New to Me: Dag Ready Debut

dagWell, there goes the rest of my day! I just happened to stop by Bedroom Suck Records, looking to see what they’ve been up to, and lo and behold new song from Dag. Dammit if it’s not just a great little bit of a swinging pop jam. I mean, it definitely has an Aussie feel to it, but I like the added pieces in the background like the strings that work against the songs natural swinging stomp. The band have a debut album titled Benefits of Solitude coming out in February, but while we wait, can we not just celebrate the genius of this track?

Plus, you can visit the band and find some early versions of this track and some others I feel that will make their way onto the new LP.

Beautiful New Piece from Arbes

arbesWell, contrary to the date, it’s not quite Fall here in Austin, which makes this track from Arbes pretty perfect; it fits somewhere between the sunny playfulness of summer and the breezy afternoons of early Fall. I love the steadying hand the band employs, carefully moving guitar lines over rolling drums. It’s got this internal joyousness that only arrives upon repeated listens, which I highly suggest. I have a feeling that their new Psalms EP will be the perfect way to move between seasons…not to mention a wonderful way to pass any afternoon; look for its release on October 7th via Sports Day Records.

New To Me Track From At/All

At-AllSometimes you get an email about a second single and accidentally listen to the first single that was released earlier in the month and you get mad at yourself. This track from At/All is that very scenario. While I liked “Frequency”, it was the track “Deeper” that got me fully dialed in. Take a listen.

At/All are Matthew Nicholson, Pascal Babare, and Lucy Roleff. They have a lovingly awesome electro-pop sound with flourishes and harmonies. Melbourne is home to the band and Aussie electro-pop dominates. The full-length LP, SUN DOG, is out 8/29.

Premiere: Redspencer Offer New Single

redspencerMelbourne’s Redspencer won me over with their debut EP, so I’m stoked that they’re getting ready to release a proper full-length. They’ve been kind enough to share with us this new single, which takes on the guitar-pop of their early work, but elevates it to the next level. The hooks are still present, and coolly float out, but I think there’s some bits of Blur‘s casualness in the way the lyrics are delivered. So, take some mid 90s Brit pop, add in some textural elements from Aussie guitar pop, and you have this gem of a tune. You’ll find this tune on the group’s debut LP, Perks, which is being released by the uber reliable Deaf Ambitions.

Nice Pop Tune From Mirror Test

Mirror Test_Washed Up_cover imageMany of you may remember us talking about Melbourne based band Wilding several times over the last few years. Well Justin from the band recentlyalerted me to some new music he’s making under the moniker Mirror Test with several otherfriends in Melbourne based bands. As a preview of this new start up, the band shared with me this new single entitled “Washed Up”. One can clearly hear the brit pop influences here with gleaming guitars and hushed vocals. It’s bright, jangly, and perfect for your morning sunshine.

Justin has told me the band hopes to get their act together soon and release a proper EP. Stay tuned.

Stream Ciggie Witch’s Classic Connection

classicconnectionIn the midst of gearing up for another Ocean Party album, a few members had time to sit down with other friends (somemembers of Totally Mild) and record the latest album from Ciggie Witch.Classic Connection is their first new work since 2014, and it’s pretty much an all encompassing of the guitar sounds of Melbourne; it’s casual and catchy, filled with pop sensibility that’s ultimately undeniable for any listener. Lost and Lonesome is handling the release, and I hope a few copies make it to my side of the pond. Enjoy your morning.

Danceable Pop from Teeth & Tongue

teethandtongueJust got word that Melbourne’s not just all about guitar rock, though I think we already knew that. Teeth & Tongue, the project of Jess Cornelius, are the latest export, signing with Captured Tracks in the US to release the next album, Give Up On Your Health. The first single we’ve heard is an energetic hit; it’s also catchy as all get out. It sort of reminds me of something Blondie would be doing if they had come of age in the current landscape. Look for this to take the US by storm when it’s released this September.

Bright Pop From Chook Race

unnamedMan it seems like Trouble in Mind Records continues to find bands none of us have heard of and expose their music to the world. Melbourne based groupChookRace is yet another one of those groups discovered by the label. When describing this new find, I’m reminded of some killer brit pop bands like POBPAH or even fellow Australians Twerps. As many of you know our love for both of those bands, you can understand why I’m sharing this poppy and bright new song from the band entitled “Sometimes”.

Pick up new album Around the House via Trouble in Mind Records on September 2nd.

Meet Melbourne’s Pure Moods

PURE_MOODS-BHow quickly the Melbourne music makes its way over to our side of the pond, just like this Pure Moods track that’s blowing up rather quickly. There’s an interesting dynamic to the song, with the chiming guitars taking on more of a dream pop sensation while the vocals have that relaxed attitude that’s been popularized in the city over the past several years. As of now, the band’s in their early stage, just tossing this catchy piece in your ears while they head back into the studio to finish up work on their debut album for Deaf Ambitions.

Wayward Pop from Hideous Town

hideoustownsAnother day, another great Aussie band…this time it’s Hideous Towns. The band is prepping their debut album, but in the meantime they’ve tossed up a couple of tracks to lead you into their sound. It’s a drifting feeling, filled with reverb, yet filled with a wonderful pop sensibility. I get this dark feeling of longing, but one of those where you’re happily dreaming of somewhere peaceful. It’s almost Friday, and I wish I was there already, so I wanted to offer up this track first today, get you looking forward to what’s next. This track is availableon a 7″ from Lost and Lonesome.
