Expensive Music Band Share RNR Cliche

Those in the Aussie scene surely know of Troon Lienard, an outsider pop artists for some time, but for those not hip to his work, we’re bringing new of fresh tunes from Expensive Music Band to you all today. Troon’s joined by a who’s who of the underground scene overseas, fleshing out the core of this tune with this insatiable little bob and weave. As many things Troon’s been spinning, there’s a wry sense of humor, with this song taking aim at the trope of the glamorous rock n’ roll lifestyles (nee RNR). Take that DIY ethos, a fashionable sense of pop, then throw it in with a pinch of quirkiness and a heady groove, and you’ve got the hit below…all courtesy of Permanent Slump/Exclusive Culture.

Lachlan Denton Shares You Video

It seems like today is as good a day as any to spend our time in the Oceanic region of Australia, especially when there’s new music to be heard from Lachlan Denton. Long has he been adored songwriter on this site, but with his forthcoming album, Furnishings, on the horizon, there seems to be this acceptance and maturity in his craft. For instance, atop the buoyant vibe of the music, Denton weaves a promise of finding comfort in the ones you love and riding out whatever storms may approach; it’s not going to be filled with sunshine and rainbows, but you whatever end we all meet should be done with friends. It’s good to see friends Snowy and Curtis also make an appearance in the video, a seeming documentary on a day in the life of Lach. And as he’s done with his tunes of late, there’s a nice punch burst just after the two minute mark. Furnishings drops on April 14th via Bobo Integral/Spunk/Osborne Again.

Terry Drop New Video for Gronks

As we await the release of the new Terry LP, we’ll have to make do with the fresh singles they sprinkle in the interim. Their latest single reminds me of that late 90s/early 00s era of indie rock, particularly in the way the horns are used to buoy the rhythmic bounce at the song’s center; it frankly reminds me a bit of Beulah, bringing in a bit of fuzz and groove to the indie sphere. Of course, Terry have a unique manner of delivering the vocals, so that aids in the way the group crafts their hook for listeners. Call Me Terry will hit on April 14th via Upset the Rhythm.

T. G. Shand Drops Fatwood

We have been keeping an eye on TG Shand over the last few years, with the most recent coverage promising that there was a new EP on the way from the New Zealand based artist. Today, we get a brand single, though no mention of that EP…still, I’ll always give the sounds a go. I love that there’s this sort of juxtaposition that permeates the tune; you get this beautiful dreaminess that operates as the core, but in between you get these heavier moments of fuzzed out riffs and beats. It all toys with your mind, but with that powerful vocal, you ‘ll find that you can’t pull away.

Weird Numbers Share Summer Legs

When I last covered the forthcoming Weird Numbers LP, the band were offering up this sort of jagged back-and-forth stomp in the vein of post-punk. This go round, the rhythm section and the opening guitar lines brought in something more energetic, pushing the speed and hooks right through your speakers. I’d press play on this for the guitar sounds alone; angular and gritty, always rushing forward. Still, the vocals keep the song’s calm in the midst of the storm, steadying the ship so to speak. Energetic and cool, Weird Numbers is sounding like a ripping good time; it drops Friday via Dandy Boy Records!

High Water Marks Share An Imposed Exile

After working on this site for the better part of 15 years, there are some things that ultimately supersede trends and cool points: pop execution. Admittedly, there’s a lot of up-and-comers bringing in new brands of pop that are equally as interesting as they are challenging, but when it comes to the High Water Marks, I’m all about the execution of perfect pop. Sure, they’ve got founding Elephant 6 members in the band, but the melodic nature of the vocals galloping atop those fuzzy jangling guitars is just absolutely sublime. There’s something freeing about the tried and true, so I’m soaring with this new nugget of perfect pop; the band release Your Next Wolf on June 9th.

Vanity Mirror Share Tuesday’s News

A lot of artists that throw their hat in the nostalgia ring, looking back at certain periods of music to make it their very own. Vanity Mirror are one of those acts, seemingly culling their influences to look at the pop sounds of the late 60s. But, in doing that, there’s some recording flare, and just a bit of outsider mentality that makes it feel earnest and present, more than a throwback. I honestly feel like the band’s vocals and melodies owe a great deal to Elliott Smith, while the music definitely takes on that Beatles-esque nod. If you’re digging on it, the band drop their debut Puff via We Are Busy Bodies on May 12th.

Hallo Share Cold Magic Single

There’s this hugely cinematic nature to the latest single from Austin’s Hallo, which makes complete sense considering the band is helmed by artist/actor/director Tiana Stuart. Musically, the song’s riding that powerful ballad format, somewhere between Jenny Lewis and Sharon van Etten, which we can all agree is a pretty special place to find yourself. But, there’s something about the production work done by Erik Wofford that just gives the track this larger-than-life quality; it just feels like it’s meant for that important moment in the greatest scene of your life. With the promise of a debut album soon to come, it’s time we all get acquainted with this rising Austin act.

Whitney’s Playland Share Mercy Single

There’s something rad going on with the craft of Whitney’s Playland; they feel like they’re channeling elements of 90s radio rock, a la Elastica or Breeders, but in that, they’ve updated it to make it a bit more current. I like the fuzzed out riffs, almost drowned out by the strength of the vocal performance. Something in the execution or presentation feels effortlessly cool, so I’ll feel like I’m just transported back to my teenage life, acting like I’m the next incarnation of Jordan Catalano (though I was more Dicky Barrett). If you’re looking for cool, it’s here, so be sure to grab Sunset Sea Breeze via Paisley Shirt Records/Meritorio Records.

Transy Warhol Drop Afterglow Single

Austin outfit Transy Warhol have been dubbed the next Big Boys, taking up the torch passed through acts like Big Bill and others. But, while the punk side is there, it’s fleshed out on this fresh single in an artier, almost melodic fashion. The vocals have a bit of gruffness, but they’re curled into warm croon that very much feels like it could be the sound of a number of 80s post punk acts. I like the frantic nature of the guitars, stabbing at the speakers with this angular sharpness that really gets the blood flowing, so keep an eye out on this lot as they’ll be releasing their debut Control later this year!
