Lost Ships Drop New EP

The Lost Ships are following up their Best Laid Plans EP with the brand new All of the Pieces EP. They brandish the sort of indiepop that walks that fine line with power-pop, infusing their jangling guitar chords this round with a little bit more volume up front. The first two tracks off this EP are just that, swelling with warm melody wrapped around the slightest jangling notes. But, “How Can I Face the World” has a little bit more punch than one might have initially have expected; it’s almost a full-fledged rock song…albeit one spun in the vein of pop fans like myself. Of course, they back that up with the gentle ballad “Sheila Believe Me” to close things out, which is this striking ballad atop a thick piano background. Their new EP is being handled by the taste makers at Subjangle.

The Memory Fades Release New EP

Remember when all I did was rave about the Memory Fades, well, I’m back to ramp that up again now that the band have the new Space Pilot EP out there in the world. I feel like listening to the first two tracks seems like a fitting match, as one sounds like Jesus and the Mary Chain, while the other cops to jamming to JAMC, though its admittedly stylistically different than the preceding tune. Me? My favorite is “Run Away;” it reminds me a lot of our friends in Harlem, at least in the structure of the song, but you do have to strip away the garage rock tendencies and replace them with an adoration for pop music. Another pop ballad with a special story is thrown into the EPs back end, just to make sure your addiction to sweetness is sated.

Nice To Meet You: Bluey

We as an ATH crew absolutely love that moment when you try a new piece of music and immediately love what you’re hearing. Today my new discovery joy comes by way of Melbourne based artist Lachie Gilmour and his project known as Bluey. Along with his mate Michael Vince Moin, Gilmour created an EP of new music working solely in his tiny bedroom studio. The product of his efforts so far is this single, “No Plans” which is a lovely blend of songwriters like Elliot Smith with a more electronic/bed room sound of bands like Toro y Moi or Hoops. Somehow it’s similar to those artists yet creates something truly special and unique at the same time.

No word yet on the official release date for the new EP from Bluey, but it should be coming sometime this fall on Roolette Records.

Poppongene is Eternally Alone

Man, it’s only going to take a you a few seconds before you’re totally hooked on this brand new track from Poppongene. It opens with this seductive bounce that has you tapping your toes and bobbing your head, at least if you’re like me sitting at a desk this morning. Then, as the vocals come in, you can see some nice comparisons to like-minded Aussie, Stella Donnelly; the lyrics also share a similar sense of wit. This track’s all about falling for someone, of course, only when time allows for it. Had a lot of solid Australian hits up this week already, but this might just be my favorite? Try it on, will you? She’ll have a new EP coming out later this year!

ATX Spotlight: Town Lake

Town Lake is an Austin band who got together back in 2017 after all members spent some time in well known Austin bands like The Calm Blue Sea, Go Nova, and Summer Fires. After some time spent playing live shows and recording tunes, the band released their promising new EP Demonstrations last April. For a taste of what the band has to offer, take a second and check out the bands new single “Homesick” streaming below. The band, at its core, has a blues inspired, southern sound with a lead singer in Gus Ochoa who sometimes sounds like Brandon Flowers when he could still sing. Zing! In the end, the band make a great rock n roll sound which is a welcome addition to what tends to be a non rockin’ scene in Austin.

Brand New Music from Flying Fish Cove

I guess when you’re on, you’re on, or so is the case with Flying Fish Cove. The band have only recently released the most excellent At Moonset LP, but now they’ve turned around to prep your ears for a new EP. Their first single from the EP has the band at their best; I think you could compare them to Alvvays here. There’s this natural softness in Dena’s voice that creates this soothing emotion that washes over you, letting you know everything’s alright; she gets a little help from a male backing role, but it’s all her show. The rest of the band sit back, lightly filling in the space with some of the best pop sounds you’ll hear today. You can’t stop the hits coming from this bunch right now, but you will have to wait for the new EP; it drops on June 21st via Jigsaw/Lost Sound Tapes.

Electro Pop From Vola Tila

While not always my personal style of music, I can always appreciate some electronic pop with a solid beat and driving sound. If you can get behind the style as well, I suggest you check out this banging new track called “Turn Back Time” From Swedish based duo Vola Tila. It reminds me of Drive soundtrack music from Cliff Martinez made more accessible with dark, electronic elements of bands like The XX. I am already looking forward to jamming this one as I drive around town today while pumping my fist in the air.

Vola Tila will be releasing their deput EP Personality Apocalypse in the next few months.

Pleased to Meet You: Jettes

Berlin’s Gurr have been bopping around for the better part of the last ten years, and this year the group really hit home with their She Says EP. Why is that important in this Jettes post, you ask? Well, Laura Lee of Gurr is also one half of Jettes, along with Melody Connor who moved from Seattle out to Berlin to write the aforementioned EP. Our first taste is this fuzzy pop number, hazy in both its video and musical presentation; I love the cascading guitar line that sort of dives in the distance if you put your ear close to the speakers. Plus, there’s this little momentary breakdown with some soundbites in it that leaves the band with plenty of room to grow in different directions. Real excited to hear more from these two!

Listen to More Film School

Film School is one of those bands that really makes me angry about the world. They offer this dreamy indie rock that sort of fuses all these brilliant elements, but sadly, everyone else gets to take home the glory. Here, they almost seem like their looking upon the early days of Interpol with reverence; it’s a bit post-punks in its natural propulsion, though there’s just a bit more shimmer in the guitar. I always get carried away with this group, playing their songs non-stop, and I can feel myself going there today. Look out for the group’s new EP this Summer, or keep your eyes peeled as they hit the road with Mint Field.

New Music from Tim Chaplin

I love writing about Tim Chaplin; he’s an artist that works at his own pace, crafting his own style from the confines of his own tastes. That said, he’s been quiet since the end of 2018, but now it looks like he’s ready to offer up a new EP. Our first listen has Tim being Tim, offering up this softened vocal, drawing close to the realm of indiepop. That said, the music sits back, filled with guitar lines that sort of seem to be walking on eggshells behind Tim; there are a few instances when the song seems like it’s going to breakout, but it always gets pulled back to focus on melody. Different Currents is the new EP, and it’s available for streaming services.
