John Andrews & the Yawns Announce Cookbook

If you’re lucky, the frost has started to peel back wherever you are, allowing little buds of green to sprout up here and there. If that’s the case, then you’re luckier there’s a new John Andrews & the Yawns album for you. Our first listen is that perfect Spring blossom feel, or maybe you prefer that early Sunday morning breakfast at your favorite spot; it’s spritely and freeing, while still maintaining this central seriousness. Textured details from piano and woodwinds thicken up the melodies in Andrews’ tune, leaving you feeling lighter, almost floating on the notes as the breeze through your speakers. The tune appears on the new album Cookbook, dropping on May 14th via Woodsist.

Paul Bergmann Announces The Other Side

Paul Bergmann‘s one of those artists that seems to reinvent himself with every recording, though they all straddle the same folk troubadour territory. This week he announced The Other Side, the latest LP in his collection, and our first listen has my attention. Musically, it’s dramatic and sweeping, but, what I found interesting is the way the vocals are crafted here; they’re naturally deep, but they seem to hide behind the mix, begging listeners to really invest their time in deciphering each note. Faint hints of Beirut are in here, but I feel as if Paul’s taken it somewhere a little murkier, playing in the shadows of folk and chamber pop. Should make for an interesting listen; The Other Side drops on April 2nd.

Death of Pop Share Go Back Single

We’re about a month away from the release of a new Death of Pop LP, so why not spin that latest single from the James brothers. The band employs these little details that some reason seem to elevate their work above many of their peers, like the steady lite buzz in this tune, like you’re listening to one of your parent’s old records. In a sense, it’s like the dreamier bedroom pop version of Arab Strap, with a larger focus on melody and drenching the listener in electronic pop melodies that criss and cross. It’s like an old school feel, that’s refreshingly current with its dreamy notes. Seconds will be released by Hidden Bay Records and Discos de Kirlian on March 19th.

Freedom Fry Share Corde Sensible Single

LA duo Freedom Fry are preparing the release of their newest record, their first entirely done in French. With that chance definitely comes a shift in focus, with the band drawing on some classic pop sounds from the French scene. The craft of the beats and the bounce of the piano lines has some early Air vibes; they get a big boost from the driving beat too, which guarantees a dose of energy to spin your around. In the vocals you get that dreamy touch that never seems to grow old. I’ll keep you posted with more on the album, but for now, just enjoy a nice kick in the rear to start your day.

PACKS Share Hangman

One of the hottest labels last year, at least in consistency was Fire Talk Records, and they’re back this year with a new LP from PACKS on the horizon. The first single from the Toronto outfit is a fairly stripped down affair, at least in the front of the mix. Songwriter Madeline Link spent much of last year holed up and penning tracks, many about the loss of freedoms so many of us face during this on-going pandemic; that informs the attitude with this quieted intimacy, though the arrangements behind her add buoyancy to the song, filling out the space behind her voice with these distorted textures. We’ll have more on the new LP when the time comes!

Model Village Announce World of Carp

We hadn’t heard from Cambridge outfit Model Village since their 2015 LP, Healing Centre, but it looks as if the band are back at it, with another record up their sleeves. Lily Rose has taken over vocal duties for the entirety of this forthcoming release, and her present is more than known in the performance below; it’s the tour de force that seemingly creates the movement of this track, looping back and forth as those jagged guitar riffs aim to keep pace. Nice little backing tracks build in some textured melody, weaving in playful guitar licks and bouncing monosyllables as the group gallop to a close. Another fun tune that should force you to keep an eye out for the release of World of Carp, out on March 5th.

Hadda Be Announce Another Life

If you’re looking for a little bit of dreamy pop combined with sprinkles of 90s rock, then boy have I got the band for you today: Hadda Be! They’re the newest act on powerhouse label Last Night from Glasgow, and I can’t get over this jam. It’s got just a hint of swagger that nods at punk, but these arena rock feels that make it sound huge; you feel like you’re surrounded by hoards of fans clamoring to hear those huge riffs billow through the speaker stacks. Some rock just feels timeless, feels like it could bridge any genre, any emotion; this tune is one such track, and thus should be the highlight of your listening experience today. Look for Another Life to drop on April 30th.

Rachel Love Releases Primrose Hill Video

You might remember Rachel Love when all of us were clamoring to get our hands on one of the few copies of her band Dolly Mixture‘s remastered works a few years ago. Now, Rachel’s out on her own, and she’s offering up this really powerful pop ditty. It’s the sort of pop that borders on the edges of classic doo-wop and chamber pop; it’s the super hard not to get swept up in those string arrangements and light vocal flourishes (which feature her son David btw!). I have a feeling this song will be playing over here for the rest of the day! Look for Primrose Hill to drop later this summer via Cow Chow Records.

American Culture Announce For My Animals

It’s got to be tough to sit on an album for a minute, but in the case of American Culture, it led to a more finished product for their latest LP, For My Animals. The record was made pre-pandemic, but they chose to sit on it…leading to a path of creativity with the final product; it will feature screen printed covers, hand stamped labels, plus comes with buttons and a mini riso poster. It’s an art piece, not just your average record. Will you dig the music? Well, below you can sample the first single from the record. Each time I listen through I hear a bit of something new. At times, I thought I heard the howl of Iggy, all the way down to the tonal similarities (think “I Wanna Be Your Dog”), but there are some elements that felt like they were bringing in the Boss circa Born in the USA; then they added in some jangles and dreamy guitar lines, leaving you with this collection of indie rock twists and turns that are sure to entice. For My Animals is out on HHBTM on March 19th.

Balmorhea Return with The Wind LP

Austin outfit Balmorhea have been mostly quiet since 2018, with various members of the band working on other projects. But, that time has allowed Michael Muller and Rob Lowe to really focus on creating expansive soundscapes, with ties to stories of French saints, Greta Thurnburg and general meditations on the state of the natural world. Their music, as always, is a truly immersive experience; you’ve got to let yourself go, allowing the slight nuances to move you in new directions in step with the song’s careful meandering. Never a bad day for a new track to come our way from this lot; they’ll be releasing The Wind later this year via Deutsche Grammophon.
