Welcome Back Kids on a Crime Spree

kidsWhere have these guys been?  It’s been almost two years since we last heard from Kids on a Crime Spree, and I’m ecstatic that the band is back today.  Their sound compiles elements of hazy guitar pop with bouncing rhythms and floating vocals, all of which guarantee a hit over at the ATH offices…and hopefully beyond.  The group has a brand new Creeps the Creep 7″ that comes your way next week courtesy of the most excellent, Slumberland Records.  Hopefully this great tunes is just a hint at great things to come from the group in 2013.

Quiet Track from White Woods

White Woods Big Talking Corner Town 7"I first discovered the work of White Woods when The Coathangers announced that their singer Julia would be doing a little side project.  I loved the first 7″ that came out, and this new one is even more beautiful, demonstrating how far she can step away from her garage rock mainstay.  It’s such a peaceful track, with Julia’s voice carefully laid atop the quiet instrumentation.  If you’re familiar with her main project, you’ll be amazed at such a stark contrast.  The new 7″ is up for pre-order now from Suicide Squeeze Records.

Mellow Tune from Flower Orgy

FlowerOrgy_Press2_webFlower Orgy wasn’t a band that was on my radar until I heard this new track they released to preview their upcoming 7″.  My first listen really reminds me of that intimate quality that Conor Oberst had as a bright-eyed young kid.  There’s light brushes of piano playing behind a quietly strummed guitar.  This is definitely a song that I can see myself listening to for some time, which makes me excited to meet the work of Nate Luce and Flower Orgy. The new 7″ will be available on May 14th.

New Single from The Curious Mystery

One of the main reasons I love K Records is the way they’ve consistently approached the music industry; the other thing I appreciate are artists like The Curious Mystery.  The group is releasing their Be Still 7″ on the label on January 22nd, and I’m adoring this first taste of the upcoming release. As the song rolls along, the vocals from Shana Cleveland really start to weave their way into your heart.  Everything about this track is perfect, from the harmony that runs throughout to those previously mentioned vocals.  Definitely something we all need to be on the lookout for!

New Hit from September Girls

I love writing about the bands on Matinee Recordings; it makes it so easy as they almost never miss.  The newest installation to their storied stable is Dublin’s September Girls, a five piece group specializing in bringing a blend of atmospheric post rock and girl group harmonies.  It’s pretty much a perfect blend of all your favorite things, uniting noisier pop with your tendency to wax nostalgic about a more pure rock n’ roll sound.  You better get your hands on it now, as the history of the band shows that there music is being gobbled up quickly all over the globe, so chances are this 7″ EP won’t be around for too long.

New Soulful Jam from Shannon and the Clams

One of the great things about hitting up the record store on new release day is stumbling upon tunes you weren’t expecting, like this new tune from Shannon and the Clams.  The band’s been sort of quiet, but that’s probably because Shannon’s been touring with Hunx.  However, the group is back with a few new 7″ records, and this one comes out from Volar Records (I picked it up last night). Shannon has a voice that sounds like the heir apparent to Janis Joplin, and I mean that in a flattering sense, as very few people can combine the raspy and the soulful and pull it off; this young lady can definitely do it.

New Tunes from Twerps

If you remember last year, then you remember Twerps, especially if you followed our site closely.  They had a runner-up best of year song on our year-end list, and their self-titled album also made the cut.  News hit yesterday about a new 7″ from the Australian bunch coming your way September 17th via Chapter Music.  This tune’s a lot more upbeat than what you might have gotten from the group in the past, and Marty seems to be having a bit of fun with his vocal performance.  In my opinion, this band can’t do a single thing wrong with their music, and I’m sure you’ll feel the same after jamming this track.

New Indie Pop from The Spook School

Let’s be honest, I’m a sucker from good indie pop.  While browsing through the immense catalogue of Cloudberry Records, I came across this offering from the label’s The Spook School.  It’s not a surprise to me that the band is based in Edinburgh, but it surprises me that more people don’t adamantly swoon over music like this.  The song starts off with a bit of a jangling guitar, but as it moves along, there’s more of a bright discordant guitar that jabs in and out.  It doesn’t hurt that the chorus uses male/female vocals in unison (love it).  If you’re in the mood visit the CR site and pre-order this new 7″ from The SS.

New Single from The June Brides

For those of you who missed Phil Wilson’s last record, God Bless Jim Kennedy, you can happily sink your teeth into his return under the June Brides moniker.  The group’s just released a new 7″ with Slumberland Records.  As always, his voice sounds quieted, seemingly taking the background to the song’s inner harmony, fleshed out with string arrangements.  Personally, I love how there’s a bit of a stomp just before the 1 minute mark.  This is definitely a happy return, and one I hope you’ll consider looking into; you can pick the A January Moon 7″ up at your local record shop.

New Music from Seatraffic

Lately I’ve begun to think of San Francisco as the mecca of psychedelic tunes and new age punk rock sounds, but that’s not all the city has to offer.  One listen to Seatraffic and you’ll see that even dreamy bedroom pop has it’s place on the West Coast, and we’re grateful you can craft music like this anywhere.  The duo has kindly let us share the B-Side to their upcoming 7″, and we’re pretty sure you’ll dig the stripped down emotional effect that remains central to the song.  You’ll be able to order your own copy of the recording on August 1st if you know what’s good for ya.
