New Punk Rock from Autistic Youth

autisticyouth-1281927164We started this week with a lot of softer tracks, so I feel like we should offer you the flip side of the coin with the newest tune from Autistic Youth.  The band have been fairly quiet lately, but they’re readying a new LP for Dirtnap Records titled Nonage.  The album wears their influences on its sleeve with a punishing combination of hardcore, not to mention a softer touch you’d find in old skate video games by employing gang vocals to encourage maximum crowd participation at shows.  You can pick up the album next week from the label; it should be in stores shortly after.

FFF Preview: Television

Those of us who adored punk rock have been salivating about this show every since FFF announced that they’d be bringing back Television to their yearly festival. I don’t know how they do it, but they always bring a band out of the woodwork that deserves some acclaim for all their accomplishments.  Television is one such band; they were part of the punk scene in the 70s, and though they branched out a bit into their own realm, they definitely helped define the sound, especially with some of the groups that wanted to expand beyond the short fury of CBGBs. I might speak for myself, as opposed to the whole ATH crew, but this is the absolute top of my list for the upcoming festival.  Ever so often we get to witness a group reemerge that defined who we were as children or teenagers, and I know my record collection owes a great deal to the work the band did.  If you’re going to catch one band this weekend, this is my MUST see.

I’ll leave you with the most cliche hit the band have, off of Marquee Moon, and hopefully you hear the brilliance that made them so endearing to us all.

Catchy Tune from The Sea Life

seaMondays are always difficult for everyone, trying to climb out of bed and head back to the daily grind.  Sometimes you need a nice little pick me up, and I hope that this tune from The Sea Life helps you out in that arena.  The band’s been changing around the line-up a bit, and they claim that that has influenced their sound a bit; whatever they say, it’s good to my ears.  It’s got this throbbing hook, but in an indie pop realm, as opposed to some sort of electronic induced push and pull. Definitely a group who’ve caught my attention today. Enjoy.

Austin Show Preview: Grape St. @ Hotel Vegas (11/2)

Grape St.I’m feeling local this weekend, and though there are a couple of interesting traveling tours coming into town (Those Darlins/The Blow), I really think your best bet is to end up at Hotel Vegas on Saturday night. Some of our favorite bands will be playing that evening; these are bands we’ve supported in some fashion since we started this site. You’ll get to catch Booher, which is the new project from former Zykos member, M. Booher.  Plus, you’ll get Frank Smith, who’ve put out tons of great songs, all of which we’ve enjoyed.  Headlining the night will be another band we clearly support, as we helped the band put out their self-titled LP: Grape St.  They’ve only gotten better over the last year, and you should expect a full house to bring things to a riotous evening. And, it’s going to be cheap, so why not hit up a great local show?!

New Single from The Ocean Party

oceanpartyI’ve definitely been on an Australian bent lately, and I want to continue that with our friends in The Ocean Party.  They’ve just released their new record, Split, and I’m pretty sure that anyone that listens to the single below will find as much reason to love them as we do.  There’s a relaxed vibe to the vocal, which is often the case with the group, but the guitar sound should sound familiar to all, as it’s got a bright angular sound that’s being utilized around the globe.  If you’re with me, then you’ll be all about this beautiful song and the rest that are on the album.

Radioactivity – s/t

1185631_205042416336958_2061587917_nRating: ★★★½☆

While the Marked Men might be on some sort of hiatus due to the busy schedules of everyone involved, Radioactivity at least gives us a glimpse at the glory of old, with half the band represented on the band’s eponymous debut.  The project is filled with leftover tracks from Jeff Burke’s project, The Novice, and he called in good pal Mark Ryan to flesh things out, leaving us with a blistering record of punk rock hits.

“Sickness” opens with that stuttering guitar line that’s pretty prominent in the work of all those involved with Radioactivity, though there’s a soloing guitar line that seems to knife its way through the track.  The vocals push the boundary of raspiness that you get from classic punk rock, though for all intents and purposes, the group’s still leans a little bit towards the pop side of things.  You’ll get that image perfectly on the following two tracks, “Other Life” and “World of Pleasure.”  The latter is definitely one of the record’s standout tracks, pounding furiously in your ears, despite having a catchy delivery of the lyrics throughout.

And you get what you expected on the first half of the record, with the blistering pace of the tunes allowing for the band to demonstrate their songwriting capabilities, while still honing their pop sensibility; this is one of the things I’ve loved about Marked Men and all associated bands. Tracks like “Alright” are perfect for driving, partying or even running; they fit in every corner of your life.  But, what has impressed me about Radioactivity is that there’s a glimpse of what’s to come with the band’s next LP (rumored to be on its way in 2014) near the latter half of the album.

For example, “Alone” has this huge ringing guitar line, with the bass slowly working its way into the fold.  It opens up the space quite a bit, adding just the slightest differentiation to the band’s signature sound.  If you listen carefully, you can hear the guitars working against each other, almost fighting to define the band’s sound.  There’s also the power ballad that lurks at the end of the record via “Trusted You.”  The drums seem to want to escape into a heavier realm, though their steadiness really provides a good backbone for the rest of the song, which remains sort of a heartfelt ode to a lost friend or lover.  It’s actually great on its own, but it’s made even better for the fact that its fittingly unique in the grand scheme of the LP.

I’m a huge fan of the group, even if the songs sometimes seem to blend together after repeated listens.  And that’s the thing with Radioactivity, you’re going to get repeated listens. The songs are too good to ignore, and too catchy to dismiss.  It’s clear that the duo of Ryan and Burke still have tons of tricks up their sleeves to keep me coming back to buying their records.

New Music from Horrible Houses

horriblehouses5.143644I do not know much about Daniel Johnsson other than he’s the man behind the music of Horrible Houses.  Really, I don’t need much other than that, as this new single from his up-coming release is so remarkable that I’d be remiss if I didn’t share it with you as soon as possible. It’s got this frolicking folk feel to it, though blended through a bit of a lo-fi edge.  There’s even this really quiet touch at the back end of the song near the 3 minute mark where you’re just listening to a man and his intricate guitar work while the vocals slowly work their way in.  This is in my top songs of the year, today. You can grab his new release Family Tapes Vol. 3 in December from Happenin Records.

New Track from Bitch Prefect

bitchThe last time I heard from Bitch Prefect was over a year ago, so I’m glad to have them back on my radar.  The band has been working on a new LP, the follow up to Big Time.  I like the fact that listening to the group often reminds me that somewhere in my mind the bastard sun of the Television Personalities and Calvin Johnson truly does exist.  It’s a slow treading song, though a slight pick up does ring out from the guitar near the end of the track.  I figured someone should give these guys some love, so here I am, supporting rad tunes.

Show Preview: Desaparecidos @ Mohawk (10/30)

desap

Date Wednesday, October 30th
Location Mohawk
Doors 6:30
Tickets $25 from Mohawk

I don’t understand why this show hasn’t sold out yet, so be warned, you better grab the last remaining tickets as soon as you can.  Desaparecidos rose to prominence long ago, as singer Conor Oberst star also began to rise nationally.  But, as soon as they rose, they disappeared, much like their name would imply…many of their fans were never able to catch the act live.  Now’s your chance, and if you needed more convincing, just check out the openers.  I’ve not got too much info on Purple, but I’ve loved everything that’s come our way from The So-So Glos. They’ve won over fans on their brief stops through town, and they’ll definitely be an important part of what I can only expect is an incredible evening.  Cheers to Transmission for bringing them all to Austin.
