Mammoth Penguins Share Everything That I Write

It should be obvious this many years on in our site that we’re probably always going to rep Emma Kupa acts, especially if its Mammoth Penguins. Today, they’ve got a fresh single from their forthcoming Here LP, and it’s pretty much a staple track for the band in terms of their sound. They have this enthralling pattern of taking their sharp angular licks and pushing them into distortion, which always pans out in this magnificent vocal display from Emma. Here, her voice hits its peak, only to fold back into the warm melodic range. And what, you don’t like bobbing bass lines? Then don’t stop here! But, if you do, Here is out May 3rd via Fika Recordings.

Unwed Sailor Share Blue Tangier Single

Having just caught Mogwai play the other night, it seems fitting that I’m settling into my midweek with a fresh track from Oklahoma’s Unwed Sailor. Both bands have always operated in like territory, creating narratives within the realms of instrumental rock, much like this single below. At its start, it’s harrowing in a sense, synth notes washing over a thunderous riff, until the the lead guitar begins its journey. That journey sees a glimmer of light work its way into the track, telling a story of reaching out of the darkness to find comfort, which is where you are just after the 1 minute mark. Thundering noise sneaks in too, but it’s a reminder that there’s a natural ebb and flow to the tale coming through your speakers. If you’re into instrumental storytelling, you need look no further than Underwater Over There, out May 10th!

Lightheaded Announce Combustible Gems

We were floored when we first latched onto Lightheaded; they had this indiepop sensibility with a nostalgic girl-group charm. Today, that sentiment grows, as they seem to be furthering their sound, albeit with all the same charms as their early work. It’s quite difficult to really get into the norm-core descriptors; there’s a bit of paisely jangling going on, but sort of an art-pop croon that wouldn’t be out of reach from a Nico or Mary Weiss comparison. Still, even in that artistic realm, there’s an element of joyousness that seems to naturally seep through the craft, making it difficult to turn away from all their work has to offer. Prepare yourself for Combustible Gems, which is out on May 17th via Slumberland Records.

Babehoven Release Lightness is Loud Video

Perhaps its because of my affection for the work of Michel Gondry, or perhaps its the all encompassing sense of wonderment this tune evokes, but I’m definitely charmed by this new Babehoven tune. Maya Bon’s voice naturally seems to carry this delicate bit of whimsy, which when invested in the folk arrangements of the band’s songs, just seems otherworldly; this is the sort of music that’s perfect for your goals of escapism. Find yourself sinking into the crafty world they’ve built for us; Water’s Here In You is out on April 26th via Double Double Whammy.

ATH Premiere: Magana Shares Break Free

If you’ve been going to shows the last few years, you’ve likely encountered Jeni Magana, who has been seen playing bass with both Lady Lamb and Mitski. But, for today, we bring you news of her new solo record under the Magana moniker, which I’m thinking will have her on your radar for the time being. Your ears are instantly met by a deep wash of synths, with Jeni entering the picture moments later, her voice falling like a soft rain atop the dream soundscape. Then you hit that 24 second mark and a thumping beat joins, intoxicatingly spinning you about as the track steadies itself on those falling vocal lines. When the guitar line shoots through with a solo, you’ll probably already be mesmerized, with the track’s pulse and vocals pulling you into the depths with their mantra-like feel. A powerful statement, so be on the lookout for Teeth, dropping March 25th via Audio Antihero/Colored Pencils.

Baula Share Parasite Single

Baula popped up on my radar a few months ago with their single “Mercury in Retrograde,” and this new tune has them playing in familiar dark pop territory. There’s a forceful nature to this track, opening with this thunderous guitar line that carries massive power within it. They balance this dark brood with a serene vocal, carrying a bit of wistfulness that allows the song to reach for a perfect future amidst the cloudy background they’ve built up around it; their ability to balance the light and dark spots of their sound is what has made their songs so captivating. Their debut album Heavy Heart, No Tears will be out in April.

Fantastic Purple Spots Share Vibrations Now Video

It’s been just over a month since we helped Fantastic Purple Spots get their Vibrations Now EP out into the world, and today we’re here to encourage you to revisit those jams by checking out the band’s self-created video. The video takes the same visual art that the band used for their EP cover art, only this time, there’s movement, with the psychedelic notes signaling movement within the visual journey. Good Looks Announce Lived Here for a While

When Bummer Year came out a few years ago, everyone in Austin was glad you could all finally understand our adoration for Good Looks. They’re the friendly band’s band, the band you want to hang out with, the band you want to book shows with…and ultimately, a band we’re all hoping finds success. Today, you get to hear a fresh new tune from the group’s sophomore LP, Lived Here for a While; I love the way it kicks off with a nice punch of energy, letting a second guitar line turn the song into this rhythmic jaunt through sunny days. It’s interesting to find so much joy in a song where singer Tyler Jordan’s dissecting his own heartbreak…not to mention all the hardships the band’s endured (Jake Ames injury, burning vans)…but there’s something uplifting and promising about the way the lyrics see us all moving on in life. Can’t wait for more folks to fall in love with the band; they drop the new LP on June 7th via Keeled Scales.

Washer Drop Fresh Single

After dropping Improved Means to Deteriorated Ends, I’ll admit, I wasn’t quite expecting Washer to jump right back and deliver new music, but here they are with fresh single for your ears! There’s something about the songwriting on this tune that feels like a mid90s rocker, hinting at grungy riffs but pushing more towards a kind of college rock feel. There’s a certain indifference in their approach, just selling these crunchy riffs that blast through the speakers while the vocals carry this biting cool; when they let loose at the end it just feels like the band are fully embracing the fun and joy of playing together. Lunchbox Announce Pop and Circumstance

Seems like just yesterday that Lunchbox dropped the most excellent After School Special, and today it seems like another batch of hits is on the way; they announced their new LP Pop and Circumstance today. Opening with a blast of horn work and thundering drums, the song has a jangling undercurrent that sets up the group’s pop drive. When the vocals come in, they’re delivered casually, using backing vocals to layer on a bit more melody; the horns continue to punctuate the song, blasting pop notes right through your speakers. It’s a short jaunt, but one that carries a dose of pop sharpness that might surprise. Pop and Circumstance drops May 10th via Slumberland.
