Admittedly, I’m a sideline Courtney Barnett fan. The tunes are good, and I enjoyed The Double EP, but these two nights were definitely meant for my ladyfriend, who many might call a super-fan. So, for the two nights we shared together with Courtney Barnett, I just sat back and watched her enjoyment, while taking in the whole situation of one of indie rock’s fastest rising stars taking over Austin.

Been helping a friend put together a show this week over at Mohawk on Thursday night, and in doing so, I encountered a new band, Twin Bitches that’s really exciting. Based on their two singles, the band has sort of that post-punk Constantines feeling to them, using jagged guitar chops to push forth the lyrics, which come across somewhere between a throaty growl and a gentle croon. Musically, you can see similarities to other indie acts, but combined, it sounds like something wholly different. They’ll be playing with two of our favorite local acts, SLOW and Jonly Bonly…so come out, grab a drink, jam out and enjoy some of the finer rock n’ roll tunes in town. Doors are at 9, but you can always come hang out early.

With SXSW this year there was lots of hubbub about fewer bands and less corporate entities flooding the streets, but despite all that, I still managed to have myself a good old time. I’ve got some thoughts and awards to hand out, and these are strictly my experience, as we tried at ATH to split up and cover as much as we possibly could. Friday night was jam packed with album releases and rad locals, so Saturday night slows down a wee bit, though there are still several shows worthy of catching your attention. There’s actually a lot going on on Friday, but I’m going to highlight the places you should probably end up…then I’ll take a quick look at Saturday’s events too. Catchy name game, am I right? There are two really incredible shows on Tuesday night, and frankly, they’re on completely opposite ends of the spectrum. That being said, I suggest you follow in our footsteps and hit up both. Those looking to indulge their pop sweet tooth need to hit up Zola Jesus and Deradoordian at Mohawk. ZJ is coming into town rocking her new album TAIGA; I’m hoping she touches a lot on her last LP, Conatus quite a bit. You can get tickets for $16 HERE; doors are at 6:30 PM.
But, on the other end of the spectrum is the phenomenal line-up at Hotel Vegas. The Dead Space are the spotlight, and they’re record Faker might just be one of the best records to come out of ATX in some time. Still, you can catch other heavy hitters Ghetto Ghouls and Beth Israel if you’re up to it. I think you’re best served by hitting up both shows. Doors at Vegas open at 9 PM.

It’s a really good weekend for shows, and it’s good to see the scene heating back up after the Winter seasonings. Friday night is sure to be the highlight of the weekend, but look to some other rad shows you can attend about town. I know a lot of you are recovering from a long weekend at Fun Fun Fun Fest, but maybe the rest of you are interested in having a great night out with the cold weather creeping in. The perfect band to enjoy that weather is Scottish act We Were Promised Jetpacks, who we’ve really enjoyed watching grow over their last few albums; we even managed an interview a few years back at Fun Fest. Also, long time ATH faves Twilight Sad will bring their gloomy post-pop to the stage on the same evening, which makes the bill even more enticing to our ears. Both bands have new albums to celebrate as well. Tickets are $16 bucks, and the doors open at 6:30 PM, so come early and hang with B.Gray and I on our Manniversary.
