Catchy New Tune from Math and Physics Club

mathandphysicsI’ve already brought you one great tune from Matinee Recordings this week, and as promised, the label has more great music to share with you all. The latest song comes via Math and Physics Club; it’s easiest one of the catchiest tracks the band has composed to date.  The song opens with some drum work accompanied by hand-claps, just before the rest of the act joins in with infectious guitar lines.  Personally, aside from the clapping, I’m really finding myself attached to the lyrical delivery on this tune.  You’ll be wise to order the Long Drag 7″ straight from Matinee Recordings, and browse while you’re there…you’ll find tons of hits to order from one of our favorite labels.

Indie Pop Winner from Bubblegum Lemonade

matinee087It’s been sort of a sad few months for indie pop fans, with a few of the smaller labels calling it quits.  But, on the bright side of things, the next few weeks promise a few announcements from the always excellent Matinee Recordings. The first release on their list is the brand new Have You Seen Faith 7″ from Bubblegum Lemonade.  Laz has fleshed out his line-up, creating three beautiful songs that illustrate the purity of indie pop.  His voice, as always, has this beautiful warmth, and the guitar work rings perfectly in the background.  You can order the new 7″ now from the Matinee Store.

New Pop from Warm Soda

Warm-SodaIf you haven’t seen us raving about Warm Soda, then you probably haven’t been following our site for too long.  Their album released earlier this year was full of delicious power pop that continues to show up on all of our playlists.  But, the band has turned around instantly with the Tell Me In a Whisper 7″.  The A-side isn’t as furious as previous work, but it definitely exemplifies the group’s habit for constructing perfect melodies around their guitar chords.  Soft or not, this is such a sweet jam that it only convinces me this band won’t do anything wrong.   Keep writing the hits boys!

Spanking New Tune from Nude Beach

nude_beach_kurtJust a short bit ago I praised the debut album from New York’s Nude Beach; it ended up making our list of top albums for 2012. Luckily for us all, we didn’t have to wait long before new tunes came our way; they have a brand new 7″ coming out for Other Music Recording. Again, the group is channeling the history of American rock n’ roll, but doing it with even more grit and balls than some of their predecessors.  This tune definitely has the hooks to keep you interested, and the songwriting to show these boys are a force to be reckoned with going forth.

Sprawling Noise from Tape Deck Mountain

tapedeckmountainThis newish 7″ from Tape Deck Mountain is really solid.  It opens with this huge wall of noise that blares right in your face; you think it’s just going to be a big loud rocker from the get-go.  But, they pull back just a tiny bit, revealing a quiet pop tendency, which is briefly interrupted by a wash of noisy atmospherics from time to time.  Those moments begin to unfold more often, accentuated by machine gun snare hits, as the song drifts towards its end.  Always down to hear something new from this group; they never seem to let me down.

Bouncy Indie Pop from StarTropics

stThose of you following the indie pop world with a keen eye know that one of the best little labels is Manic Pop Records from Minnesota.  The label is quickly making a name for itself by releasing gem after gem.  One of their upcoming releases is this new 7″ from Chicago’s StarTropics.  I can’t get this tune out of my head right now.  At the beginning, I thought it had this Drums affectation, just basing that off the rhythm section, but it then begins to explore a more gentle sonic realm.  You can pick up the By My Side/Tempest 7″ on May 22nd.

Ballsy Rocker from Speedy Ortiz

3ue5_IMG1780_1I feel like Friday is going to be really loud in my head, so I may as well find some music to accompany it, right?  Nothing seems more fitting than this new track from Speedy Ortiz, the Massachusetts quartet of creative noise-rockers.  Opening guitar lines and cool vocals fall in line with traditional indie rock, but during the chorus they unleash a wall of noise and discord, not unlike many peers currently making name with a loud approach.  On April 30th Inflated Records will release a 7″ single, which will feature this tune “Ka-Prow” as the A-side.

Welcome Back Kids on a Crime Spree

kidsWhere have these guys been?  It’s been almost two years since we last heard from Kids on a Crime Spree, and I’m ecstatic that the band is back today.  Their sound compiles elements of hazy guitar pop with bouncing rhythms and floating vocals, all of which guarantee a hit over at the ATH offices…and hopefully beyond.  The group has a brand new Creeps the Creep 7″ that comes your way next week courtesy of the most excellent, Slumberland Records.  Hopefully this great tunes is just a hint at great things to come from the group in 2013.

Quiet Track from White Woods

White Woods Big Talking Corner Town 7"I first discovered the work of White Woods when The Coathangers announced that their singer Julia would be doing a little side project.  I loved the first 7″ that came out, and this new one is even more beautiful, demonstrating how far she can step away from her garage rock mainstay.  It’s such a peaceful track, with Julia’s voice carefully laid atop the quiet instrumentation.  If you’re familiar with her main project, you’ll be amazed at such a stark contrast.  The new 7″ is up for pre-order now from Suicide Squeeze Records.

Mellow Tune from Flower Orgy

FlowerOrgy_Press2_webFlower Orgy wasn’t a band that was on my radar until I heard this new track they released to preview their upcoming 7″.  My first listen really reminds me of that intimate quality that Conor Oberst had as a bright-eyed young kid.  There’s light brushes of piano playing behind a quietly strummed guitar.  This is definitely a song that I can see myself listening to for some time, which makes me excited to meet the work of Nate Luce and Flower Orgy. The new 7″ will be available on May 14th.
