Bright Pop From Chook Race

unnamedMan it seems like Trouble in Mind Records continues to find bands none of us have heard of and expose their music to the world. Melbourne based groupChookRace is yet another one of those groups discovered by the label. When describing this new find, I’m reminded of some killer brit pop bands like POBPAH or even fellow Australians Twerps. As many of you know our love for both of those bands, you can understand why I’m sharing this poppy and bright new song from the band entitled “Sometimes”.

Pick up new album Around the House via Trouble in Mind Records on September 2nd.

Meet Melbourne’s Pure Moods

PURE_MOODS-BHow quickly the Melbourne music makes its way over to our side of the pond, just like this Pure Moods track that’s blowing up rather quickly. There’s an interesting dynamic to the song, with the chiming guitars taking on more of a dream pop sensation while the vocals have that relaxed attitude that’s been popularized in the city over the past several years. As of now, the band’s in their early stage, just tossing this catchy piece in your ears while they head back into the studio to finish up work on their debut album for Deaf Ambitions.

Wayward Pop from Hideous Town

hideoustownsAnother day, another great Aussie band…this time it’s Hideous Towns. The band is prepping their debut album, but in the meantime they’ve tossed up a couple of tracks to lead you into their sound. It’s a drifting feeling, filled with reverb, yet filled with a wonderful pop sensibility. I get this dark feeling of longing, but one of those where you’re happily dreaming of somewhere peaceful. It’s almost Friday, and I wish I was there already, so I wanted to offer up this track first today, get you looking forward to what’s next. This track is availableon a 7″ from Lost and Lonesome.

More Dreamy Pop from Cool Sounds

coolsoundListening to this song all morning, and I can’t believe that the name Cool Sounds hasn’t already been chosen by someone. That being said, I think it’s a pretty easy way to get into the group; it’s a simple explanation of the band’s pop construction. On their latest single, you’ll hear a deepened dream-state just tinged slightly with some jangling guitar work. While I initially think there was some horn catching my ear, the only thing I ended up focusing on was the calming effect of the vocals. It’s good to see a pop band taking on some different vibes. This new single is stand-alone for the moment, but promises to be included on the group’s forthcoming LP for Deaf Ambitions.

Crepes Take On Old Tones with New Single

crepesYou’d think it would be easy to throw Crepes in the mix with the rest of the Melbourne acts, but like all great music scenes, they’re probably far more vibrant and varying than the coverage…which is why I like Crepes. They seem to take on a spin of an older style of pop music, looking back at some of the early psychedelic acts that were taking pop construction into newer directions. I love the feeling that the vocals are just falling from the heavens, dripping into the track itself. This is our first taste of new music from the act, but you should also travel back in time to listen to their Cold Summers EP.

Good Morning Following the Australian Path

gmFeel like someday I should just up and move to Australia; I seem to be far too in love with the sounds of the country, particularly those around Melbourne. Which, it just so happens, is where Good Morning hail from. The band is the newest hot commodity, receiving praise from all sorts of media, and some guy named Tyler the Creator. Guitars have that little twinkling twang and the vocals seems to take on that lackadaisical warmth I adore. If this is your first taste of the group, look for more on their Glory EP slated for a release in February.

Sorry I Missed This: New Video From Good Morning

11893967_1594501650814963_6830838395350050836_oWhat seems like a long while ago now, I introduced you to the sleepy lo-fi of Melbourne’s Good Morning. It’s been a few months, and it seems that the band has a new music video that they premiered over at The Guardian last week. While I’m sorry to have missed bringing you that video last week, I’m pleased to be able to share with you the silly video today, which features a great tune as well. “Time To Try (Again)” has this band again showing why they should be on your to watch list; the jangly guitars, soft vocals, and subtle percussion all combine to make for a good Wednesday jam.

Is America Ready for No Zu?

nozuI’m not quite sure a lot of people Stateside have heard of No Zu…unless they picked up the Cut Copy compilation Oceans Apart from awhile back.  But, the groove on this track from the Melbourne artists will surely perk up some ears here.  First, there’s that throbbing pulse, yet you can also hear the influence of so many other areas like big band to 80s pop music.  It’s an interesting pastiche, and one that should come across as rather refreshing in a genre that can often grow stale.  You can grab this new single from the band’s new label, Chapter Music, or wait for their next LP on the label early next year; it’s titled Afterlife.

Throwback Rocker From Gold Class

1436552349AxS1_cjzsZi0FSmGzHo7_wrMG_4PBJezllKZdzMc_zpsbcyznyihMelbourne based Gold Class has been picking up lots of positive praise recently online and I figured we should be talking about this promising band as well.  Below you can find the groups latest single entitled “Furlong”.  Expect some throwback style, sluggish and heavy styles here for fans of all things old school.  Call me a fan.

You can pick up It’s You on September 4th via Felte.

ATH Records to Work with The Ocean Party

oceanpartyUp until now, I’ve stuck mostly close to home for releasing records via ATH Records, and I’ve been really proud of that.  But, every once in a while, you have to step outside your comfort box and do something big.  So, I’ve decided to work with Spunk Records and the Aussie outfit, The Ocean Party.  They’ve already got a couple of great releases to their name, which we’ve covered on our site, so I’m really happy to be part of this new effort, Light Weight. The album will be out in October, but for now, you can grab a download of their excellent first single below.

Check HERE for updates and other ATH Records releases like Rose Sélavy/Templo X and the Lochness Mobsters (both out this week).
