Eades Sign to Heist or Hit

Eades were getting some heavy rotation on our site last year, brandishing an energetic brand of pop rock with just a hint of swagger. Now, we’ve got news that the band have signed on to tastemaker Heist or Hit, who will be releasing a brand new EP from the band in April. This track’s all about the pop vibes, focusing on some of that jittering stutter-step guitar, plodding back and forth; it’s almost call-and-response, though with a hint at heavy alternative grooves. Their rocking abilities hand out on the song’s backside, as they let the track fade out with a rush of blood to the head.

Waves of Dread Release Endless EP

Since they began a few years ago, I’ve been increasingly pleased by Waves of Dread; they seem to operate outside the confines of traditional indie media, instead building their name on their mysterious online presence. They continue to build momentum musically too, having just dropped this great Endless EP; it opens with this epic 7 minute experimental tune, wavering between tradition and nuanced pop. Traditionalists in the shoegaze arena will likely find their pleasure in the closing track “Twilight,” but as for me, I’m staking my claim to “Way It Is;” I loved the guitar sounds that quickly peel back for this seductive, soft vocal portrayal. You can’t go wrong listening to these tunes.

Max Foreman Shares Underground Video

Max Foreman‘s spent the better part of two decades playing in various projects (Bouquet/Tenebre), but this year he steps out on his own terms to deliver his debut solo effort. On the title track from his forthcoming Underground EP, you get a glimpse of the musical landscape he straddles on this release; he seems to draw from both his electronic background and his West Coast locale. I love the ever so subtle move into the chorus, delivering this delicate little twist into sunny psychedelia with an electronic pulse that snakes through the song’s entirety. Lurking in the back half, you’ll find this volcanic pop explosion, though brief, it adds brightness to this this dark tinged pop track. Max will release his EP on March 5th!

Midden Heap Share Girl on a Train

I know we’re all supposed to be on top of our list coverage, but music must go on, and apparently its in Baltimore today. We’ve got this great track from Midden Heap, who just dropped an EP on Friday titled Do You Think It’s Not the Other Way Around. I love this track below; it has an understated jangle to it, kind of like something you might have found on Sarah Records, or maybe in a Galaxie 500 set list. There’s this bedroom quality too, which gives you that natural intimacy that we all adore, no matter the genre. An uplifting guitar pop moment? Why, yes please!

The Hannah Barberas Drop Winter EP

We’ve not hidden our adoration for The Hannah Barberas, and as they share their Winter EP with this world, why not highlight one of my favorite tunes from the record? They don’t even play around here, jumping right in with that jangling indiepop guitar line as the drums shuffle their way into the mix. Of course, the band, always experts at combining vocals, bring the big harmonies here, matching line for line in the chorus to cleverly slide melody through your speakers. I love the fuzzier bit that comes in around 1:35, just giving a little blast of volume to round out the rock n’ roll joy. All proceeds from this EP go to Shelter.

Listen to Smut’s Power Fantasy EP

Having already shared Smut‘s pop rock hit “Fan Age,” I wanted to make sure you got a chance to listen to the whole of the band’s new EP, which just dropped on Friday via Bayonet. If you didn’t check out my original piece, I called “Fan Age,” the EP opener, a perfect blend of the Beths and Best Coast; it offers up a soft meandering dream in the fist 1.5 minutes before dropping the pop rock hooks that keep your attention. “Power Fantasy” revels in that dreamier world, sparkling with these melodic vocals that cut through the dancing/jangling guitar chords and shimmering cymbal work. They close the EP with a piece of down-trodden pop, again building the tension until distorted guitars craft this noisy wall in a delightful chorus. Fans of the dream-pop, shoegaze genre will find a nice home here; it reminds me a lot of Seablite in certain ways too! Grab the Power Fantasy 7″!

Asa Morris Readies Another EP

The quarantine has kept songwriter Asa Morris rather busy, having already released 3 EPs this year, so why not drop one last one in there before we wrap up the shiftiness that is 2020. I love the hidden feel of the vocals, as if they’re whispering to me from somewhere down the hallway. Musically, there’s this really subtle melodic fall; it first happens in the song around the 50 second mark, and its admittedly the moment that I found myself swooning over this tune here. Loud & Sad is the name of Asa’s new EP, and if it sounds like this, you’re surely going to be hearing from me again.

Lost Tapes Return with Quoting Salter EP

I always love the stuff that Lost Tapes release; they seem to have this knack for crafting just the right brand of melodic pop that lets the mind wonder. With their latest single, I can’t help but think of myself rocking gently in a nice hammock, breezily blowing in the wind as I let my eyes rest and my mind escape the mundane daily rituals. Things seem so clean and perfect in the way the duo work their songs, and in doing so, they create these nuggets of pop joy; it’s like unwrapping your Christmas present early and realizing nothing else in this moment matters. They’ll be releasing the Quoting Salter EP on December 4th via the esteemed Sunday Records.

Gritty Number From Obscura Hail

In my never ending quest to find some new tunes which offer a unique take on older genres, one need look no further than this new track “Doomer” from Melbourne based band Obscura Hail. The group, lead by Sean Conran, take elements of grunge rock and a sludge rock style and pair them effectively with some nice poppier elements and impressive vocal work. I especially love the unique fuzz sound coming through on the guitar throughout the song to give the track some real teeth. You gotta love this one.

Obscura Hail will be releasing a new EP entitled Siren on September 8th via Dot Dash/Remote Control.

Album Stream: Phantom Handshakes Be Estranged EP

A few weeks back we introduced you, or so we hoped, to the new project of Matt Sklar and Federica Tassano named Phantom Handshakes. Tomorrow, they’ll drop their brand new Be Estranged EP, but you can sample it here first!

The opening tracks set the stage for a dream pop meets jangle world; the guitars twist and turn in that angular post-punk dance I dig, while Federica lets her heavenly voice weave in and out of those chords. Still, you get a touch of respite in “At Rest” coming in with more oa subdued pop performance by Tassano; it’s all about her voice, despite the twinkling behind her. Jump ahead to “You Are an Idea” and you’ll find my favorite number of the 7; there’s a purity to the presentation, its clear of all pretense, giving listeners this purely elegant pop song. “Drift Away” is the perfect closing send-off for this EP; both the title and the effect of the song have you sailing away on this pillowy cloud of escapism. Be Estranged will be available on all platforms tomorrow! All proceeds go to Color of Change.
