New Music from Nathan K

I was first introduced to Nathan K‘s music while listening to his other group, Stepdad, but now he’s stepped out for just a minute to offer up a brand new album of really mellow tunes.  All these songs stem from time spent with his dying grandfather in the hospital, which clearly makes this a very personal album for him.  Clearly, it’s not the most uplifting affair, but he’s really done an incredible job allowing us a brief view into this experience.  All these songs appear on his release Dishes, with the majority of these tunes recorded late at night on a four-track while he tended to his ailing grandfather.  Sometimes with great tragedy we see great beauty.

Chilled Tune from The Sea and Cake

I believe my first introduction to The Sea and Cake came from my friend Ryan Jewell back in 2000–somehow he turned me onto Oui, the band’s current release (at that time).  I love how they combined really mellow indie rock elements with bits of jazz fusion, and it always fascinated me that more people didn’t understand, or care I guess, about the band.  Still, Sam Prekop and his posse have been going strong for some time, and they’re about to release Runner, their latest for Thrill Jockey, on September 18th.  This new track really has me excited for the release with its underlying brightness, yet ageless sound. I’m always going to dig this band; do you?

Stripped Down Jam from Helvetia

I’m really digging the sound of this new track from Helvetia, who’ve just signed on with Joyful Noise Recordings.  It’s got a classic 90s indie rock sound, but that doesn’t mean that it’s outdated by any means.  There’s something about the vocal delivery; it’s almost as if there’s a bit of twang or drawl hanging on every note.  As the song changes direction in towards the end, you can see that the group’s not content to settle on any one sound in particular, pushing themselves to include some sonic extensions. You can grab this tune and others on September 11th when the group releases their new record, Nothing In Rambling.

Stream Voyeur Album from Saint Motel Here!

Long have we praised the work of Saint Motel, so we’re pleased to offer the album stream for the band’s newest record, Voyeur (the album is out now!).  They’ve been generous enough to let us share it with you, but if you’re generous, you’ll pick up the physical copy, which features moving eyes in the sleeve! It’s pretty much a clever pop record that begs to be played again and again, and we’re also happy to announce we’ll be sponsoring the group’s show when they come to Austin on August 4th at Stubbs!  You can listen to the album stream HERE, and don’t forget to support the bands we love–and you love too! In case you forgot how much fun you could have jamming to this band, here’s a sample tune that’s also on the album stream.

New Soul Track from Cody Chesnutt

So we don’t always branch too far out with our musical tastes, but we probably listen to far more than we let on…RayRay is really into the Killers this week.  Personally, I’m just really excited by this new Cody Chesnutt track that popped up.  I’ve been a fan of Cody’s since he first released “Look Good in Leather,” which still makes its way onto my playlists; he’s got hooks and an old school feel I can’t get out of my head.  He’s working on a new album titled Landing on a Hundred, and you can help him put it out by donating HERE. It might not be for everybody, but it’s definitely for me; I already donated!

New Quirky Pop from Saint Motel

One of the band’s I’ve fallen in love with the last year is Saint Motel.  They’ve nearing the release of their newest record, Voyeur, and I expect it to be all over the place, in only the best way possible.  They’ve tossed some gems our way already, and they’re letting us run another great track, “Benny Goodman,” which demonstrates the band’s playfulness.  I think one of the best things about the group is their willing to throw all conventions out the window, writing catchy pop music on their own terms. Love them or hate them, they do it in their own way, and you better respect that. They’ll be bringing their great live show to Austin on August 4th, so start getting ready.

Original Slumberland Records Act Lorelei Returns

Slumberland Records has made a name for itself recently by signing big acts like Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Terry Malts, but we often forget just how long the label has been promoting great tunes. Luckily, a lot of their first wave of bands are coming back to the fold as the label’s popularity continues to rise.  One such act is Lorelei, who will be releasing their first album since 1994 on August 14th.  The record is called Enterprising Sidewalks, and it picks up where the band left off, crafting beautiful melodies backed by some jagged cutting guitars.  This is the sort of music that gave the label the ability to rise to its current position, so I’m happy to see a solid return to form.

More New Music from Magic Trick

Tim Cohen‘s newest track has been floating around for a few weeks now, but it was just made available to us, so I’ve got to fawn over Magic Trick some more.  His newest LP, Ruler  of the Night will be out on Hardly Art this week, and I suggest you pick it up if you know what’s good for you.  Of course, if you’re familiar with Tim’s work in Fresh and Onlys, the slow progression of the guitar and Cohen’s vocals will certainly be surprising. There’s an abundance of creativity, however, in the song’s final construction, which is one of the things that’s made listening to Magic Trick so enjoyable.  Dig in folks.

Great New Tune from Tiger Waves

Obviously Tiger Waves are one of our favorite acts, and as they continue to work together, they become increasingly better.  We’re going to help the band by putting out their next album, which is still being recorded, but they’ve passed along this great new song; I’m practically ready to put this record out already.  You’ll find that the vocals are vibrant, yet just a bit quiet in the mix; it’s one of the things I really enjoy about the group’s recordings.  I’m not going to spend time trying to compare them to anyone else, as they’ve gone to eclipse obvious influences by creating a sound entirely their own.  We’ll keep you posted as more details unfold about the group’s next record, but for now, enjoy “Weekends.”

New Jams from Seapony (+ New Album)

We were fortunate enough to have Seapony play at our SXSW party this year, so we’re happy to hear that the band are already about to return with a new record, titled Falling (odd title considering the release date is September 11th).  It will, again, be released by the hard-working folks over at Hardly Art, and I’m really loving this new track.  Jen’s voice sounds really good, but there’s a directness to this track that is quite striking; there’s less of a shoegaze element to the song, though you can still find a bit of the group’s endearing haziness.  I can’t tell you how excited I am for this record.
