Touch of Pop from Tam Vantage

tomThose of you in the know of the Aussie pop scene might be aware of Tam Vantage; he’s previously worked in Pop Singles and ATH darlings The Stevens.  But, he’s got a new project working under his namesake, and it’s delectable pop bliss for pretty much every listener.  I like the slight bit of inflection that’s in his voice, fitting perfectly into the light-hearted approach to his guitar work.  I swear, there’s something going on in that Melbourne water; I’m in love with everything that city produces. For now, there’s just this grand single, but I’ll keep you on the up and up with more announcements as they come our way.

Pronto

prontoPronto is a Melbourne based band who just dropped a new album this month full of powerful punk tunes laden with some pop tendencies.  To get a taste of the band’s music, check out this sweet new single called “Red Flag”.  As soon as you hit play, you’ll know what’s in store for you hear so I will save my words.  Kick ass.

New album, When You’re Gone, is out now on Off the Hip Records.

New Music from Bored Nothing

boredA few years back, a friend of mine posted this great list of rising acts out of Australia; it included acts like Pop Singles, Royal Headache and more, but one of the ones I really gravitated towards was that of Bored Nothing.  I’ll admit that part of it was the style of recording, but another part of my enjoyment was the resemblance to a world where emo music met Elliott Smith, with just a splash of bedroom stylings.   Still, if you’re in touch with what’s going on today in the Aussie scene, then you can definitely hear where the music of Bored Nothing fits in. Give a listen to this brand new track to see if it’s up your alley.

Freak Out With King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard

1016643_636813432998230_291135536_nFor those looking to sample some quality psych rock freak out music, look no further than this new Melbourne band King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard.  After you’ve fully digested the band’s incredible name, go ahead and check out this tasty track below called “30 Past 7”.  I could of course see the band slotting in nicely on our local Psych Fest bill with such a trip inducing, entrancing track.  It’s a jam.

The band are said to be releasing a new album sometime in September on Remote Control Records.

Sunny Pop Music From Jackson Scott

1950As I scour the internet for some new tunes to share, this new song “Sandy” by young upstart Jackson Scott has perked up my ears.  You’ll immediately notice a very sunny, airy, and bright feel to the song that could land it on a future summer playlist by yours truly.  If nothing else, it should be able to turn that frown upside down for a couple minutes.

New album Melbourne is due out July 23rd on Fat Possum Records.

Australian Swagger from UV Race

11It’s a shame that Melbourne, Australia is so far away, otherwise it would be the first place on my vacation list.  Seems like every band I adore, or every band writing great hits hails from the city, or somewhere nearby.  The latest great jam comes from perennial rockers, UV Race.  On this new single, which comes from the group’s Queens of Punk 7″, they bring a chilled out vibe that features male and female vocal parts.  That alone would hook me, but I like the relaxed feel too, making it the perfect tune as we float into the summer. Oh, and the band will be making their way to Austin, as well as the rest of the US, starting this week.

You’re Going to Love Ascetic

883945_544088232279916_962009203_oI’m stuck on this new release from Ascetic, another gem from Melbourne.  But, that being said, this is further proof that all things Oceania don’t have roots in Flying Nun…not that I don’t like those roots.  This is a band intent on using the broadest strokes to create an expansive rock record, dark at times, yet stunningly beautiful in every aspect.  Listening to their new effort, Self Initiation, I just keep finding myself lost in the musical landscape, taking turns, or unfolding to a further degree.  Definitely worthy of multiple spins on repeat, just to wrap your head around the sound itself.

New Twee Goodness From Free Time

1827

Melbourne is quickly growing into the new Brooklyn as a hot bed for up and coming indie bands with solid tunes.  The sound is obviously a more twee influence when compared to the punk or experimental side of Brooklyn, but you get what I mean.  This new song “Nothing But Nice” comes our way from the recently formed group Free Time.  It’s eerily similar to ATH approved, and fellow Aussies, Twerps.  You know we can dig that.

Free Time have a self-titled release coming your way in the states on May 28th via Underwater Peoples.

Lo-Fi Pop from Jackson Scott

tumblr_inline_mhpmrvFGQc1qz4rgpDon’t you love it when there’s a shroud of mystery swirling around a musician and his work? Sure, it adds intrigue, but it also seems like the artists is making a statement like “hey, you don’t need to know me, just listen to my music.”  In the case of Jackson Scott I’m completely okay with that attitude, especially considering the songs are so ridiculously good.  There’s definitely a creepy vibe going on in these lo-fi pop jams, but I can’t help but find myself completely sucked in to the songwriting. He’s currently giving away his album, Melbourne, right now, so go HERE and get lost in his world.

The Sugargliders – A Nest With a View: 1990-1994

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Writing about a compilation is no easy task, especially when the output of said band, The Sugargliders in this case, was so limited, especially to ears on American soil.  Luckily for us, the hardworking folks over at Matinee Recordings have just released A Nest With a View, a collection of the Melbourne group’s singles and their one LP from 1990-1994.  If you’re looking to get your hands on a classic indie pop record that sounds just as relevant today as it did when it originally was released, then this is precisely the album for you.

“Ahprahran” begins our re-introduction to The Sugargliders, basically the project of the young Meadows brothers.  What struck me on this first track is how much I can see this being a vital part of any indie pop collection in the present day.  String arrangements accentuate the incredible melody, and the fact that the guitar sounds like it’s being carefully picked rather than sung only thrills me more.  It’s not the only standout track, in fact, most of these tracks hold up well on their own, but my current favorite is “Letter from a Lifeboat.”  There’s this minimal percussive element, and the guitar is carefully picked from the opening minute, almost like a classical guitar player.  Then the Meadows brothers combine their vocals to craft this fluid harmony that continues to fascinate me the more I play it.

But, for all my love of the aforementioned tracks, there’s plenty within the confines of A Nest With a View to capture your ears. I like how “Sway” opens with this wayward harmonica, crafting a melancholy time that’s reinforced by the lyrical content of a person moving on from their loved one.  You also have to appreciate the earnestness of the songwriting in “Police Me,” a song that reaches its climax when the lyric of “it’s true” is shouted amidst the intricate guitar playing of the group.  Of course, I’m always a sucker for added instrumentation like horns and strings, such as those little flourishes you find on the collections final track, “Top 40 Sculpture.”

I know that not everyone has the same fascination I do with brilliant indie pop music, but I’m glad that modern technology allows us to go back in time and expose the heart and soul of the movement.  I’m always amazed at the work accomplished by bands like The Sugargliders long ago, and although it’s nearly two decades from their time, it still sounds every bit as relevant in today’s genre.  A Nest With a View is an exquisite snapshot of a band that left us with a brief career, but one that, as evidenced here, surely stands the test of time.  You can only say that about the greatest of tunes.
