The Exbats Share Like It Like I Do Video

It looks like 2023 is the year of really kick ass family bands; we had Big Blood‘s stellar record and now the Exbats have announced their newest LP for Goner Records. Inez Mclain and her father Kenny definitely have a penchant for looking back to the past for their sound, but I think Inez’s performance is so strong that it’s really hard to imagine her rocking out anywhere other than where we find her. That soulful voice is accompanied by some oohs and ahhs, but with the stomping beat and snapping guitar lines you can certainly feel a modern rock ethos. A fun tune to kick off your Friday! Song Machine is out on October 13th.

Playful Pop from the Cowboys

As of late there’s been a shitload of posturing about what’s cool and who’s cool in the scene or whatever you call it, but when you hear this track from the Cowboys you’re reminded that pop music supersedes all that bullshit; it’s about joy and frivolity, which is exactly what you get here. A stomping keyboard line sets up a ska nod (just me) that gives the track this insane bounce that will likely let you jump around the room joyously. Then you hit that chorus where the band turns the garage pop tendencies into a pure doo-wop swoon you’ll keep spinning on repeat. If you remember that rock n’ roll is fun and you can afford to take your life less seriously, then grab The Sultan of Squat, on August 25th via Feel It Records.

Video Age Share Away from the Castle

It’s really hard to put my feelings into words when listening to this new track from Video Age. The song’s not really doing anything crazy different from acts like Real Estate or the like, but something in the way the production and execution are done is supremely gratifying. It all starts with that steady snappy percussive piece; it propels the track forward, allowing the guitars to hit some really crisp notes. Those notes jangle and churn, seemingly dancing around the deliciously dreamy vocals…that actually remind me of early Teenage Fanclub (weird that I wrote about the Teenies earlier today!). Jam the title track from the band’s forthcoming Away from the Castle, out October 27th via Winspear.

Faith Healer Share I’m a Dog, Prep New LP

With a handful of releases under their belt as a duo, Faith Healer opened up the doors to some like-minded friends, creating a record that feels as organic and natural as it does creative and fresh. The first single from the group’s forthcoming The Hand That Fits the Glove is filled with self-loathing, as Jessica Jalbert chronicles how her Catholic upbringing left her feeling “like an unruly dog or some kind of trapped animal.” Still, the track has this natural buoyancy to it, whether that’s the marching rhythm of the snare drum or the dreamy swirls in the musical lollipop that run amok in the background. Jalbert’s steadied voice has this brilliant pull to it, like the guiding light in the midst of everything the group and their new players have put down…even that jamming boogie that pops in mid-track. If you’re looking for growth and pop spirituality, grab the new LP from Mint Records; it drops on October 13.

Enjoying the New Alexei Shishkin

As much as we wish we could cover it all, you’re bound to miss a thing here or there, which is why I wanted to be sure you checked in on the latest release from Alexei Shishkin. Despite Shishkin’s known allegiance to the Doug Martsch songwriting academy, I really think he’s stretched himself into some territory that puts him nearer towards the likes of Jeffrey Lewis or Calvin Johnson, especially if you take the single below as an example. It’s got this DIY aesthetic that you’ll pick up on immediately, but the wordplay and wit has this subtle charm that should keep you coming back to Goodbye Sunrise.

Spearmint Announce This Candle Is For You

As I look through the overwhelming amount of great tunes coming out this Friday, I’m really excited that there’s a fresh Spearmint album coming to us soon! Soft brushes across the snare set a jolly beat, something that’ll make you lightly tap your toes as the chilled melody blows through your bedroom. But, as someone who relishes beautiful musical moments, in whatever fashion, tie into the 1:48 mark; there’s the slightest tonal change, creating this striking yearning moment that completely floored me as the song strode into its back half. Just a really pleasant way to step into this weekend; you’ll be able to grab This Candle Is For You on October 20th courtesy of WIAIWYA.

Curling Share Patience Single

Curling is a band that seems hard to define with simple genre tags like shoegaze or even post-emo. While these lads certainly have some of those elements in their sound, they also can hit you with some heavy crescendos, loud guitars, and what I might consider classic rock at times. This new single “Patience” seems to embody this vibe incredible well and I suggest you check it out below.

“Patience” is part of a new Curling album entitled No Guitar due out August 11th. Pre-orders are live now.

Pachyman Announces Switched-On

Honestly, I’m a super-avid Pachyman fan. I was super stoked to hear that he’d be making his way to Austin for Levitation, and now I’m equally stoked to hear that he’s got a new record coming out this year. The LA instrumentalist definitely lets his Latin roots shine in his work, and yet there’s something in his style that makes it feel more than an homage…its an intangible something that makes it feel like part of the lifeblood of the modern Latin music. Plus, he’s still flirting with his love of Jamaican dub, but making it entirely his own sound, and I’m going to keep jamming this tune all day long. Switched On is out via ATO on September 29th.

Lost Film Announce Keep It Together

I’ve been jamming to Lost Film for a long while now, but Jimmy’s mostly been quiet the last few years, save for the odd single here and there. I reckon he’s been working on the Relief Map label side a bit. But, none of that matters one bit as Lost Film is back with its first new full length in about 4 years! Those of you who’ve followed the project will notice the jangling guitar lines, twisting and turning around Jimmy’s voice, though they do seem a bit more patient here, moving the sound more towards a more modern bit of guitar pop. There are some snappy drum bits and emphatic vocal turns to tether the project to its origins, but absolutely nothing is wrong with a bit of growth! Keep It Together is out on September 15th.

Seattle based outfit Advertisement blew up onto the scene back in 2020 with the release of their stellar debut LP American Advertisement. Since then, only a few singles have dropped while the band toured extensively and prepped for a follow up to the debut. Well now your wait is over as the group just announced their sophomore effort Escorts with the release of this new single “Victory.” You’ll find a pure form of rock n roll that seems somewhat lost in the current landscape but is certainly welcome and fresh for this listener.
