Say Hello to The Sweets

You won’t find much information about up and coming L.A. based band The Sweets when looking around on the internet, and apparently the band like to keep things on the mysterious side.  I do know that the band make some incredible hazy, surf, lo-fi pop music that’s perked up my ears over the last few days.  Our song sample below “Malts” is a perfect example of the band’s garage style take on mellowed out surfer music.  If you’re into it, check out more of the band’s tunes over on their bandcamp page.  Stay tuned for more information on The Sweets as it gets to us.

New Driving Rock From The Reflections

Here’s a nice little driving rock number called “Disconnected” coming your way from L.A. based outfit The Reflections.  I like the way this jam just sort of starts out rockin’ without a lot of build up to the good stuff.  You can really picture the band enjoying playing this one live as they lead back into that driving chorus several times.  It’s a fun one.

Stay tuned in 2013 for a late winter/early spring release of the band’s new album Limerence.

New Dark Electro-Pop from LESANDS

I figured I’d throw the whole world for a loop by dropping this catchy hit from LA’s LESANDS.  Honestly, I’m digging it, though I can see just the faintest hints of a dub step influence hiding in the song.  But, the construction is pretty interesting in and of itself, not to mention the faint haunting of the vocals from the background.  It’s not my typical fare, and I accept that, but I just want it to be Friday already so I can get my dance on somewhere about town.  You dig?

New Album (Free) from Daydreamer

When I first played the opening track from the new Because EP by Daydreamer, the guitar just grabbed me immediately. It’s not quite buzzsaw, not quite jangle, but somewhere in between.  And atop it all are some gently faded vocals that hover over the track, sort of like the early approach from PoBPAH, except noisier.  Right now the group is letting you download their latest EP for free, and since it’s only four real songs (2 noise blips included), you should take the time out of your day and get your hands on it.  In my mind, it’s definitely worth your time.

Introducing Youth of the Beast

I got an email the other day about this Southern California based duo Youth of the Beast and I almost wrote them off without giving them much of a chance.  Not sure what possessed me not to give them a chance, but I’m glad that I gave them a listen as I’m enjoying the tunes more and more with each listen.  The song I have for you below “Shotgun Army” is easily the most catchy and poppy tune on the band’s recent LP release Seventy Seven.  A lot of the songs have this sort of folk-pop feel about them with the strong Nick Cave like vocals from Adrian Symcox really carrying each and every song.  If you’re feeling this one, the band’s entire album is streaming over on bandcamp.

Great New Music from Francisco the Man

I first encountered Francisco the Man awhile back, but had totally forgotten about him until the great blog I Guess I’m Floating posted a track from the new single by the group from Los Angeles.  But, in checking in, I discovered he’d also posted a couple of new jams to go along with the single, one that you can only get via Soundcloud (or here).  For me, listening to this sort of reminds me of listening to Ducktails; it’s got carefully crafted pop/folk tunes, yet there’s these ambient noises coating the music, giving it this distant quality that I completely enjoy.  Just listen to these two tracks and pretend like you’re not excited by the music; I dare you.

Stream New Jam from White Arrows

Just a few weeks ago, I was really impressed by White Arrows at SXSW, so now that they’ve got a single floating about, it’s time that we share that with you.  This track is just as vibrant as I remember when I heard it live, although I think the recorded material has a bit more of an electronic touch then the live performance.  Regardless, you can’t just listen to this song once; it’s laden with hooks galore.  There’s that tribal percussive element and even a mellow little breakdown near the end of the track.  You can find this jam and a few others on the bands upcoming Fireworks of the Sea EP, and look for a full-length later in the year.

Amazing New Track from So Many Wizards

We first discussed So Many Wizards back in 2011, when the project was just getting started, but I’m happy to report the band has grown and blossomed into something spectacular.  The LA acts is slated to have an album, Warm Nothing, arrive later this year, and if it’s filled with tracks like this, then it’s going to take over the whole Internet.  For me, there’s a resemblance of what you would expect the Shins to sound like if James Mercer still kicked it old school, draping careful melodies across light instrumentation.  Come on, you can’t tell me this track doesn’t make you happy.

Warm Pop Number from Princeton

It’s been quite a bit since I heard anything about Princeton, but I’m glad the group’s back o the up and up.  They’ve got a new record titled Rememberance of Things to Come that is going to hit the streets on February 21st.  This title tracks seems a little bit more structured around a few loops, at least up until the midpoint of the track where strings and percussion pick the song up.  It’s a feathery vocal that soars throughout the song that will really grab the ears of pop music lovers.  Come on in and get taken away by this sweet little jam.

New Track from Cold Showers

I’m really excited by this new track, or rather this alternate version, from Cold Showers.  It’s going to be released in early 2012 as a single from Art Fag Recordings, along with the original versioun, which is equally as awesome; we’ll keep you posted on the exact street date.  For now, get into this song:  It has a nice bounce to it from the beginning, which will live with the song throughout, but you’ll notice that coated vocal effect favored by Mike Sniper. There’s an odd haunting mood created by the vocals and the bass, but at the same time, there’s this counterbalancing brightness provided by the other instruments.  It’s dark, it’s catchy, and it’s just flat out good. You dig?
