Minta & the Brook Trout Share Matador

Well, I guess Mondays tend to establish their own mood, moving in slowly, trying to scratch the sleep from my eyes. Lucky I’ve got this tune from Portugal’s Minta & the Brook Trout, the first listen from the forthcoming Demolition Derby. The song’s background is made up of really steady little percussive elements as well as a nice little wash of synths; it allows for the vocals to serve as the pop element, rising like the sun over the song’s horizon and luring you inside. Feels like a foggy morning slowly moving you into the sun, so lets hope that pops up at some point today…for now I’m just immersed in the world of this song.

Jangling Post Rock from Lower

lowerShifting guitars open up this track with a bit of a jangling ring, before the brooding kicks in from Lower.  That brooding comes in via the dark croon of the vocals, with just a faint hint of a pleasant meldoy hiding at the end of each syllable.  Meanwhile, the guitars are still ringing and the drums are pounding; it creates a pretty striking effect, making all of us at ATH on alert for the release of the band’s debut album, Seek Warmer Climes; it’ll be out on June 17th via Matador.  Here’s a video for the below single: VIDEO.

Swinging Pop Ditty from The Teen Age

The-Teen-AgeI’m in serious need of a pick me up today, as I spent my sleeping time rocking to the Terry Malts.  So I’ve turned to The Teen Age, who have just been prepping the release of a new 7″ via Paper Cup Music.  I like the way the guitars are being used here, not to mention the sort of classic doo-wop sound in the vocals; it’s definitely making me nostalgic for sitting around the house rocking with my mom’s tape collection.  Anyways, just dug this track, so I figured I’d share it with you all. Here’s to the weekend.

New Music From Yo La Tengo

Don’t start going crazy over the headline of the post just yet.  It’s sort of new music from Yo La Tengo and sort of not.  The story goes that way back in March a band by the name of Condo Fucks played a surprise type show in NYC with some other bands.  Sort of unexpectedly, that band turned turned out to be just another name for now famous New Jersey indie outfit Yo La Tengo.  This new band, side project or whatever you want to call it has a new album out via Matador on March 24th entitled Fuckbook.  Not sure exactly what the idea is for the project or why the need for all the cursing, but all YLT band members are involved.  Here’s a recently posted song by the band called “Whatcha Gonna Do About It”.
