Brand New Music from Phantom Handshakes

I was super in love with No More Summer Songs, the debut LP from Brooklyn’s Phantom Handshakes; they’ve just returned with this little pop delicacy to sneak into your day. Listening through, the musical elements feel really dense, but in a certain manner, they stay out of the way, letting Federica’s voice sparkle in the front of the mix. Having spent a lot of time with the band’s work, this might be her best vocal performance; she has masterful control over the melodic tones, letting them hang in the air as the guitars rise from behind to support. Flat out, the band rips. Plus, all digital sales have proceeds going to Emergency.

Rose Mercie Share Sweet Place Video

I’m still pulling for Rose Mercie‘s new album to make some waves in the US this go round, and maybe this new single will do the trick for some folks. Obviously, the song flirts with the darkened corners of pop music, but I like the way it sort of manipulates the pace to work against our modern expectations. In a way, the drums roll across, but they seem to sort of bob and weave there, and the vocals ride that wave, like a lost ship at sea. In terms of the vocals, I love how there are added textural vocal layers added as the song progresses, adding a certain fullness to what’s at play in the song. Their new album Kieres Agua will be released by Jelodanti and Celluloid Lunch next week!

Blue Cove Share Here You Come Single

Chicago’s music scene has definitely been a hot place to find some great tunes the last few months, and here we are with this new track from Blue Cove. The band currently operate in the dream pop realm, toying with the more boisterous brand once the song hits the 2 minute mark; it explodes, almost seeming to raise the volume as the jangling guitar lines burst through your speakers. They never seem to lose sight of the hook, which inevitably seems to revolve around Steph Nikolas’ vocals. They’ve had a bunch of tunes float out, so keep your eyes peeled for news on an official release any day.

Maria Chiara Argiro Releases Greenarp Single

Some music you meet becomes immediately enchanting, something that seems rooted in the fantastical, like Maria Chiara Argiro’s latest single. When this new video begins, the song’s dwelling in the ethereal realm, which in its own right is striking. Slowly, the song begins to emerge with a little more pulse, as Argiro build’s little flourishing beats beneath the textured mix of her craft. In doing so, the dream realm is maintained, but there’s a little more lifeblood to it all, which comes in handy in convincing old curmudgeons like myself to spend a good amount of time. Still, I’ll happily play in the world Maria’s creating; I’m looking forward to the release of Forest City next week on Innovative Leisure.

Ben Woods Shares Hovering at Home Video

Strangely, as the summer comes, which is usually my heavy jam season, I’ve been mellowing, looking for more moving pieces, like this Ben Woods track. Ben just announced a new LP titled Dispeller, and I’m totally awe-struck by this lead single. It’s a combination of bedroom strumming and sampled noise used to structurally build the sound. There’s this slight tonal shift that gets me every time he drops it in; he’ll deliver two lines, then twist the tone into this slightly more melodic charm. Plus, every time the song builds into cacophony, it all seems to make perfect sense, only raising the bar on the modern trends of songwriting. Dispeller is out in July via Shrimper/Melted Ice Cream/Meritorio.

More Music from Guy Capecelatro III

Still going to quietly scream at the heavens until you all pay attention to Guy Capecelatro III; I’m here to share yet another single from the forthcoming Heading North Again. Something in his songwriting style here definitely feels nostalgic, lost somewhere between late 90s college rock and early stages of emo (in a good way!!). His voice feels pained at times, but so intimate, that its like he’s sitting next to you pouring out his heart throughout this single. Guy’s music just feels suited for those personal moments by yourself, solace for those in need. Heading North Again is out this Friday via Dromedary Records.

Tony Jay Shares Another Single from Hey There Flower

Recently we talked about how Tony Jay would be re-releasing Hey There Flower (originally on a small tape run via Paisley Shirt), and since a lot of folks haven’t heard the album, we’re here with another track that might turn you onto Mike Ramos’ songwriting. This particular track is a slow-burn, with the notes sort of hanging in the air like a bubble on the wind, floating endlessly into they disappear beyond you. Mike’s voice hangs deep inside the mix, like he’s singing to us from some dampened cavern, stirring your emotions as his voice drifts in and out of your consciousness. This track appears on the LP, which is out on vinyl on May 6th courtesy of Mt. St. Mtn; look for the band to hit the road with some dates this summer, including a run in July with our friend RE Seraphin.

There are some bands that just get you; they write songs that seem perfectly penned for your tastes; Films on Song is one such band…at least with this brand new single. It hangs on the cusp of post-punk stylings; you can easily hear the band on the fence about whether they should jump off and go into the shoegaze realm. But, they hold back, taking those ringing guitar strokes and bending them around the vocal melodies; it all feels heavy, like they’re carrying the burden of the world on their shoulders and trying to fill it with light. You’ll find this tune on the Sonatine EP, a split EP with their friend Work Wear.

Yawners Drop Brand New Single, Honey

In the first week of May, there will be a new Yawners LP out on the streets, and I’m totally in love with the band’s latest single, dropping before they hit up their European tour. Singer Elena Nieto wrote the track in English, then in Spanish, and now we’ve got a version that combines the two. Musically, this song hits you right in the pop punk gut, energetic and carefree from the instant you press play. There’s also a moment in this that feels like they’ve turned Glen Hasnard’s “Falling Slowly” into a pop rock tune (let me know if you hear it too, or if I’m loco!). Duplo, the new LP, will be out on May 6th via Big Scary Monsters.

Say Sue Me Drop To Dream Video

I love the sentiment of this new Say Sue Me track, with Sumi saying “I dreamed everyone was alive, and I came to think that there might be no end. One day everyone will come back and meet somewhere.” That feeling sort of pervades throughout the song, as the guitar work slightly dances in the mix, but the track seems to kind of flow back and forth like waters washing ashore during a calm in the sea. Something about it just feels nostalgic and reflective, but when the middle hits and the distorted guitar rips through the tune, it feels like the sun breaks in and shines that light where we all find ourselves as one, somewhere. The group release The Last Thing Left on May 13th via Damnably.
