Cool Sounds Have More to Enjoy

It hasn’t taken long for Cool Sounds to follow up their excellent Cactus Country with another new LP, More to Enjoy. Today, we’re super glad to share the title track from the new LP, offering up this textural blend between psychedelia and tropicalia; it’s an intoxicating mixture of pop sensation you won’t want to miss. The band almost opens up with this classic rock vibe, harkening back to a late 60s groove, but then begin to weird it up as they build in a nice rhythmic underbelly. You’ll find the vocals have this natural wistfulness, they’re bright and melodic, but also seem to be out there searching…though ultimately finding there’s “nowhere to go.” The new LP will be out this Fall via Osborne Again and Meritorio Records.

Killer New Track From Wilding

Having been damn near 5 years since we last heard from our Melbourne friend Wilding, I was quite excited to receive some new music from him a few days ago. His latest effort, “Speed King of the Commonwealth” is more of a loud, indie rock pop song worthy of dancing and head banging. It reminds me of early singles from Kaiser Chiefs with it’s chant inducing “la la las” and breezy guitar sound. This song is out now on all formats via Half Cow Records.

Only the beginning, Wilding is currently hard at work on his third album entitled The Death of Foley’s Mall coming sometime later this year.

Indie Pop From Tight Knit

We in the ATH crew love our indie pop and we get excited when someone sends us something new from the genre. Today I’m pleased to share this new single “Too Hot” from Melbourne based all girl group Tight Knit. This one is a sort of mellow take on the genre made complete with crunchy guitars and a simple drum beat. The band just put out this single via 7″ vinyl on Not Unloved out of Glasgow. Chilled Pop from Way Dynamic

I love the simplicity of Melbourne’s Way Dynamic, especially on the latest single. It’s a pretty easy formula in my eyes, offering up light guitar strumming, minimal percussion and some warbling electronics for spiritual support. Of course, if the vocals weren’t so musically attractive it could all fall to pieces, though luckily that’s not the case, with the perfect care given to the melodies. It’s the best way to start out your Monday, drifting into this wintry mix outside my window. The band have a new EP titled What’s It All For Now, which will be released on November 16th via Our Golden Friend.

Explorative Pop from Cyanide Thornton

I can always count on Bedroom Suck Records to keep me in the know when it comes to the Aussie music scene (among other labels of course). What I’ve grown to appreciate about the label, and come to think of it, most of the Australian labels is that they don’t seem too intent on always operating with the same musical styles. Take this brand new Cyanide Thornton tune that they just released; it spends almost two minutes exploring various sonic textures, building you a world where its safe for the lyrics to come into play. Once Sienna enters the fray, she controls the listener with ups and down in pitch, smoothed out notes follow. Musically, the landscape of the track has these folk motifs, but the latter half has the faintest hint of post-punk laying in wait. The self-titled album will drop on November 9th.

Elizabeth Shares Singles Club Tune

Having released the most excellent Her with her band Totally Mild earlier this year, it’s great to hear Elizabeth going it on her own…as she’s rumored to be doing in the near future. The song below will appear on a new Split Singles Club single alongside much-hyped Stella Donnelly (deservedly so). I love the personal feel of this tune; it’s like you’ve been invited inside Elizabeth’s home to hear her try out some new tunes. Her voice is as powerful as ever, and I think American audiences will likely find some Sharon Van Etten or AngelO references to boot. It’s never too late to subscribe; go HERE.

The Shifters Announce New LP on Trouble in Mind

What!? Another band from Melbourne, Australia that rules? This time the band is The Shifters, and they’ve just announced they’ll be releasing their debut LP via Trouble in Mind Records. Our first listen has this rad bouncing rhythm line with matching guitar cuts jangling to keep the pace; it strangely grips you and never lets go. The subject matter, and accompanying video, seem to be taking a knock on a very ordinary life…which is weird because I’m working now, and then going to the gym…are these guys mocking me!? Doesn’t matter, the song is precisely what’s made the group a hot item; they release Have a Cunning Plan on September 21st.

Missed This Crepes Tune

The Melbourne scene continues to prove to be one of the more diverse, and prolific, music scenes across the globe…and rising act Crepes dropped a tune from their latest album that I completely missed. Their first single from Channel Four was an energetic number titled “Sexyland,” but they pull back on the rhythm here and let this gem just flow. Lyrics are delivered in the most casual manner, with the bass line the most prominent musical element in the mix…yet you’ll hear synth lines sparkling in the far off. You might also hear a brief nod to Phoenix in the vocal twist during the chorus…but that could just be us. Channel Four is being handled by Deaf Ambitions and Spunk, and is about to hit the streets!

Put Girlatones on Your Radar

In what continues as my undying love for all things from Melbourne, Australia, I’m here to ask you to take a look at another hot act from the city, Girlatones. They’ll entertain you with infectious dueling harmonies from male and female vocalists, but there’s enough attitude kicking here to make sure you don’t get carried away think their a simple pop band. I particularly love how they employ the slightest hint of Western swing in their ringing guitars, while the rhythm section helps the group keep the perfect pacing. This is the title track from the group’s new effort, Fitting In Well, and it seems just, as the group will surely be fitting into my heavy rotation of great Aussie acts in 2017.

Easy Rock From Post-Lovers

Post-Lovers is the Athens, Greece based project of Eleni Karageorgou. She’s got a new track out called “Melbourne,” which is part of her debut 7″. The song exposes some of what Karageorgou has in store for you– intimate indie rock in a minimalist setting. There’s a lovely level of sincerity and ease with this track and its jangly guitars and warm vocals, but I’m also digging the moments when the song picks up a bit as well.
