Last Week’s Jams (9.9 – 9.13)

Seemed like a strange week for some reason, but there were some definitely tunes that just broke my heart, in the best way possible. I continue to be impressed by Merce Lemon‘s new stuff, and “Crow” was just a beast. Porridge Radio, too, offered up a song that just wanted to shatter spirits, though if that’s the case, I won’t mind one bit. Alas, there was some pop in the week, like the new record from Young Scum and new single from Jim Nothing. Plus, old favorites the New Tigers are back, as is Germany’s Roller Derby. Indulge yourselves by pressing play below, but be sure to start with the powerhouse hit from The Wickies.

Friday Album Streams: Lunar Vacation, Kal Marks and More

Dropped the ball last week, and there were several notable releases hitting the streets, at least on my end (Dummy and Mythical Motors). Plus, there were some solid releases dropping this week we wanted to remind you of. This section just needs the streams and the links, so you can make up your own mind! Stream and buy the stuff below!

Last Week’s Jams (8.5 – 8.9)

Another week, and another weird day where I posted more than one person should, but alas, there has been a lot of really great music of late. So, below you’ve got our weekly playlist, sort of summing up where we ended last week, before we head into this new one. We had a really great Rock n’ Recipe interview with former ATX band Blood, plus some more local love for Letting Up Despite Great Faults. Covered some great new music from Naked Roommate, Wut and Lunar Vacation, then ended the week with one of my favorite acts, Constant Follower. There’s tons of music in between too, and we’ll be back again with more following these messages.

Lunar Vacation Share Tom Single

While I’ve dabbled in being a fan of Lunar Vacation, I’m totally onboard with their next record, at least from the three tunes we’ve heard, including this new single below. On the surface, it’s just a generally good pop rock number, with a chorus that has all the right elements to cast a spell over you. That said, it’s the nuanced little moments in the band’s craft that really ask you sit with the record; go to the 2:13 second mark, where the dreaminess is pulled apart for just a little more playfulness and tension building, pushing you up that pop mountain only to reach the top and shoot you joyously down the other side with a big ol’ grin upon your face. Everything Matters Everything’s Fire is out September 13th via Keeled Scales.

Last Week’s Jams (7.15 – 7.19)

For some reason, this past week felt a little slow in terms of new music coming our way, and while I say that, we still cranked out over 20 tracks for you to peruse below. I was super excited for the new track from Low’s Alan Sparhawk, the first music we’ve heard from him since the passing of his Mimi; it was a beautiful piece that shows Alan off on a grand adventure. The Reds, Pinks and Purples snuck in some special new singles, so we’re grateful Glenn got those out into the world. I was stoked on new stuff from Austin’s Marry Cherry, not to mention a new Wut tune that came our way. Kicked off this playlist with my favorite tune, Teenage Tom Petties bringing in the hooks with “Night Nurse.” So, press play and see what you missed out on last week!

Lunar Vacation Release Sick Video

The video is sick, but it’s also “Sick,” so be sure we don’t get those sentiments confused when talking about the great new Lunar Vacation track. For my meaningless two-cents, this is the band taking the modern indie rock sound and stretching it a bit beyond; I love how the vocals just feel casual, as if they’re in no rush to really deliver the hooks. The space behind Gep’s voice feels a bit more dangerous than one might expect, which bodes well for the tune (and the album) as you can gravitate towards that bit of and edge while still being swept up in the emotional power. When they briefly break it all down at the two minute mark, you’re in for a nice little 10 second treat that’ll keep you circling back for your fix (and that dreamy fade out–this song has it all). Everything Matters, Everything’s Fire is out on September 13th via Keeled Scales.

Last Week’s Jams (6.17 – 6.21)

What started off as a slow week quickly hit hard once the Softies announced their return to the scene after a few decades away. While that may have overshadowed my personal adoration, there was still plenty of cool things to jam out to, or so I thought. The Teenage Tom Petties take on a power pop version of doo-wop, while Chime School announced what seems to be the purest of jangle pop record ever to exist. We had some outsider stuff too that I was super into, like the new Robber Robber single…plus some 7 degrees of Austin made easy with new music from Blood and Lunar Vacation. And, if you need sweet pop feels, try out the new 7ebra or Emma Russack jams. All in all, some great new finds for you here, if you’ll only press play.

Lunar Vacation Announce New LP + Share Set the Stage

The musical world can sometimes be serendipitous. Just last week, I was talking with a friend from Australia who was looking for bands to tour with in the fall; they were going through Georgia, so I suggested Lunar Vacation, then myself traveled down an LV wormhole. Wake up today, brand new Lunar Vacation video on the Internet, with an announcement of a fresh LP for our friends over at Keeled Scales. This beautifully choreographed video directed by Finn Wolfhard accompanies the band’s latest single, and man, this is the sort of set-up that builds anticipation of a new record…as if they really needed an extra dose. Everything Matters, Everything’s Fire will be out September 13th.

Last Week’s Jams (2.13 – 2.17)

We’re not sure if you’re off or not for President’s Day, so we wanted to make sure those stuck in an office, or just browsing the Internet at home caught on to what we dished out last week! Ryan premiered a fresh track from Slow Fiction, plus he was able to get some SXSW coverage up via interviews with Dream, Ivory and Free Range. I was stoked to hear our friends Lola Tried return, plus I loved that new track from Ghosts on TV; the new stuff from Dry Cleaning and Lunar Vacation wasn’t bad either. Plus, there were lots of weirdo bits in between like Monde UFO and Swim Camp too! Oh, and did you see the IT Department was back on the grind with some Orbital coverage? Yep, stream away friends.

Lunar Vacation Share Only You Video

Having received great reviews with the release of Inside Every Fig is a Dead Wasp back in late 2021, Lunar Vacation have been on a bit of a high. They’ve released demos, recorded an Audiotree session, plus spun their view on some Christmas classics. But, today the band has a brand new single for you to taste, accompanied by a video shot in rural Tennessee. Once the song gets going, just beyond the 1 minute mark, you’re immediately greeted by Grace’s soothing voice over a soft percussive roll and gentle acoustic strum. It actually feels as if you’re walking side by side with the character in the video, traipsing about in those Tennessee foothills, perhaps with a little wind at your back. In the end, I got super stuck on the expansive nature; there’s this natural openness to the Atlanta group’s songwriting here that just immediately brings you on a journey. The tune is brought to you courtesy of Keeled Scales.
