With SXSW this year there was lots of hubbub about fewer bands and less corporate entities flooding the streets, but despite all that, I still managed to have myself a good old time.  I’ve got some thoughts and awards to hand out, and these are strictly my experience, as we tried at ATH to split up and cover as much as we possibly could.  You can read on, if you’ve got the time, to see what I had to say. Read more
Friday night was jam packed with album releases and rad locals, so Saturday night slows down a wee bit, though there are still several shows worthy of catching your attention.  It’s supposed to be cold, so bundle up, grab a friend and head out on the town…here’s my personal highlights of the weekend, including their meaningless genre guesses. Read more
I’ve already tossed a nod towards Knifight playing over at Cheer Up Charlies tonight, but there’s definitely some other shows that should pop up on your local Austin show radar.  There’s actually a lot going on on Friday, but I’m going to highlight the places you should probably end up…then I’ll take a quick look at Saturday’s events too.  These are just one man’s recommendations. Read more
Catchy name game, am I right? There are two really incredible shows on Tuesday night, and frankly, they’re on completely opposite ends of the spectrum. Â That being said, I suggest you follow in our footsteps and hit up both. Those looking to indulge their pop sweet tooth need to hit up Zola Jesus and Deradoordian at Mohawk. Â ZJ is coming into town rocking her new album TAIGA; I’m hoping she touches a lot on her last LP, Conatus quite a bit. Â You can get tickets for $16 HERE; doors are at 6:30 PM.
But, on the other end of the spectrum is the phenomenal line-up at Hotel Vegas. Â The Dead Space are the spotlight, and they’re record Faker might just be one of the best records to come out of ATX in some time. Still, you can catch other heavy hitters Ghetto Ghouls and Beth Israel if you’re up to it. Â I think you’re best served by hitting up both shows. Doors at Vegas open at 9 PM.

It’s a really good weekend for shows, and it’s good to see the scene heating back up after the Winter seasonings. Friday night is sure to be the highlight of the weekend, but look to some other rad shows you can attend about town. I know a lot of you are recovering from a long weekend at Fun Fun Fun Fest, but maybe the rest of you are interested in having a great night out with the cold weather creeping in. Â The perfect band to enjoy that weather is Scottish act We Were Promised Jetpacks, who we’ve really enjoyed watching grow over their last few albums; we even managed an interview a few years back at Fun Fest. Â Also, long time ATH faves Twilight Sad will bring their gloomy post-pop to the stage on the same evening, which makes the bill even more enticing to our ears. Both bands have new albums to celebrate as well. Tickets are $16 bucks, and the doors open at 6:30 PM, so come early and hang with B.Gray and I on our Manniversary.

Alright folks…I know it’s Halloween week, so everyone is looking for things to do, and shows to attend where costumes are accepted. Â Tonight, Monday, you’ve got one option, plus another show that should be on your radar. Â Hotel Vegas has a mellow show on the bill, which might be in contrast to what you’ve know from the venue, but don’t miss some of these acts, namely RF Shannon and Plantation; Plantation is the project of Carlton, who is also part of our boys Grape St. But, if you’re inclined to show off that costume you’ve been working on, you should head over to the Goblin-A-Go-Go at Mohawk this evening. That event is free and starts at 8 PM, featuring A Giant Dog, pumpkin carving, and contests and drawing galore.

Ok, of Montreal‘s a pretty impressive band that puts on notoriously killer live shows. Oh, you’ve somehow never seen the weirdness that is Kevin Barnes & company in the live setting? Well, there’s a link just above where you can change that problem for under twenty bucks. If you’re like me and you’re always down for something a little funky, or if October’s got you feeling spooky, head over to the Mohawk and check out the psychedelic and flamboyantly twisted rock from this legendary band. Openers are Pillar Point, who sound like they’ll be a display of electronic delight to loosen up those dancing shoes.
