Phantom Handshakes Drop Single with Swiss Portrait

We’ve been covering New York’s Phantom Handshakes for quite some time over here, but now they’ve turned us onto another artists, as they just dropped this catchy pop ditty with Edinburgh’s Swiss Portrait. This song works steadily on a solid beat, working that snare to its catchy best; the guitars swirl and jangle behind that, wrapping the track in this emphatic bit of jangling pop music. Federica’s vocals add the dreaminess you’re seeking, playing from the distance like some angelic whisper weaving in and out of the core of this track. Not sure if this is a one-off tune, or something larger at play, but we’ll keep you posted…for now just enjoy this hit.

Pamphlets Share Shut Tight Single

There was a demo version of “Shut Tight” about a year ago, but now Brooklyn’s Pamphlets have touched up the single and introduced it to the world at large. This is the perfect tune for kicking off Friday, as its both a little bit arty and definitely frantic. Musically, the band aren’t too far off from ATH faves Deeper, particularly with the way the guitar knifes through, then falls in a shimmering curtain call. The vocals from Jeremy Marquez fall somewhere in the realm of Tim Darcy and young David Byrne, so you can get the picture of what this band is all about. Keep an eye out friends.

Crystal Eyes Share Like a Movie

When we first shared news of the forthcoming Crystal Eyes LP, we were really excited by the group’s blend of pop styles, pulsing with a more frantic energy. But, on their new single, they allow the song to sort of fester and swell, like a slow-burn; this makes tons of sonic space for the band to fill in the spaces, be that the distorted guitar in the distance or the wash of atmosphere that crashes briefly into the chorus. All of this culminates in a huge burst at near the song’s end, sprinkling pop confetti down from the rafters all over the listener as if you’ve just won the game of your life. The band drop the Sweetness Restored on April 22nd via Bobo Integral.

Speedy Wunderground Announce Jane Weaver Single

If you’re not hip to what’s going on at Speedy Wunderground, can you count yourself among the hip? They just announced a new single from their series with Jane Weaver, the sound-shifting songwriter, toying with pop fans by mixing all the elements that make her utterly fascinating. It all begins with a very pop croon, steadied and seductive. Moving forward, the pulse of this tune takes on a mixture of sounds, kind of like an amalgam I’ve dubbed post-proto-punk. But, as the guitars add texture, the song moves into a purely electronic affair of sorts, reveling in its own majesty and dizzying listeners. Plus, it comes with this really great visualizer that’ll only add to that effect. Grab the 7″ HERE, but be warned, they always sell out rather quick!

Say Sue Me Return with The Last Thing Left

It’s been a hot minute since we’ve gotten anything fresh from South Korea’s Say Sue Me, but today that all changes with the announcement of a brand new LP, the Last Thing Left. This first single comes with an incredible fun video, with characters utilizing imaginary objects throughout. As for the song, well its nothing short of sunny pop, something that hits all the right notes for a Spring hit. The band still employ catchy melodies, though I like how this tune seems to have a little more openness to it, letting the melody and the hook build in the ear of the listener. If this single’s anything to go by, and you look at Where We Were Together, we’re all in for a treat when The Last Thing Left drops on May 13th via Damnably.

Breakup Haircut Share Out of My Way

When the strumming of Breakup Haircut‘s latest single kicks off, the tune seems innocent enough, like another run-of-the-mill pop tune. But, suddenly, drums began to pound, banging hard like a furious animal ready to break free; it serves the song well, forcing the band into a riotous performance that’s fueled by the memorable refrain of “out of my way I’m not getting on the night bus.” It all ends up a furious affair, with lyricism that’ll make you laugh, singing along all the way to pick it up at your local record store. They pulled the video together in a rather ramshackle fashion, with nods to horror film lighting and various other music video, highlighting the bands preference for fun and quick turnarounds. If you’re in need of a proper pop punk hit, well, look for Punk Dancing for Self Defence this July via Reckless Yes!

Listen to Spilling Yr Guts from Apollo Ghosts

Vancouver’s Apollo Ghosts are a band I’d definitely like you to get into, particularly as I myself just recently discovered the band and their new LP, Pink Tiger. Taking on the latest single, the band hit hard with this sound that’s reminiscent of Sonic Youth, using that snaking guitar line to set up the central melody for the vocals. That voice, takes on a more soothing tone, something that certainly wouldn’t have been out of place on a Pavement album. And you’re reading this, thinking its all nostalgia, but the execution and mixture of various 90s guitar sounds feels as fresh as a batch of daisies. Plus, they get bonus points for using “fuckall” as a lyric. Check out Pink Tiger today!

Blushh Share High + Album Announcement

You can always rely upon Shab Ferdowsi to deliver catchy pop rock tunes with her band Blushh, and the first listen we get from the forthcoming C’est La Vie is delightfully that! The guitar work throughout this tune holds the tune in the sugary sweet zone, churning with crisp notes until the chorus drops in with this dreaminess that feels like spinning until you’re euphorically dizzy, collapsing on your lawn with a smile. Everything about is endearing and playful; it’s got this natural innocence that’s sure to worm its way deep into your brain. The new LP C’est La Vie is scheduled for release on April 29th.

Blood Drop Brand New Single

Sadly, Blood is the band that Austin let get away (I blame Austin for that, but I’ll save my diatribe on Austin being basic-bitch indie rock for another day!). This is about the -now- Philadelphia outfit and their brand new single, which dropped a few days ago. Built atop a rolling drumbeat and these anxiety-inducing riffs, the song moves in and out of itself, slithering here and there. Frantic and emphatic, it opens up into this beautifully dreamy pop moment, offering up a mid-song ballad, albeit for a brief period of time before squirming in its seat all over again. This is why the band was always so fascinating, as they seemed indifferent to the rules and expectations…so good to see they’re still at it! They release their new Bye Bye EP on June 3rd.

Jeanines Share Don’t Wait For a Sign

It’s only March, and it seems like my record collection is being dominated by the excellent year Slumberland Records is putting out…and the Jeanines new LP might just be the icing on this early 2022 cake. On this go round, the band sort of swoosh their way into the melody, sort of creating this sideways shimmy that has you pulling off some hipster hand jive with one leg jerking this way and that. The emphatic stomp of the drums punctuates Alicia’s vocal deliver, teasing what might otherwise be deemed a chorus. I love the tempo and directional twist just before the 1 minute mark, sweeping in with this charming refrain of endearment: “you’ll find me here.” Don’t Wait for a Sign is out on April 22nd via Slumberland.
