious undertones, but in disguising it as they do, you can’t help but pogo along.

You’ll absolutely love listening to “Tanks.”  It definitely has a very British sound to it, as the bass bobs in line with the guitar work.  Every bit of this song sounds utterly familiar, yet it stands out in a very distinctive manner, which recalls the early work of The Wedding Present.  Similarly, the “ba, ba, ba” chorus that runs throughout “We Are the Men You’ll Grow to Love Soon” just sticks inside your head all day long.  Once again, bass work is key to the simplistic formula here, propelling the song along when the chorus isn’t present.  Don’t even try to tell yourself that you don’t already feel yourself growing to love this band.  It seems like soon is now.

Apparently the band have an affinity for American pop acts of the past such as Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison.  Such influences definitely bleed through here, especially on songs like “My Schedule.”  There’s a certain swing you’d find in the records of your parents; you know, the ones they told you they first danced to when they were courting each other. But, the group has the knack to make it all their own, using a hint of tropicalia on “In Dreams.”  While the subject matter is definitely a nostalgic allusion, you get the precise feeling of listening to this on a beach, if not for Gonzalez’s echo-effected vocal.

A wondrous thing about In the Court of Wrestling Let’s is the fact that their is a youthful vibrance throughout, keeping the album from ever feeling stale.  “I Won’t Lie to You” has a blistering pace to it, and although it does come across a touch raw, you’ll be drawn to the purity of a band pushing themselves to have fun.  And “It’s Not Going to Happen” feels as if a bunch of British brats decided to borrow a touch or two from Ted Leo.  This is meant as flattery, sincerely.  It uses the stop-start formula, along with mono-syllabic moments repeated, sucking you in as it goes.

For a debut record, you couldn’t really ask for a whole lot more.  Not a song on will turn you off, and despite being a straight pop-rock album, you probably won’t skip a song.  Sometimes the best records are the ones that present themselves honestly, destined to bring you nothing but joy.  In the Court of Wrestling Let’s is precisely such a collection of songs, and one that  Let’s Wrestle should be extremely proud to have created.
