Jenn Ghetto’s S Signs to Hardly Art

sIt should come as no surprise that Jenn Ghetto’s S project has landed on Hardly Art Records.  After all, it’s the same label that re-issued some of the work of her earlier band, Carissa’s Wierd, thus she keeps things in the family, which is always good.  Her new work, which began as a bedroom project, four albums ago, has blossomed into a really powerful pop outfit, not too far off from the likes of Tegan and Sara.  Her album Cool Choices is due on the label on September 23rd, so don’t be surprised if it wins you over.

Show Preview: Pity Sex and Solids @ Holy Mountain (Tonight)

holyRarely do you get to start off your week with such a bad ass show, but I’m really excited for tonight’s gig over at Holy Mountain.  You’ve got a couple of solid openers in Costumes and Gang Sign, but there’s also one of the most overlooked bands of the year jamming strong, Solids.  Their album Blame Confusion is this boisterous bombast, and I highly encourage you to get out now and get yourself a copy of it. Then the night gets closed out by Michigan’s Pity Sex, who offer up a shoe gaze-y version of rock n’ roll; they’ve got the ability to go loud, or pull back with a little bit more melody. This is the perfect way to kick-start your week, and lose a little hearing.

AMENDMENT: Pity Sex have had to cancel their slot due to traveling issues. So now Solids will headline!

Bright Pop from Sw/mm/ng

swimmingSummery spirit is in full swing around here, and this track from Sw/mm/ng is the perfect way to keep that mood going.  But, while there’s definitely a light-hearted tone to this new single, the band takes on a stronger emotional strategy, similar to the work that the Walkmen completed.  Part of that attitude comes in the rhythmic pounding, while the rest is completed by the careful drawl that’s present in the vocals.  If you’re enjoying this (and you should) then pick up the band’s new album, Feel Not Bad, on August 29th when it’s released by Old Flame Records.

ATX Saturday Night Spotlight

Austin, I love you.As mentioned yesterday, there’s tons of things about town this weekend, so you should definitely consider yourself lucky.  Sure, there’s no pun-off this weekend, and old Emos has long removed their troth, but plenty of other great places in town will take care of you.   Hit up one of these shows, and enjoy your weekend. Don’t drink and drive. Or bike. That seems dangerous too.  Read more

Pleased to Meet You: Niagra

niagraApparently I’m not as up on my avant pop music in the Italian scene as I used to be, as I’m pretty impressed by Turin’s Niagra. The duo construct these rather interesting pop pieces that, from what I’ve heard, compile all sorts of electronic elements (beats, loops, samples) to serve as the background for their varying approaches to pop songwriting.  Here, the vocals have this soft touch, which works in direct contrast to the pulsating music they’ve used.  This fall they’ll be releasing their album, Don’t Take It Personally, on Metronome Records on September 8th; it definitely won’t be your run-of-the-mill electronic pop record.

Rock Out with Dribble

dribbleChecking in on my favorite country of Australia, I stumbled upon this excellent new tune from Dribble.  It starts out innocently enough before blasting forth with a discordant bounce and riotous vocals.  There’s a spirit within the song that can only be fully realized when surrounded by a bunch of friends in a tiny little club.  Still, the track packs a huge punch, which is perhaps owed to Mikey Young of Total Control/Eddy Current, who recorded the band’s new 7″.  It’ll be out shortly via Cool Death Records.

Another Track from The Pharmacy

Pharmacy-blog-534x380I’m really expecting this new album from The Pharmacy to catch a lot of ears, especially considering that I felt their first album, Stoned and Alone, was vastly underrated.  This brand new single has a slower pace to it, which illustrates the band’s growth since their first release.  The guitars are taking their time, weaving a world of country-tinged chords that allow for the vocals to really take in all the focus.  If you’re a fan of Natural Child, then Spells will definitely be something to look forward to; it’s being released by Old Flame Records on August 12th.

Fresh Tune from Zola Jesus

zolaWhen I saw that a new Zola Jesus track was floating around the net, this was not at all what I was expecting, though I’m not saying I hate it.  Her first few efforts were filled with this ethereal pop, often focusing more on the emotional side of the songs than anything else.  But, this new track immediately shows she’s got something new up her sleeve; her voice still has it’s gentle tone, but the electronic beat is wholly unexpected. Sure, there were electronic touches fleshing out the sound early on, but this pushes the artist purely into the direction of straight electronic pop.  You know what. I like it, and if you do, look for Taiga to be released on October 7th.

New Music from Destruction Unit

dunitThis great new Destruction Unit tune is featured as one of the many singles from the Adult Swim Singles series, and while there’s been some hits, this is definitely my favorite.  I just love the wall of noise the band constructs in practically every song, especially when various pieces of the group pick up the pace mid track…drumming and guitar in this case.  You can look for other great singles coming from the series, with Diarrhea Planet and Speedy Ortiz already schedule for the next couple of weeks.  Salud.
