A Night Out In Austin (2/5)

Mozes & The FirstbornIt was a busy Wednesday night. We had some solid locals kicking off bills that featured some far travelling acts we have loved and some we wanted to see if they were the real deal. We straddled our two most frequents haunts, The Mohawk and Red7, despite the bone drying cold. I met Nate downtown, brought one camera, one lens. Instead of a normal show review, I am going to do the share few thoughts and plenty of pics thing.

Bands featured: Hundred Visions, Mozes & The Firstborn, The Sour Notes, Yuck and together PANGEA

Tickets $18 from Mohawk

When you talk about the legend that is Superchunk, you can’t just talk about the influence they’ve made musically, but also the influence they’ve had on modern indie rock music.  Mac and Laura founded Merge Records (one of our favorite labels) as a way to put out their own songs, and that of their peers.  It seems only fitting that these taste makers would team up with another up-and-coming act, Waxahatchee, to organize an incredible show for Austinites.  While the old school act has a bit of a pop-grunge sound, the young bucks are going to bring you a more noisy version of folk tunes.  Seems like the perfect way to spend a Thursday night.

If you paid any attention to our year end list from 2013, you probably noticed that Cate Le Bon was on there for her wonderful, Mug Museum.  It’s actually one of those albums that grew on me more, even after I raved about it.  Plus, when she comes into town, she’ll be coming with Kevin Morby of Woods/Babies, who just released a pretty solid record of his own right at the end of 2013.  Both musicians will surely draw a large crowd, but don’t overlook local openers Love Inks, who’ve clearly done just fine with their own recent release, Generation Club.  It’s a great bill from start to finish, so be sure to show up early and join in the fun.

Tickets $8 from Mohawk

One of the hottest bands over the last few months, including our site and beyond, has been Swearin. They’ve got this classic alternative sound with distorted guitars and lackadaisical vocal delivery, which often uses male/female interplay.  They’re just just as likely to blast your ears as they are to offer you soft little melodies.  Their album Surfing Strange is something that’s definitely worth your time, much as the openers are.  You’ll get two great local acts in the Midgetmen and Super Thief to open up your evening. It’s going to be a busy week for rock n’ roll in Austin, so if you haven’t started catching live shows, this is as good a place as any.

Those of you in need of a great show to take a friend to have got to hit up the Friday night extravaganza at Mohawk.  You’ll be treated to one of Austin’s most consistent groups, The Octopus Project, who continue to exhilarate audiences in the live setting.  Plus, you’ll get a chance to see one of the bands that I’m expecting huge things from in 2014, Tele Novella. They’ve got the songs to back up that hype, at least if you’ve heard the band’s recent work over on their bandcamp page. Then, you’ll also get treated to Borrisokane, which guarantees you a night filled with blissful pop and smiles to go around. If this incredible weather holds up, you better find yourself here…or else!

Nightlands

Date Tuesday, December 3rd
Location Mohawk
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $8 from Mohawk

Winter weather unfortunately puts a damper on bands traveling into Austin to put their music on display, but there’s a few great acts coming in, like Nightlands blowing into town on Tuesday night. The group is still pushing the sounds off their most recent release, Oak Island, which was well-received across the board.  I’ve always appreciated the way the project incorporates these organic sounds into these dreamscapes that mesmerize listeners.  And if that wasn’t enough, locals Holy Wave and RF Shannon will be supporting on the night.  It’s cheap, it’ll be good, you’ve got no choice: be there.

Show Review: Crystal Antlers @ the Mohawk (10.19)

Crystal_Antlers-4Sometimes Austin can disappoint you.  I don’t know if it’s the post-ACL hangover or the onset of cold weather, but I was expecting a sold out crowd for Crystal Antlers on Saturday night, especially after the release of their excellent Nothing is Real LP. Sadly, it was half-empty (shame on us), but that didn’t stop the bands on stage from killing it. Read on for some reflection. And thanks to our friend Bryan for the photo!  Read more
