Pony Hunt Share Stardust Video

I love a great video, particularly when its paired with equally great song, like the latest from Pony Hunt. For me, the song was a rolling journey, begun by the drum beat; they set you up with a soft roll, laying out the world before your feet. It’s then that Jessie Antonick’s voice enters the fray, serenading you with this heavenly voice, filled with guttural emotion, yet sparkling in the dark shades of the song. I appreciate the little breakdown just after the 2 minute mark, offering a slight soul performance in the midst of the tune’s dense sound, which eventually creeps back in and carries the song to a close. This song appears on the new record, VAR!, which is out on July 23rd via Wing and Wing.

Kelly Duplex Shares Hoverround

I woke up this morning wanting something that was heavy, but still clung tightly to the simple pop structures that make me tick, so I was lucky to have this Kelly Duplex tune waiting for me. Honestly, the New Orleans trio reminds me a lot of our friends Growl (RIP), intertwining emo tendencies and power pop riffs to sublime effect. You can see yourself in this song, bouncing on your bed and playing those heavy air guitar riffs, only to collapse as the song fades out and a huge grin creeps across your face. Sometimes a simple rock song is all you need to turn the day around. Look for the band to release their self-titled LP via Strange Daisy on February 12th.

New Tune from Night Water

Admittedly, I’m a sucker for a touch of a jazzy/Latin vibe working its way into pop music; it has the feel of a real classy lounge act, and I have no shame in saying I enjoy that. This track from Night Water is definitely of that ilk; it has the intimacy of a crooner working his way through a crowd. But, there are a few moments when the band get to flex their muscles appropriately, giving the song the right amount of punch to keep the track more than interesting. This tune appears on the band’s new effort, Leave No Trace, which drops on January 7th of next year.

Electric Arch Share One More Single

Prior to the Friday release date of new album Out of Range, New Orleans based Electric Arch has this new single called “Las Ramblas” ready for your listening pleasure. The band, featuring compositions from main main James Marler, features a heavy layered, beat driven style of pop music. As I continue to listen to this song a few times, I’m finding new layers to peel back and discover each and every time. It’s wild man.

Quiet Beauty From Carver Baronda

I hope you will join me in welcoming to the new artist buzz train New Orleans based songwriter Carver Baronda. She makes incredibly personal, heartfelt folk inspired tunes with hints of reverb and sparse backing beats. Our first exposure to this delightful new artist comes from her latest single “Devotion”. For me it fits perfectly as something coming out of New Orleans right now as hurricanes and weather threat the region again and we all seem to question our devotion to various things. Lovely songwriting.

Bardona will release a debut EP entitled Spooky Love on October 18th. (pre-order)

Have Some Fun With Val Hollie

unnamed (3)Peter Campanelli currently has a great project going under the moniker Val Hollie I think all of you should check out.  He’s already shared a couple of singles from the project, but today I think the he’s just released a rel gem with this tune called “Stepping Outside”.  Possibly in the psych pop genre, this is a true jam worthy of many repeat plays.  This has been on repeat all day….

You can get the debut, self-titled EP from Val Hollie on November 13th.

Pop Tune from Sun Hotel

sunneeI’m pretty sure the award for longest song title of 2015 is going to go to Sun Hotel, but dammit if it’s not just a great song to listen to any time of the day.  There’s an urgency in the guitar playing, and something I’m finding quite relatable in the way the vocals are delivered; it sort of reminds me of a calmer version of art-rockers Ought.  Sadly, it sounds like their new effort, Rational Expectations, might be their last as members are slated to move on to new projects; I’ll still enjoy this when it comes out via Community Records on February 3rd.
