Sprawling Pop Rock from Gang of Youths

gangofyouthsOne of the great things about SXSW, despite the whining of DIIV, is that you get to make communications across the globe you wouldn’t have made otherwise.  Such is how I met our friend Meg, who pointed me to Gang of Youths, who will soon be relocating to the USA.  They’ve just released the following single, which is reminiscent of acts like Local Natives, though this group shows a bit more restraint in their songwriting, holding back where others have gone on to explode.  I like what the group is doing, and I hope you do as well; keep an eye out for them, as they’ll be making their way to the States very soon to warm your ears.

New Music from The Ocean Party

theoceanpartyMy affair with The Ocean Party comes via my adoration with Velcro; both bands share member/guitarist, Curtis Wakeling.  The group is gearing up to release their next album, Split, which will feature a more shared role in the songwriting duties for all members of the band.  Just listen to the way the guitar chords wrap themselves around the vocals on this first single, “Split.”  There’s a subtlety to the track, breathing beautiful guitar-monies throughout the tune.  I’m excited to hear the whole effort, as I’d like to see what the rest of the band bring to the table.  Guess we’ll all find out on September 27th, the release date, but for now, this’ll do.

Another New Hit from Dent May

Dent MayI’ll be the first to admit that I’ve been on the fence since Dent May changed things up, musically.  But, having listened to his latest song, I think I’m starting to come on board with his new sound.  For one, the guitars here are definitely hitting the spot; they’ve got that stutter-step jangle like some early Orange Juice hits.  Then, Dent calmly swoons in with his casino troubadour croon; it all fits pretty nicely together.  This is the second single from Dent May’s forthcoming record, Warm Blanket, which has an August 27th release date from Paw Tracks.

Old School Feeling Pop from Society

societyWay back in my youth, and probably some of yours as well, there were artists spinning blends of pop around hip-hop breaks and samples, then mixing them with various orchestral arrangements to thicken the sound.  There were certain records from that period that still haunt my computer playlist.  I get a similar feeling when I listen to Society, the project of James Girdler, who seemed reluctant to come out into the open after his first single was so well received.  Listening here, it’s definitely British, definitely enchanting. Let it take you to the weekend.

Hope You Didn’t Forget Architecture in Helsinki

archIt’s been awhile since we last heard from Aussie’s Architecture in Helsinki, but good things come to those who wait.  In the last few days, the band has popped their head up with a catchy new single that should definitely make the end of your Wednesday a good one.  I figured since we’re all taking the day off to celebrate 4th of July festivities tomorrow, we’d leave you with this one last track to get you smiling on your way out the door.  This is the band’s latest, but no word yet on when a full-length will come your way…we’ll keep you posted as news comes our way.

Slow Jam from Diarrhea Planet

diarrheaUp until now, the music from Diarrhea Planet has been heavy-hitting, which I definitely enjoy, but it’s nice to see them slow things down a bit here on their latest single.  Don’t fret, they allow for some sonic eruptions, but only after slowly building their way up towards those moments.  I think it adds a different dynamic to their songwriting, and in doing so, they’ve made their upcoming album a more intriguing affair.  That record, I’m Rich Beyond Your Wildest Dreams, arrives on August 20th, just a few weeks after you can catch them here in Austin at the Parish.

Austin Spotlight: The Whalers Ready New LP

battleshipsartI’m really excited by the leaps and bounds that The Whalers have made in the past couple of years, and I think their latest single really demonstrates the growth, providing us with one of their best tunes to date.  The band does a great job blending mild bits of Americana with modern indie rock flare, adding both energy and their own unique touches.  Their new record will be available to the masses come this October, and as expected, it’s shaping up to be one hell of a listen.  And if you’re local, the group plays with our boys Tiger Waves on July 6th over at the Belmont.

Fresh New Music from Jeremy Jay

JeremyJayLondonTreesEver since he released the Airwalker EP and  A Place Where We Could Go I’ve been an adamant fan of Jeremy Jay and his music.  But, he’s been quiet as of late, waiting almost two full years since his last release to put together a new album.  According to an email, part of that seems to be that he’s been searching for the absolute perfect place to record his music.  Our first taste of new music from Jeremy already seems destined for greatness, with an old 80s warehouse sound and Jay’s cool vocal delivery.  His new record should come our way later this year via K Records, with a single slated for release prior to that date; for now, he’s graciously sent us this incredible tune to share with you all. Do yourself a favor if you’re new to Jeremy, and go revisit his entire catalogue. It’ll be a day well spent.

Brand New Tunes from I Was a King

iwasakingIf you’ve followed this web site for some time, then you’ll surely be aware of my unabashed love for I Was a King.  Through three albums, they’ve continued to amaze me with their pop tunes, and today there are signs that they’re progressing even further.  They’ve got a new single coming out soon, and they’ve allowed us to share one of the tracks with you all, so we’re doing just that.  I’ve chosen “Oslo Share,” which displays the band working with their excellent vocal harmonies, providing music that continues to leave an impression, even as the song comes to an end.  IWK will be working on a new album in September, and I guarantee it’s going to be amazing.

Rock n’ Roll from Hunx and His Punx

hunxpunx_smallIt seems like Hunx has an agenda set up for his future: rock it out with Hunx and His Punx and play garage rock ballads with Hunx. Hardly Art is gearing up to release Street Punk on July 23rd, and since it’s a HHP album, it definitely is a departure from Hairdresser Blues.  From the opening moment on the lead single, you can feel the ferocity that’s about to ensue, but while it may have a heavier leaning sound, there’s still that elemental hook that Hunx always maintain.  It might be brief and fleeting, but it’s definitely still Hunx at the center of it all, not to mention the song alone is an ode to bad skin, so we’ve still got the humor I love.  Looks like we’ve got a rocking affair coming our way!
