Ski Lodge Quietly Returns

A few years back, Ski Lodge was all the rage, but then things seemed to go quiet from Andrew Marr. Ever so often he pops up with a new single, just doing his own thing, writing for himself it seems..and me too. This new track is a bit of a move away from where he began, but it’s a beautiful place to find him, treading over that ground warmed by the likes of Hamilton Leithauser and other such powerful voices. Here things unfold gently, rising carefully, but never so far as to seem boisterous, crawling back beneath the mix. Lush arrangements abound, with sweeping strings, all of it building towards the cathartic release at the 2.5 minute mark. Not sure what the future holds here, or if there’s a planned release, but I’ll welcome a newly penned Marr tune any day.

New Diane Coffee Video & Single

Diane Coffee has new album entitled Internet Arms coming on April 19th via Polyvinyl Records and I’m excited for you all to hear his brand of quirky pop music. Prior to the release of his new album, Coffee is premiering this new video for his single “Like a Child Does”. The track itself is some catchy as hell, almost danceable pop music complete with ironic lyrics and spot on vocal delivery. You’ll also find a bit of joy in the video as Coffee plays on his own lyrics, imposing himself in several classic board games. Carry on good sir.

Promising New Single From Youth Sector

Brighton, UK based band Youth Sector just sent over this new single “Run” and I though it needed to be shared with the ATH community. I immediately loved the way these guys create this mixture of 80s rock like Devo with some nice and bright elements of Brit pop. For me, the band is really creating something unique with the blend of these two styles and I expect we’ll be hearing more about them soon. We’ll of course share more tunes as we get them.

Atmospheric Track From Heron

Pennsylvania based instrumental outfit Heron made a name for themselves back in 2017 with their impressive debut LP You Are Here Now. Not to go quietly into the night, the boys now have a new single called “Splashdown” to continue the hype train moving on their music. Those who know me, probably realize this track is perfect for me because it blends equal parts Appleseed Cast and Explosions in the Sky. Both two of my all time favorites.

New Music from Nick Garrie

Nick Garrie released the stunning The Nightmare of JB Stanislas back in 1969, but went mostly quiet, despite how revered his work was at the time. Luckily, Elefant got him to reissue it, which led to a few more albums on various labels in the following years. Now, word has come that we might see a new LP in 2019 via Tapete Records….at the very least we have a new single. His music seems timeless, even now, gentle and soothing, with the focus on great wordplay. It’s going to be hard for you to listen to this song and not feel someone pulling at your insides, tugging every emotion out of you.

Brand New Pop from Azure Blue

Having already released the Fast Falls the Eventide LP earlier this year, Azure Blue is back with another sensational electro-pop single to warm your hearts. The synth work throughout definitely nods to 80s soundtrack scores, though with perhaps a heavier bend on pushing the natural hooks. But, you don’t have success until you combine those hooks with Tobias Isaksson’s voice; he has this naturally hushed calm that rides atop these songs, charming passersby from the get-go. No word on when exactly the new album will hit, but we’ve been promised it will be ready by next year via Matinee Recordings.

Pop Hit from Rat Fancy

Rat Fancy have graced our pages many a time before, and I even included them in my suggested acts to catch last year at SXSW. They just dropped a new tune with a heavy-handed pop vibe that should jump on your radar today. The riffs and bass lines are gritty, almost grungy, though Dianna always has this polished glint to the way she releases her vocals. It’s hard to turn away from the hooks they craft, letting waves of pop sensibility bash you over the head…not a bad thing in my book. No word on a new release, but let’s hope something new comes our way in 2019.

New Music from Gabriel Birnbaum

I’m probably most familiar with Gabriel Birnbaum due to his work in Wilder Maker, who I’ve written about quite a bit. Now, Gabriel is doing a little solo work, and he’s just released a track off his forthcoming LP. Going through this track repeated times, I’m drawn by the contrasting guitars, fighting with one another throughout. One guitar has this almost feathery strum, giving off a light-hearted vibe; the other guitar takes on a more forlorn tone, bending around Birnbaum’s voice at every turn. No word just yet on when the album will be finished, but what a wonderful first entry we have here.

New Indiepop from Nah

It’s a shame that my Best of Indiepop list is already up and running, as I’m sure I could squeeze in Nah somewhere in the mix. It begins with a fairly sugary opening, bubbling bass line and vocals from Estella to charm over those lightly jangling guitars. But, as the song continues, Sebastian jumps into the mix, proving himself the perfect foil to his musical partner; I love how his deeper tones contrast against the softer notes. The second track on the new single is equally as charming, much in the same fashion as the first, playing upon the vocal relationship of the two songwriters. New Jam from Soccer Cousins

Soccer Cousins have now released three singles, and they’re all pretty special. They dwell near the boundary line between indie rock and emo, but this new single has them sitting pretty firmly in the indie rock side, almost right next to the Thermals. The guitar notes bend around the lyrics, almost playfully teasing you. Then the “ba da ba ba bahs” enter with a more emphatic guitar ring in the chorus, and you’re absolutely hooked on it. This just goes to show you that in this end-of-year madness, there’s still some gems lurking, so don’t overlook this one.
