New Twang from Moondoggies

moondoggiesoggIt seems like forever ago that we first heard from Moondoggies, and after the release of their debut, they’ve been sort of quiet.  But, things are changing, as the group is readying Adios I’m a Ghost for Hardly Art.  It’s definitely a swirling Americana influenced song, with guitars wrapping around the vocals almost from the get-go.  There’s even a bit of a stomp, accentuated by a soloing guitar at the end of the track, highlighting the spirit and tenacity of the band.  If you’re digging what you hear, you can grab the record at your local store when it hits on August 13th.

Mellow Jam from Camera Obscura

cameraobscura11Man, I can’t tell you how long I’ve waited to hear more from Camera Obscura.  Their last two albums have long haunted my playlist, always leaving a special place in my heart.  Today they released the second single from their upcoming album, Desire Lines, which will be released by 4AD on June 4th.  Listening to this track, I love the relaxed quality of the tune, taking its time for Tracyanne to win us all over with her vocals.  It’s a simple tune in construction, aside from some soloing guitar work near the latter half of the song, but it’s perfect in execution, guaranteeing that we’ll love the new record.

New Danceable Jam from Minks

MINKS-Tides-End-COVER--720x719The growing catalog of Captured Tracks has several bands that wear the flag for everyone, but there are some forgotten gems that I don’t think people really give enough attention to, such as Minks.  The last effort from the project, By the Hedge, was a special listen, though I don’t recall too many people taking notice.  With the upcoming effort, Tides End, I’m hoping that things are about to change.  It’s the purest form of bedroom pop, with an underbelly of danceability that will surely attach itself to listeners.  Be prepared for another under-appreciated record on August 6th.

Girl Pop from Big Wave

a1599649102_2In the wake up Rilo Kiley and Standard Fare passing into the abyss of great bands, I’ve been looking for something to perfectly fill my need for girl-fronted pop rock.  This latest single from Big Wave has me excited for what positive things are sure to come in the future from the group.  While there may be some dark subject matter, you wouldn’t be able to tell by the emotional pull of the music, giving off a powerful boost of energy.  This new single is, as usual, brought to you by the great folks over at Art is Hard Records.

Steel Phantoms Kicks Out the Indie Jams

steelphantomsI’m thoroughly impressed by the work of the duo, Steel Phantoms.  When I first heard this track, I thought the group might approach the sound of Dodos, but they totally turned it up a notch, adding a more raucous element with the pounding of the drum section.  Sure, they mellow out momentarily in parts, but the whole of the track is much more forceful.  The band has a new self-titled EP that’s heading your way on July 16th, and it’s figuring to have a heavy spot in your summertime rotation, combining sprawling indie rock with energetic anthems.

Bouncing Pop from English Singles

slr191I picked up this English Singles 7″ from the record store last night, so I had to share it with you all, that way you could do the same.  It’s precisely what I expected from the group, filled with catchy hooks and sing-a-long lyrics.  Just listen to that pounding drum beat; try to listen and not find yourself bobbing up and down. There’s three jams from the Sacramento act on the Ordinary Girls 7″, which I’m telling you is a must for your collection.  You can pick it up from Slumberland Records immediately!

Careful Pop from We Are Loud Whispers

weareloudTomorrow we’ll all get a chance to get our hands on the newest release from Hardly Art, We Are Loud Whispers.  The project of the duo, spread across Tokyo and Seattle was done via Internet, but don’t start to think that it will resemble that other mail service group.  Sure, there are some electronic touches throughout the record, Suchness, but this new single demonstrates just how careful the two are at crafting their songs.  This tune almost seems to quiet, but the underbelly of pop consistently rears its head, making the perfect listen for a quiet Monday afternoon.

Nice New Tune from Wampire

WampireJust a bit ago I caught Wampire opening up for Foxygen and Unknown Mortal Orchestra; I said it then, and I’ll say it again: Wampire were the best band that night. They have this combination of California sun-pop with a bit of R&B swagger…even throwing in some alternative rock jamming moments.  They’re definitely one of those bands who I’ve been waiting to hear more from, which is a good thing since their debut Curiosity is coming out in two weeks from Polyvinyl Records.  It’s shaping up to be a pretty perfect record for summertime party jams.

New Jam from the Sea Pinks

seapinksLast year’s Freak Waves was one of my top albums of the year; it was such a joy that I still listen to it on a regular weekly basis.  Well, Sea Pinks are back with a brand new single for your ears, and this one will hopefully promise more great songs to come! The guitar still jangles, but it’s not as prominent this round; I feel as if the tonal quality of the guitar itself is actually a bit darker.  Of course, the lyrics are perfect, with a chorus you can sing to yourself while you’re jamming on the highway.  Support the band and go check out their BANDCAMP where you can grab their previous works and this single!

Another New GRMLN Track

grmlnIt seems like every couple of weeks we get a new tune from GRMLN, and I’m totally cool with that, especially when they’re as hook-laden as the following song we’ve got for your listening pleasure. We’re nearing the June 4th release date of Empire, the debut LP from the group, and I’m getting excited.  Some part of me feels like there’s a Foutnains of Wayne ode in here, just propping up a solid rock tune with a powerful chorus.  It’s actually sort of a rarity nowadays, so I’ll gladly take a revisiting of one of my favorite genres.
