The Bankees Have a New Single

After a brief hiatus, The Bankees, returned last year with new music, and here we are with the band still pushing forward with new tunes. Their latest single has an understated feel, with the guitars twanging in the back behind the vocal performance. Those vocals carry a slight affected twang, almost drawl, allowing the band to spill syllables over into the next…all the while the drums bang on and keep pushing the tempo. Careful listens reveal a slight post-punk edge to the songwriting, so who knows what direction the band is heading…but we know we’ll be anxiously waiting.

Another One From Gruff Rhys

Hey just last month I was excited to share news of old favorite Gruff Rhys putting out a new solo album this summer. Today I am again pleased to share with you another new single from his forthcoming album with a video for “Limited Edition Heart”. Similar to the last track I shared, this one again has a very lounge act vibe to it with the always comforting and soothing vocals of Gruff. This might go down as one of my most played albums of the year.

This track, along with 9 others, will be available on an LP entitled Babelsbergdue out on June 8th via Rough Trade Records.

Lowly Return with New Tune

Last year, one of my personal favorite albums was Heba from the Danish group Lowly. And while we might not have a new album right around the corner, the group have shared this stellar new single in preparation for their May US invasion. I feel like the first minute and a half is really just toying with listeners, setting the mood, but pulling back just a touch until the song’s unleashed. From there, the band rise off into a blissed out pop horizon; it’s rhythmically propulsive, pulling you completely within the track with dense studio production. Here’s hoping the group keep up the good work with more likeminded tracks.

Enjoy the New Single from Being Dead

Austin’s Being Dead just crept upon my radar, but I’m really excited to be on notice about this new duo. On Friday they just dropped this ridiculously infectious new single, “Wild Man.” The track has this carefree indifference, an almost childlike playfulness, though you can hear roots in psych and folk…just performed with an enthusiastic stomp. While you can’t help but fall in love with the lead tune on the single, the flip side “Life Between Leafs” offers a glimpse of another side of the group…bedroom pop with the slightest hint of oddity hanging in the balance. Go on, give the single a stream.

Brand New Fake Your Own Death

San Fran’s Fake Your Own Death have been pretty prolific as of late, dropping EP after EP, single after single, and they’re not letting up. Today they unleashed this brand new tune from a forthcoming EP, slated for release later this year. The group bleed elements of propulsive psychedelia with washes of shoegaze, reminding us all just how similar the genres can be at times. At times, this track seems like a more goth version of Fugiya & Miyagi, at least in the way the rhythm section keep the pace; they constantly push the issue, contrasting against the stark vocal deliveries. This is a fine addition to an already stacked back-catalog; we’ll keep you posted as more news drops about this forthcoming release.

Brand New High Rise Finale

High Rise Finale first came to my attention because it’s a new project from Matt Bailey of The Salient Braves, who I adore. Of course, this project has some similarities, especially in the lyrical styling, but it’s a much more electronic adventure. He’s collaborating with Neil Ritchie, who helped produce some of his other work, and together they’ve just released this rad new tune. I dig how the synth work seems to elaborate or emphasize the syllables delivered by Bailey. Plus, the middle section of instrumentals shows just how carefully the group have crafted their electronic sounds. It’s pop music from the future, brought back to warm you up today.

Premiere: RG Lowe Drops New Single + Release Show (2/2)

Last year RG Lowe stepped out of the limelight of Balmorhea to begin crafting an R&B influenced album, Slow Time, which was met with rave reviews. He’s already back with a brand new single for Western Vinyl, and you can stream the A-side of the release below. You’ll marvel at the power of his voice, and delight in the little guitar lines moving just beneath the front of the mix. To celebrate the release of the single, RG Lowe will be playing a ridiculously stacked bill over at Sahara Lounge. His labelmate Caroline Says will be playing, along with perennial ATH favorites Taft and Batty Jr. Plus, it’s an early show, so you can roll right over after that work happy hour; Doors open at 7:30, with music kicking off at 8. Brand New Tune from I Was a King

If anything, I’m a pretty loyal listener, but being a fan of I Was a King has always been easy. They craft this beautiful mixture of heavy-ish indie rock and power-pop, and their sound seems ever evolving. This track relies more on the indie rock side of things, filled by crashing cymbals and distorted guitars grumbling in the distance. But, the smooth melody of the vocals cuts right through the noise, balancing the track in the most perfect manner. They even include some extra flourishes, such as the faint echo of children’s voices (at least that’s what it sounds like to me) near the 2 minute mark. This is a band that no longer needs to experiment or dabble in genres…they’re building their own sound, and I couldn’t be happier. The new single drops digitally on Friday with an album to follow later this year.

Something Special from HOLY

The new single from Sweden’s HOLY seems intent on frightening you, elevating a slight bit of noise from the get-go. But, if you endure, you’ll be rewarded with the beautifully revelation of the balladry draped atop a piano backbone. Eventually, electronics and drums enter the picture, continuing the song’s natural build; it’s like building a beautiful tower of pop, one floor at a time. There’s a brief interlude in the midsection, which gives way for a slightly grittier vocal performance that eventually meets up with the more polite voice from the song’s early minutes. Seriously stunned by how beautiful this is; look for All These Worlds Are Yours on January 26th via PNKSLM Recordings.

Vansire Return With a Hit

When Minnesota based Vansire release a new song, you can be sure the ATH boys will be posting it. What’s most impressive to me, is how the band can manage to reinvent themselves in the dream pop genre with each and every song they send us. Take for example this new single “Halcyon” which brings more of a Mac Demarco meets chillwave vibe to it. I can assure you this band will continue to gain popularity and will be a household name in the indie world soon. When’s that full length dropping dudes?
