Cool Sounds Share Like That Single

Whatever caused the shift in sonics for Dainis Lacey, we’re reaping the rewards on the listening end, particularly when it comes to the title track from the new Cool Sounds LP. It’s interesting that this is also the record’s closing track, as it seems to set us up for this sort of climb atop the mountain, only to find solace in this heavy pop masterpiece. There’s little shining diamonds in the corners, twinkling notes here and there splashing up to mix in with the pulse; it just reeks of cool for some reason, perfectly cinematic in its presentation. Like That is out on October 7th via Chapter Music.

The Persian Leaps Share Alright Alright Single

On the first single from the forthcoming Machines for Living, you got a glimpse at the purest of power-pop from The Persian Leaps. This time around, their latest single’s got a bit more of a heavier vibe; the riffs that rock throughout almost feel like a demonic rock-a-billy fuzz, albeit one accented by melodic vocals. Honestly, it’s like you decided to throw early Queens of a Stone Age into a ring with Teenage Fanclub, just looking for the sounds to pick a fight with one another; I’m dubbing it power-rock. With the infectious refrain of “Alright Alright,” the band have another way to entice you to give Machines for Living a chance; it drops on October 7th.

European Sun Share There Is No News Single

While we patiently await the follow-up to their self-titled debut album, European Sun have decided to tease us with a new single that will come on their new LP, When Britain Was Great. Personally, I love the storytelling aspect of Steven Miles lyrical work; it’s something that just seems so simplistic in nature, yet stuns in this presentation. Behind Miles you get the rollicking swagger of accomplished musicianship from Rob Pursey, Ian Button and Amelia Fletcher; it’s got a mixture of punk flavor with that sort of ramshackle flare…though we all know with these songwriters, nothing ever just gets thrown together. Plus, I love the idea of a world where there is no news, where we can just breathe and be. Guess we’ll have to wait until the new LP to see if that’s the case! High Heavens Share 100 Bullets Single

Austin’s High Heavens is a band nearly 30 years in the making, but one that is just now coming together; longtime friends Ernest Salaz and Nick Pellicciotto first met in 96 while working on various other musical assignments. But, as of 2017, they’ve been crafting this cinematic darkness, landing somewhere between Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen, like an elegant lounge act built on the backbone of heavy rock n’ roll. The entire five minutes of this tune walk a fine line between lounge pop and brooding mystery, which makes us really excited to hear where their music will go…hoping a follow-up to Springtime Don’t Call is on its way.

Josephine Odhil Shares New Single, Familiars

I’ve been trying to kind of get to the darker corners of the indie world, which is where I stumbled upon Josephine Odhil and her latest single, “Familiars.” It’s hard to categorize, though you can hear touchstones like classic female pop groups or the more recent trends like Broadcast/Stereolab. I think her vocals are superb, kind of foggy, but hitting just the perfect melodic touch just as the song pulses underhandedly. Definitely easy to find yourself lost in Odhil’s world, which I’m looking forward to hearing more of, as she’s set to drop her debut album at some point next year.

 

Dehd Release New Bonus Single/Video

I’d likely consider myself a huge Dehdhead, as in Dehd, not “the Dead.” Today, the band just released a brand new bonus track they’ve added to their recent LP, Blue Skies…and added a video to boot! Here, the guitar tones had me immediately, it was the first thing that I gravitated towards. That then gets punctuated by these “oohs” that highlight the band’s melodic leanings, only to halt them before screaming into a raucous closing. Plus, the video reminds me of old school Good Charlotte, where the whole gang’s together in slo-mo having a blast in friendship and riding around (but on cycles not lowriders). Enjoy!

I Was a King Release Lo Pressure

Some bands don’t age well, but for my money, I Was a King seem to be aging like the finest of wines; I feel like everything from the forthcoming Follow Me Home has been nothing short of endearing, with every note hitting just the right chord. This brand new single doesn’t waste any time, hitting things right away with this vocal that seems hurried to maximize the melodic nature. Once things settle in, it’s a steady trip around handclaps and the perfect strum, with the vocal urgency always intact. I feel like this song could be the one I play again and again for the duration of this year. Follow Me Home is out on October 7th, and it looks like we’ll all have to get the physical copy on Discogs…as both versions are sold out! Hear why below!

Spirit Ghost Release No Future Single

Austin’s Spirit Ghost have been banging around town for nearly a good while now, and with their new single, it seems the perfect way to (hopefully) move into the Fall. The guitars are hanging on the cusp of power pop and surf rock, with the steady thump from the rhythm section offering up the perfect driving vibe. Despite the poppy tendency bubbling up, the song deals with human frustration and running on the proverbial hamster wheel of life, working hard and never really going anywhere. A nice little mixture of gloom and fun, wrapped up into a song that hope has you tapping your toes a bit.

Tin-ear Share Fling Straw Man

Tin-ear is a band we’ve consistently been raving about for the last month or so; they’ve got one last single to share with us before we get to hear the entirety of Cadastral Maps. I just love how it feels cacophonous from the get-go, swirling noise just ringing in my ears, though not in an abrasive fashion. There’s actually something soothing in the vocal work, a calm in the middle of this great musical storm, perhaps signaling the band’s allegiance to a mixture of twee and avant-emo. Please stick around to the very end of it all, as a glorious burst of emphatic joy awaits you. Cadastral Maps is out on Friday via Gentle Reminder Records.

Oceans Share New Single, High

The lockdown, while still looming in our thoughts, brought about a lot of creativity for artists, and it seems to have spun Australia’s Oceans in a slightly new direction. Now operating as a full band, there’s a bit of promise on the horizon, and I mean that in more of a metaphorical sense. You can still feel the darkened edges that were present on the Come So Far EP, but there’s an electricity that seems to be dashing through on this brand new single (the first as a full band). For starters, the time stamp has it at just over 2 minutes, meaning the band have to apply a frantic nature to it; you can hear that in the drum’s pounding away and the stabbing guitar lines that knife their way in and out. Still, that dreamy vocal seems to rise and crest, just as the guitars hit with more enthusiasm, blasting you with a cool breeze of delightful melody.
