Tons of great acts are playing in town on Saturday night, but here’s where we have our eyes set.  Mynabirds sweep into town fresh off the release of their sophomore record, Generals; it’s been called enchanting, but most of all, it’s been called good. Personally, I’m stoked to see Deep Time, a band that really deserves some Austin love, seeing as they’re from our hometown.  They just put out their latest, Deep Time, on Hardly Art, and it grows on my the more I listen to it.  But, be sure to get there early because another great Austin act, My Jerusalem will be opening the night up.  And I’ll be honest, if you live in Austin and aren’t at a show on Saturday night, give yourself an F. Unless you have kids. Then a D since I gave you at least a day’s notice to get a sitter.

Do you have a plans on Friday? No? Good. We have Glass Candy with Chromatics heading to town to play The Mohawk.

Sharp-eyed readers with a memory may recognize Glass Candy from an IT Dept. post and fans of the internet buzz will know Chromatics for their recent cover of Neil Young‘s “Into The Black”, a song in heavy rotation at Sirius XMU.

The bands had the good sense to ask ATH-local-to-watch band Orthy to open up. Flying Turns will sling vinyl to keep you dancing.

Show Review: Bass Drum of Death @ The Mohawk (7/10)

I like the new Red7. I really do. But there are only so many purple pics I can edit before going cross-eyed. For this show, I was back at the friendly confines of The Mohawk where all are welcome. Ahh, green, red, blue and plain ole off-white – The openers, La Migra, even decided to do an uplit by light bulb thing. I cranked up the ISO and had a whisky, pinky-raised.

Bass Drum of Death with DZ Deathrays in support, nary a bass guitar in sight for the latter two-thirds of the evening’s program. Plenty of familiar faces braved the crap weather and gave the Indoors arena a human temperature level.

More words and pics, of course, that way. ->

Date Tuesday, July 10th
Location Mohawk
Doors 900p
Tickets $8 from Frontgate

If you’re looking for a show that’s going to rock your socks off then you better get out to the Mohawk on Tuesday night.  One of my favorite acts, Bass Drum of Death, is heading into town with a whole bunch of new tunes to bring the house down; they’re loud and energetic and everything in between. They’ll be joined by their friends DZ Deathrays who’ve been touring all over the country with the band, bringing the rock n’ roll to us all.  If you’re looking for a show that’s destined to be memorable, then meet us at the Mohawk on Tuesday.

Show Preview: Yacht @ Mohawk (6/8)

Date Friday, June 8th
Location Mohawk
Doors 800 pm
Tickets $12 at the Door

The weather has cooled off a bit, so a full on dance party seems like a bit of fun, right? Well, Yacht always bring a solid amount of danceable pop, so it looks like Mohawk is definitely the place to be for the Friday night.  I’m also going to suggest that you all go and check out Onuinu, who I wrote about a little while back–dude’s make bedroom pop from Portland, so you gotta support his differentiation.  Love Inks will kick everything off, so grab your friends, a few pre-game beverages and go have a blast over at Mohawk.

Up and comers The Couch are a band we feel everyone should really be paying attention to right now in Austin.  They’re a great band with loads of talent, not to mention a great new single “Kaiser” that’s creating all kinds of buzz in town.  Joining the group are fellow talented locals The Sour Notes and relatively unknown Summer Swells.  If anyone has a link for SS, holler.

Show Pics: Chaos in Tejas – Ted Leo (5/31)

Chaos in Tejas is that thing when you get ready for a show by not showering.

It is also that thing where randomly selected indie-punk-pop acts get thrown on stage in between hardcore and punk bands. In this case, The Mohawk featured Nathan’s man-crush, Ted Leo, had a set between Japanese thrash by Reality Crisis and old-school punk from The Mob.

To further confuse my ears, I stopped in for a bit of Big Freedia‘s set at Club DeVille.

Great New Track from The Couch

We’re really excited for our friends in The Couch here in Austin, working diligently on their sophomore album, just after the release of 2011’s Old & Touchin Blue.  They’ve added Sara Houser to the mix, giving the band a bit of a new dynamic–meaning they’ve added an incredible female vocalist to the mix.  I this track, one of the two new singles, they give us a bit of a heavy stomp, allowing Sara to lay her sultry voice atop it all.  You can hear this single and others when the band hits up the Mohawk next week, June 5th.  Really excited for these guys (and girls!).

Show Preview: Ty Segall/White Fence @ the Mohawk (5/25)

Date Friday, May 25th
Location Mohawk
Doors 800 pm
Tickets $10 from Transmission

Tons of great shows on Friday night, but the one you’ll find me hitting up is Ty Segall and White Fence over at the Mohawk.  Ty’s got to be one of the busiest people in the business, releasing his latest album, Hair, with White Fence just this past month, then turning around to release another as the Ty Segall Band in just a bit.  Garage rock and glory are all his.  It’ll be interesting to see if Tim from White Fence plays a solo set, or if he’s just going to rock with Ty the whole night, or if they’ll trade back and forth.  You can also catch some great acts opening the night up, with Rayon Beach and Useless Eaters kicking things off the right way.  It’s going to be a rock n’ roll fueled night, but this is your friendly reminder to not talk at the show, please.
