Bright Post-Pop Track from Skint & Demoralised

artworks-000040270891-ocqx0i-t500x500Not going to lie, the name of the band, Skint & Demoralised, is throwing me off a bit, but I can’t get the group’s latest B-Side out of my head.  The vocal delivery is spot on for what the band has done in the past, often using spoken word vocal approaches, though that’s not what you’ve got here.  I like the way the guitars seem to take an angular fade out, while the drums provide a dance-heavy beat to get your groove on.  You can find this catchy number on the group’s newest single, Breakfast at Sylvia’s, which just came out, so you’ll be glad to get your hands on such a hit.

Sweeping Pop from Seatraffic

TempoOfRegret_artworkI’ve written about my love for Seatraffic before, and as the band continues to work hard on their single series, I’ve got another great tune to share with you.  I like the expansiveness of this track, using a trickling bit of keyboard to allow room for the floating harmonies to move in and out of the track.  Vocals are slow moving, matching the pace that the music (and artwork) emits.  They’ve also got an accompanying video for the song that you can view HERE.  Don’t forget to stop by the group’s BANDCAMP page to pick up all their new singles by kindly donating what you can spare.

Weekend Gets Mellow–Sort Of

weekOkay, so 24 hours later and this track is probably old news, but you can’t escape the fact that it’s simply just a great song.  While the first Weekend effort was simply noisy, it looks like the next effort is going to perhaps go a little softer, maybe.  Yes, there’s that dark sense of post-punk brooding from the start, but a little bit into the track and the guitar begins to soften the approach, cutting in and out of the background.  And when you hear the vocals, it’s a nice change to hear the clarity, though the affecting quality still remains.  The band will release their second LP, Jinx, via Slumberland Records on July 23rd–get ready to rave about this release.

Jam Out with Oberhofer

oberhoferI love the rich pop music that Oberhofer created, not to mention the live show they put on at ACL this past year.  So, with that in mind, I’m excited they’ve already geared up to release a new EP, titled Notalgia; it comes out on April 23rd via Glassnote.  It’s steady guitar pop when it opens, with the machine gun drumming pushing the pace forward, but the chorus is where the song truly takes flight.  It bursts forth with ringing guitars and accompanying arrangements that really display the profound pop exploration of the group.  I won’t complain about hearing this song a dozen or so times today, and neither should you!

Hypnotic Electro-Pop from pacficUV

Pacific-UV-Pacific-UvI always have this preconceived idea about Athens, Georgia, at least in referencing the city’s musical history.  But, with bands like Twin Tigers and now pacificUV coming into their own, perhaps my ideas will begin to change a bit.  This tune has a hypnotic electro beat that just grooves the whole way through.  You’ll also find some rad interplay between male and female vocalists that really ups the ante on mass appeal.  The band has a new record titled After the Dream You Are Awake, which comes out on May 14th via Mazarine Records…but if you can’t wait, they have a sampler HERE with a few new tracks, as well as some of their other career retrospective tunes.

New Pop from Marmalakes

557990_10151464720897210_989583134_nAustin’s music scene isn’t the easiest to break into, let alone stick around in, but Marmalakes have been holding their own for some time.  What bodes well for the group is this ridiculously great new single that they just released over the weekend.  It starts with this bouncing bass line that gives great tempo to the group’s blend of folk and pop.  Personally, I like the changing in tempo that comes in and out of the song, especially the quick to soft to quicker that closes this jam out.  One of Austin’s best acts just keeps getting better. Get in on it now.

Fuzzy Pop from The Laurels

Lyndal-Irons_Laurels_IMG_8056.111030We’re getting close to the Austin Psych Fest, and with that we’ve got news regarding one of the great acts that will be making their way into town: The Laurels.  You know how we love Australia, so it’s only fitting that we spread some love on this Sydney group; they’ll be releasing their new album, Plains, on April 16th.  You’ll find the new single here quite a gem; it has a quality that walks the fine line between psych rock and regulation pop music.  The vocals seem to float away, there’s some fuzzy guitar playing, but the rhythm section is solid through and through, especially the drumming. Now’s the time to start getting ready for Psych Fest folks.

Mas Musica de Pure X

artworks-000040620860-sbur4m-t500x500Personally, I’m really excited about the upcoming effort from Pure X, Crawling Up the Stairs.  While I really enjoyed their last effort, I’m thinking they might be mixing things up a bit, expanding their sound.  If you listen to this new single, you’ll definitely have to agree, as the vocals alone indicate a larger focus on that aspect; I felt like it was used as an instrument the last go round.  Still, it’s got this drifting quality that enchants listeners, though that’s juxtaposed to the gruff quality on some of the vocal delivery, which might be off-putting (even grating), depending upon who you ask.  All in all, this new single indicates a band refining and expanding their sound; on May 14th we’ll all get a chance to hear the full collection of tunes.

More New Music from Velcro

30916641-1I love bands who work hard to perfect their sound.  In doing so, that usually benefits us, as we get song after song of a band making their way in the musical world.  One of my favorite acts working their way up the ladder is Velcro.  It seems like they’ve always got a tune to release, and I think “Bottle Shop” really finds the band making their home.  The pace of the track is slow, with Curtis taking the stage early with his vocals being placed atop gently progressing guitar chords.  Then a female counterpart softly joins him just before the track fades out.  If you love what these guys are doing, and I do, then keep an eye out as they’ll have a new full-length coming to you later this year.

New Punk Jam from Wire!

Wire-Change-Becomes-Us-608x608I won’t lie about my adoration for Wire; they’ve been the soundtrack to my life on and off for over a decade (yes, I was late to the party).  But, they’re revisiting some old tunes laying around, and this one sounds so good.  This jam has the perfect blend of pop warmth and steady punk pace-making that really indicated the band’s branching out.  You’ll find this gem on Change Becomes Us, which is filled with a bunch of tunes the group never got around to recording.  Glad they got it to us now; the new record comes out on March 25th.
