If you’re like me, and you see the holidays as a long slog through social anxieties instead of rest, though you wish you could make your brain think otherwise, then perhaps turn on this bright new Clear Coast single. These German lads have this sound that’s built somewhere between New Order pop radio tendencies and early 2000s indie rock; it’s a wash with synths and catchy melodies. In summation, its just an energetic bop that really helps you put one foot after the other, giving you a little bit of strength to push on through. I love when a pop tune walks that fine line of dreaminess and hope, so if that’s your need, it’s right below!

Public Health Release Still Too Late Single

Somewhere out in Philly, Alex Moxam’s sitting in a darkened room, working on new material for his Public Health project. I imagine that there’s either a candle or a cigarette burned to the butt with ash (though I hope not because the band is called Public Health!), and Alex is just plugged into his four track, strumming these deeply emotional riffs. On the surface, things seem a little light, flourishes of ambiance leaking into the recording. Suddenly, it all comes together, and the guitars light up, with Alex reaching out to you with an intimate vocal performance. Ultimately, it feels like something David Berman might have left us, something personal and long-lasting. Give a spin.

Ted Tyro Release Devil Single

If you like your rock n’ roll with a little wiggle and groove, you need to latch onto Kentucky’s Ted Tyro. Their latest single has the band snaking through these post-punk grooves, sort of slinking their way through these funky little rhythms that ultimately make the song a bit more playful than it might seem to outsiders. That’s one of the lovely things here, as the group aren’t just frantically pushing angular riffs and hook-laden rhythms, instead choosing to kind of incorporate this sort of melodic mantra in the middle that really rewards time and time again. Catch on to this cool before the grown-ups take it away!

Dreams on Tape Share 1999 Single

Jake Benfant is still working on the finishing touches to Tomorrow’s Unknown, the new EP for his Dreams on Tape project, and with that, he’s given us another peek into what’s in store. This track feels a lot like its pulling from Julian Casablancas solo record, texturing these cavernous electronic pieces atop one another, letting the vocals hang heavily coated in the middle of it all. There’s this sort of heartbeat to the way the song pulses and moves up and down with those melodic vocals, giving the track this sort of dark pop lifeblood. Give it a listen while we wait on the new EP to finally get here!

Packs Share Abalone Video

The last time I caught Packs was when they blew through Austin with Good Morning; we all shared the legendary Armadelo, though that footage sadly didn’t make it into the band’s new video. This track, a brand new single for Fire Talk/Royal Mountain, features the group’s knack for weaving these slow-burning riffs that snake through your speakers, with little background nuances sliding into the fray to bring in the full-band effect following their stripped down Woah EP. Definitely excited to see what’s in store for the group going forward, as they’ve clearly had a productive season, which sounds like its already paying dividends.

Dart Trees Share New Single

Ottawa outfit Dart Trees must be doing something extremely right, as the group recently got Hannah Judge of fanclubwallet to help out with the production on their new EP. You can hear how easily someone could slide into the band, as the vocal delivery alone radiates this sense of indifferent cool, detailing the struggles of an Ottawan resident, likely being blamed on mayor Jim Watson. In the instrumentation you have sort of a light bit of sort of bedroom punk; it’s got a heavy strum and thumping drum work, all of it allowing for the song to stride forward with a sense of haphazard hipness. We’ll keep you posted when more details from their EP arrive!

The Fours Share New Single

The Fours popped up on my radar earlier this year as they prepared the release of Misadventure. But, having just dropped that LP a few months ago, they’re already back with a brilliant bit of rock n’ roll for you to consume. This tune seems like it’s a study on early Jonathan Richman; it’s a no-frills rock approach, just driving heavy rhythms through your speakers, with a sort of updated feel to it. Something in the vocals still holds onto that pop sentiment, never straying too far from the song’s center. If you like your jams steady, catchy and cool, then you’re going to want to keep an eye out for the group’s new LP Shaking and Moving, coming soon via World of Birds Records.

H. Hawkline Drops Suppression Street

It amazes me when people will fawn over certain artists and completely ignore other craftsmen of equal or greater talents, like H. Hawkline. We’ve got a new single from his forthcoming record, Milk for Flowers, illustrating both the blossoming craft in the musicianship, as well as the wordplay that indicates the personal nature of the album itself. I love the line “I paint my face for everyone I meet,” and you begin to wonder if we’ll ever truly get to know the inner workings of songwriter Huw Evans. His longtime collaborator Cate le Bon also has a hand in production on the record, and we’re all the better for it. Milk for Flowers is available March 10th via Heavenly Recordings.

Blue Canopy Deliver Bright Spot

Considering it is unseasonably warm here in Texas, though quite nice, I’m still looking for some sunny day pop to squeeze into my daily playlist, like this new Blue Canopy. This project is helmed by Alex Schiff up in Portland, who was one of the songwriters for Modern Rivals. Guitars twist and churn at the get go, waiting for the percussive element to slide its way into the picture; it creates this natural bob of the head, bouncing with the snappy drum hits. Schiff’s vocals have this wistfulness to them, adding to the dreamy textures applied throughout the track, intermingling with the jangly bounce. Fun way to start out a Thursday, no?

The Tubs Share Dead Meat Single

As if the Tubs hadn’t made a statement with their debut EP, it looks like their new album for Trouble in Mind is going to take their sound to the next level. Today’s new single is this quick gasoline fueled punch, or so it might seem at first. When the song first spits out of your speakers, the tune rushes in, offering a sort of matter of fact lecture via the vocal delivery. But, while the guitars ring with a coated jangle, a new vocal decides to bring in a more concrete melody, accented by this little guitar noodling in this crystalline manner. A nice new jam for your Wednesday; Dead Meat will be out on January 27th.
