ATX Premiere: Rain Collectors Release Single

rainyThere’s an old guard in the Austin music scene, filled with bands who’ve been playing together for years.  But, at some point the youngsters in town are going to take over, which is where we find Mr. Santiago and Ms. Blair, the duo working together as Rain Collectors.  Both artists have their own acts, Growl and AMA, respectively, but they step outside of these two projects to craft gentle folk music together.  Their new single relies upon very few lyrics, choosing instead to revolve the emotional pull around the tune’s structure, filling in empty space with piano and drums to add extra textures to the track.  For those worried about when the talent in Austin will run out, rest assured, there’s new territory being explored by the young guard, and Rain Collectors is one of those acts to keep an eye on; look for a new EP later this year. 

Black Twig Cover Venom

blakieIt seems, to me anyways, that a great deal of bands cover one another nowadays, so it’s a nice touch that Black Twig has opted to go all the way back to Venom‘s 1981 catalog to cover “In League with Satan.” They’ve removed the demonic touches of the original, choosing to favor the smoothed out heavy-folk the band have been working with since their last album, Heliogram.  They’re offering up this cover as part of a single they’re releasing with label Soliti this Friday, also offering some redux versions of previously released tracks.  It’s a different beast lurking here, but one you’ll love all the same.

Little Something Different from Moon Honey

mooneyIt gets pretty easy to get caught up in the traditional tropes of modern indie pop, or any modern pop genre for that matter.  But, when I caught this new single from Moon Honey, I thought things sounded a wee bit different.  For starters, they don’t really seem to go directly for the hook that’s apparent in a lot of tracks these days, pulling back and letting that magic come naturally via the song’s power.  It makes the tune much more durable, as opposed to tired. Nothing new on the recording front, just great tunes, so enjoy this note.

Dreamy Track from Weeknight

weekIf you’re looking for escapism via your musical listening, then you’re in luck if you turn on this new single from Weeknight.  The tune has this dark haunting quality, using jagged guitar chords to burst through the dense shadow of the track.  Sure, it falls in line with the nostalgic movement towards recreating the JAMC sound, but I’m impressed by the fact that it’s done with only two hands at the helm. This New York duo will release this new single on April 21st via Dead Stare Records, but you can stream the track below right now; I suggest you do!

Fresh Tune from Jeremy Jay

jeremy-jayI’m always one to rave about Jeremy Jay, and the more music he leaks out from his new projects, the more impressed I am with his growth as a songwriter.  There’s a really crisp quality about his vocal recordings on this new single; it’s something that wasn’t as present on his earliest work, though it’s much appreciated.  You’ll find that the song is this really careful little piece based around minimal guitar and piano lines, providing an intimacy to your listening experience that pulls you into the track emotionally. This single will be featured on Jeremy’s upcoming record, with more details on that boat to follow soon.

ATX Premiere: Yuma Release New Single

10614068_754453231278506_2042911533_nYuma have been around for a bit, but they’re here with their first hint that 2015 could be a big year for the band, graciously allowing us to premiere their first single.  “The Fire” really has two sides two it; it opens with this grandiose pop structure, careful layering crisp vocals over a slow chord progression.  But, then the song takes a turn, blasting into a blissful version of shimmering dream pop.  Melodies soar and the band rolls towards a soft close of the track, having carried you on a journey through varying realms of pop music.  You should help the band record more great songs in 2015 by buying the single HERE.  Look for the band to have more new tunes coming your way very soon.

Did You Check Out the Big Harp Single?

harpLast week, Big Harp released this great little single, and we got caught running behind the show, so I didn’t get a chance to toss it up.  But, better late than never, amiright? There’s really two things working for this tune…one is that the song revolves around this indifferent vocal approach akin to Rural Alberta Advantage; it’s like a little Southern drawl drawn out in its own fashion.  Also…there’s a delightfully bright chorus that’s perfectly juxtaposed to the verses, so that it grabs the listener.  It all wraps up in under 2 minutes, so you’ll be able to play it again and again before you get too tired.  Look for this track on their new 7″ via Fat Possum on March 10th.

This Twist Single Has Perfect Timing

twitsIf you’re outside of Austin reading this, I’ll apologize for being whiny, but the weather here’s pretty miserable.  Rain, cold…so un-March. But, with shitty weather comes fitting music to provide an escape.  On the new single from Twist, the track opens with little more than guitar and vocals; it doesn’t pick up immensely, though it does pull in some electronic beats to fill in the sound.  For me, it’s the perfect storm to match that going on outside my window at the moment, providing a dense bit of pop that’s both calming and unsettling.  No words on a release anytime soon, but at least we’ll have this track.

ATX Spotlight: Lowin Kick Out Another Jam

LowinWe gotta support the ATX this time of year, and what better way to do it than tossing out this new tune from Lowin.  On their latest tune, there’s really two sides to offer up, both equally engaging for audiences.  Sara Houser builds a driving rhythm with the rest of the band, her voice just below a powerful wail.  Carry on beyond the 2.5 minute mark and you’ll see the band switch things, offering up a more swollen version of indie rock, building with chords that wait to crash down on the listener. It’s just another reason to keep an eye out for their Royal Jelly EP, which hits on April 7th.

Let’s Welcome Back Yonatan Gat

jonatanOkay, so Yonatan Gat hasn’t left us just yet, but it appears his old project Monotonix is dead and gone; they’ll be sorely missed, especially considering their riotous live shows, so we’ve got to look to Yonatan to pick up where the band left off.  This instrumental tune should give you a good view at what he’s been working on, providing listeners with strong guitar play and what seems like a perceived restraint; I know that Gat will unleash this song as entirely different beast live.  Those of you interested in his work will be excited to know he’s working on a pretty extensive tour of the States, including a date here in Austin at Hotel Vegas on January 31st…along with a return in March for SXSW. Look for his new album, Director, on March 3rd via Joyful Noise Recordings.
