Julian Never Shares Ursuline Single

We are not too far off from the release of Pious Fiction, the new LP from Julian Never, thus we deserve one final single before it hits the streets. Right? This one gives us a slightly different glimpse at the craft, and most noticeably the voice, of Julian Elorduy. There’s something about the production here that gives Elorduy a more darkened croon, something almost haunting in his presence. The guitars are stripped back a bit, save for their little solo jaunt around the 2 minute mark, so the vocals are forced right up front, giving off this American gothic appeal to the tune. It’s nice to hear a slightly different twist on Julian’s work, only building our anticipation for Pious Fiction; it drops next Friday via Mt. St. Mtn.

Alison Eales (Butcher Boy) Announces Debut LP

I can’t imagine you not being a fan of Butcher Boy, so today’s news that Alison Eales will be releasing her debut solo LP should come as a surprise treat. Upon listen, the track almost seems like a purely vocal performance, a remarkable one at that. There’s a slight little bounce from the electronic work, albeit with subtlety so as not to overstep the front of the mix. You’ll also find backing vocals also buoying Eales, deepening the melodic nature. Lyrically, the song is an homage to Glasgow, though that homage finds the town both inspiring and troublesome. Looking forward to hearing how the whole of this LP shapes up; Mox Nox is out in March via Fika Recordings.

Frankie Rose Returns with Love as Projection

What great news to wake up to today! We’re going to get a new LP from Frankie Rose this year, courtesy of Slumberland Records. Today we’ve got the fresh new single from the record, and it’s a reminder of Frankie’s ability to blend melody into darker textures. This tune feels sparkly too, like the sun is shining on the keys creating this crystalline shimmer that drives the melody into the listeners ear. It’s nice to hear Rose completely indulge in a more electronic sound, yet seemingly still be linked to her accomplished past. Look for the new album, Love as Projection, to drop on March 10th.

The Hepburns Drop Who Cares

2023 is underway, and we’re already back on our indiepop kick, with this fresh new tune from Welsh outfit, the Hepburns. Jumping off immediately with this jangle adjacent springy bounce, the song moves quickly into delivering melody via the vocals from Matt Jones; I love the way he tends to drag out the last syllable with an extra blanket of cool. Plus, we get Estella Rosa of Nah (among other projects) doing some backing vocal work here, only thickening that sweet pot of pop. The tune hits out on trying to find a little meaning in the songwriting when everyone’s fighting for the crumbs on the indie rock table. Enjoy.

Razor Braids Share Nashville, Again Single

The year hasn’t quite picked up yet, so this new track from Razor Braids is the perfect way to slow roll your way into 2023. It’s a slow burner, almost like the last flames flickering out on a Winter fire; you’ll also get just the faintest hints of that sort of western guitar bending, snaking around the beautiful melodies the band have crafted here. Personally, there’s this great moment waiting for you at the 3 minute mark, the guitars feel heavier and there’s the slightest burst like a sputtering firecracker. Plus, if you dig it, the band have also attached a cover of Weezer’s “Buddy Holly” to go with this new single!

Sunsee Shares Fly By Single

Another song that I came across just as the year was wrapping up was this fresh single from New Zealand’s Sunsee; it’s the project of Hamish Berkers, favoring no genre, but crafting these dreamy soundscapes for escapism. Personally, I love the contrast between some of the sunnier guitar licks and the weighted tones of Berkers here, offering up this brilliant juxtaposition. Plus, there’s this far out middle meandering piece that just kind of lets the song spin off into a new world and stop abruptly. Give it a quick spin and reap your rewards.

Julian Never Shares Grassharp Single

These last few weeks have been hard on the underground pop scene, losing some incredible humans we all adored in some form or another. Some of those artists define the classic era of DIY indie rock to me, so its nice to hear folks like Julian Never reimagining those sounds and giving them a fresh spin with their work. On the band’s latest single, Julian Elorduy has this almost Lynchian vocal delivery, heavy and soulful, stretching to break out and be free. Behind him, the musical element feels very cinematic, little flourishes of ambiance and rising and falling, with a light strum holding the track’s gravitational center. If you’re as fascinated by what’s at play here as I am, be sure to grab the group’s Pious Fiction LP from Mt. St. Mtn. on January 13th.

Clear Coast Share Againiam Single

If you’re like me, and you see the holidays as a long slog through social anxieties instead of rest, though you wish you could make your brain think otherwise, then perhaps turn on this bright new Clear Coast single. These German lads have this sound that’s built somewhere between New Order pop radio tendencies and early 2000s indie rock; it’s a wash with synths and catchy melodies. In summation, its just an energetic bop that really helps you put one foot after the other, giving you a little bit of strength to push on through. I love when a pop tune walks that fine line of dreaminess and hope, so if that’s your need, it’s right below!

Public Health Release Still Too Late Single

Somewhere out in Philly, Alex Moxam’s sitting in a darkened room, working on new material for his Public Health project. I imagine that there’s either a candle or a cigarette burned to the butt with ash (though I hope not because the band is called Public Health!), and Alex is just plugged into his four track, strumming these deeply emotional riffs. On the surface, things seem a little light, flourishes of ambiance leaking into the recording. Suddenly, it all comes together, and the guitars light up, with Alex reaching out to you with an intimate vocal performance. Ultimately, it feels like something David Berman might have left us, something personal and long-lasting. Give a spin.

Ted Tyro Release Devil Single

If you like your rock n’ roll with a little wiggle and groove, you need to latch onto Kentucky’s Ted Tyro. Their latest single has the band snaking through these post-punk grooves, sort of slinking their way through these funky little rhythms that ultimately make the song a bit more playful than it might seem to outsiders. That’s one of the lovely things here, as the group aren’t just frantically pushing angular riffs and hook-laden rhythms, instead choosing to kind of incorporate this sort of melodic mantra in the middle that really rewards time and time again. Catch on to this cool before the grown-ups take it away!
