BouncyNew Song from Ramona Falls

Brent Knopf is probably best known for his work in Menomena, but his work with Ramona Falls seems to be leading him in a really remarkable direction.  The group will release their second album, Prophet, via Barsuk on May 1st, and I won’t be let down if it sounds anything at all like the track below.  It’s got a lot of maneuvering going on musically, with slight bits of beautiful vocals thrown here and there. As it comes to a close, it takes on a more spirited emotion, ending with a track that we won’t soon forget.  Better get on this soon; it’s that good. Plus, check out a track they tossed out earlier that I completely skipped over! Sorry about that.

Nice Track from Dive

This track surfaced towards the tail end of last week, and the more I listen to it, the harder it is not to fall head over heels in love with Dive.  The band recently signed on with Captured Tracks, who will release their album Oshin on June 26th.  There’s a similar bounce to the early work of Beach Fossils (no surprise since the bands share members) holding the pacing on this track, but you can definitely see that the group’s placed a bit more emphasis on the clarity of the lyrics and guitar sounds; i the end, it makes for a much warmer sound, yet still very intimate.  We’re all going to enjoy playing this one.

Upbeat Jam from Wintersleep

Wintersleep is by no means a new band, having worked hard for the last decade or so perfecting their sound.  But, based on this new track they’ve just released from their upcoming album, Hello Hum, it could be a year where they go big.  This single has sort of a jittery feeling to it, almost as if it’s stuttering at points, but the pulsing rhythm of the backbone really propels the song forward.  Combine that with the relaxed approach of the vocals, and you’ve got yourself a track everyone will enjoy.  The record comes out on June 12th, so be sure to grab it at the local record store.

New Jam from Fresh and Onlys

Earlier today P4K threw out this great new track from The Fresh and Onlys, which appears on a compilation (HERE) between the band’s new label Mexican Summer and Software.  While I completely dig the sound, it appears as if it’s going to end up a B-Side of sorts, being tossed aside for the band’s upcoming label.  Once again, you can see the band really progressing in their songwriting, eliminating a lot of the cacophony that was on earlier recordings.  I’m digging the chorus quite a bit, and if this is an outtake, there’s no telling how good the new album will be when it finally sees the light.

Sweet Electro Pop from Seventeen Evergreen

Okay, so if you just listen to the first little bit of this song, then you’ll definitely get the electro-pop elements featured at the beginning of this new jam by Seventeen Evergreen.  But, while the song goes along, it evolves into more of an avant-pop construction, coating the track with slight bits of ambient noise, before returning to the electro-pop hook.  You can find this track this week in your local record store on the group’s new release, Steady On, Scientist, which was put out by Lucky Number.  It’s definitely more than just your average listening affair, so get on it!

More New Jams from Suckers

You know we’re supporters of Suckers, so we’re happy to offer up a nice stream of the band’s second single from their upcoming record, Candy Salad.  Said record, the group’s second, will be out on April 24th on Frenchkiss Records, and you can expect a little bit of a different sound this time.  The group seems a lot more focused in the recording of this effort, offering up a tightened sound this go around.  It does lose a little bit of the magic from their debut, yet you’ll definitely find plenty to fall for on this effort, such as the band’s favorite accompaniment–a nice heartfelt whistle.

New Music and Free Album from Treefort

Madison’s always had a vibrant music scene, and it appears there’s a new band coming out of the scene that I expect to make some waves.  Treefort is the name of the group, and they’ve just released Tres Fort.  On the opening track, which we’ve got below, the track opens with cascading guitars; I dig the bright guitar beneath the fuzzed out riffs.  It’s a bit like a shoe gaze track, but there’s more of a concise pop element to it.  The band just released this record for free on their site, but you can also help the group out by purchasing a cassette from them for super cheap.  Hope you dig it.

Listen to the Softer Side of Tim Cohen (Magic Trick)

You all should know Tim Cohen as the lead in Fresh and Onlys, and hopefully some of you’ve heard his solo work as either Tim Cohen or Magic Trick.  This time around, he’s teamed up with some friends (members of Aisler’s Set and Kelly Stoltz band) to flesh out the line-up for Magic Trick; the group will release Ruler of the Night via Hardly Art on June 12th.  I love how you can always hear bits of Cohen’s other work slip into this sort of thing, but this effort definitely sounds like it’s being give a really mellow treatment.  Even so, it’s clear that Cohen’s always a captivating as a composer, so this is no surprise I’m loving this track.

Strawberry Whiplash – Hits in the Car

Rating: ★★★★☆

It’s strange to think that Hits in the Car is truly the debut record for Strawberry Whiplash; seems like I’ve been posting their singles or B-Sides for years now.  Regardless, this collection of thirteen great pop tunes is pretty spot-on for a debut, going between infectious indie pop and noisy janglings; its all worth every minute of time you invest, and one can only suspect that you’ll get more back the more you put in.

Perhaps one of my favorite attributes of this sort of pop is the simplicity of both the entire construction, from song title to the execution of the track itself, it’s no small feat to pull this off as well as Strawberry Whiplash does.  Take, for instance, “Everyone’s Texting,” which might seem like sort an arbitrary song, as we’re aware everyone is definitely texting.  But, from the slight jangle in the guitar work, to the steadying drum beat, the song is more than just plain commentary; it’s pristine pop.

For me, one of the best things about Hits in the Car is the effortless playfulness that seems to coincide with the group’s work.  You can listen to “What Do They Say About Me” and hear that nostalgic swirling guitar, but Sandra’s vocals, purposefully stuttering at points, show both the fun and attention to detail that goes into pop like this.  Even smashing hit “Stop Look and Listen” plays with the vocal delivery, which either demonstrates the fun they’re having, or just their reliance on capturing the perfect hook–it all works for me.

Even more promising is some of the slight experimentation that comes into play on the album, showing that Strawberry Whiplash have other places they’re willing to go, musically speaking.  “It Came to Nothing” has this great little power-pop swagger to it, as Sandra sings gently atop it all.  Or you can listen to the band as they dabble in the noise-rock territory, one of the few songs where Laz takes control of the vocal duties.  The other track where he features prominently is “You Make Me Shine,” a song that sounds remarkably like something you’d expect the Magnetic Fields to craft. You’ve got to credit a group that aren’t willing to be pigeon-holed by their own sound, or the masses for that matter.

When it boils down to it all, you can easily write about each one of these songs as great singles, and assuredly that’s what the group intended with the titles Hits in the Car.  What’s surprising is that they pulled it off, rather successfully.  You can listen to Strawberry Whiplash‘s new effort bits at a time, or as an entire collection, but no matter what, you’re going to find yourself loving it.  It’s simple, it’s poppy, it’s experimental; really, it’s just a gem of a record.

New (ish) Rocker from Mean Jeans

As we finally get our feet back under us after the work leading up to SXSW, I really wanted to toss out this track that’s been living in my inbox.  The song comes from the new Mean Jeans album, On Mars, which will be released by the excellent folks over at Dirtnap Records on April 17th.  If you’re in need of an energetic boost to get your Monday off, then be glad I saved this number until today; it builds with infectious hooks, then bursts off into a snotty vocal delivery.  You’ll definitely find the cure for a case of the Mondays by turning this one up!
