The BVs Share I Hope There’s No Snow

It looks like the BVs latest single might have been wishful thinking, as I’ve seen several friends who have had to combat the snow this past weekend. Nonetheless, the song is a nice little driving pop ditty, steadied by a propulsive rhythm section. The guitars ring out, though they clearly seem to be dancing around the song’s core, sort of fluttering through the speakers like snowflakes falling to the ground. For me, the song gets the seal of approval with these deep vocal tones, occasionally accented by an unknown supporting vocal. It’s a seasonal ditty, sure, but hopefully it hints at the sounds to come as we await the follow-up to Cartography.

Henrik Appel Shares Mrs. Spaceman

I don’t know what it is about Henrik Appel that makes me swoon, but there’s something in his songwriting that just hits that emotional note I can’t pull away from. This song’s mostly all about his vocals and the strum of his guitar; it almost has this odd Bolan-esque quality to it. You ever just love a song and you can’t put it into words why or how, you just want to play it all day long? That’s been my experience with this new track from Henrik; you’ll find it on his new LP, Humanity, out January 8th via PNKSLM.

Lacto-Ovo Share Nu West

While Lacto-Ovo largely been quiet for the better part of two decades, but with the recent digital reissuing of Shoes & You and Tsunami Pop, the band have rekindled the flame, so to speak. In doing so, they unearthed a lost CD from a recording session meant for their third album…and today, we’re excited to give you a first listen. It’s an oddball art-pop dance party, one you might associate with your favorite Devo impersonators. One thing I love, aside from the sheer infectiousness of those hook-laden beats is that the band blend this sort of class pop chorus into it; it gives the song this warmth that sort of offsets the electronic pulse of the tune leaving you with this endearing charm you’ll want to put in your pocket to take with you! The songs being supported by our dear friends at Lost and Lonesome, hinting that the final LO chapter may yet to have been written.

Bumping New Track From The Ninth Wave

Glasgow based outfit The Ninth Wave truly came onto my musical radar during SXSW in 2019 when I interviewed them as part of our festival guide. Since that time, the band dropped their critically acclaimed debut album Infancy and released an EP entitled Happy Days! earlier this year. Staying ever busy, the band just released this banging new single today called “Everything Will be Fine”. If you were looking for a little Friday morning motivation, look no further, as this tune is full of fun energy, hope, and an overall danceable vibe. Hit play on this one and get your dance party started early.

Old Fashioned Bleeding Hearts Share Head North

I’ve been sitting on this song from Old Fashioned Bleeding Hearts for a few weeks now, waiting to share it, and it feels like the perfect way to start off a Friday…the last Bandcamp Friday of the year! In the first minute or so, you get this soft pop vibe, perfect for cruising through immense landscapes and “heading North.” At the 1:30 mark, there’s a twist, a jump up if you will, just a brief moment in time for the duo to employ some really strong hooks that soar, blowing through the song like the breeze when your windows are down. This is definitely one of those songs that just stays with you all day long.

Van Mary Share Hug

There’s no sense in keep Austin’s Van Mary as one of our own little secrets; its time Emily Whetstone and company were let out into the world…and “Hug” might just be the key to getting your attention. The song was written during the early days of quarantine, with Whetstone missing the camaraderie and joy that her friendships brought her; this might just be the most relatable tune from 2020. Musically, I love the layers, like this onion of pop waiting to be peeled by the listener. At first, the skin of the song is this darkened ballad, Whetstone working her vocals over a gentle strum; once that layer’s discarded, the song meets up with some meandering nuance before the drums take the track up a notch; it all culminates in this soaring sonic exploration that leads to the Emily’s voice winning you love with its range. You end the song feeling like you’ve been along for this journey of isolation, and you, too, are looking for that hug…this song is a hug from Van Mary; enjoy the warmth. Expect a full LP later in the Spring!

Romero Share New Single, Troublemaker

It’s funny, just when you’re about to go and pigeonhole an entire city and its musical output, something comes at you and says not so fast! Today, that band is Romero, the newest act out of Melbourne to bring the hype overseas. Now, don’t think this is your typical casual pop affair, as this is a high-energy, balls to the wall rock affair; it’s full on arena rock ready pop music, with Alana Oliver’s voice soaring with bravado over these towering riffs. It’s a huge sound, just laying in wait to take over the world with big hooks, so get your ears ready for some pop rocking sounds!

Upbeat Pop from Sunnbrella

The last few days were filled with rain and cold here in Austin, until late afternoon yesterday, when I first heard this new Sunnbrella tune. It’s immediately punching through with great energy, pounding drum work and these dancing guitar lines that move in and out allowing David Zbirka to set up the scene for the vocal entry. Those vocals, both male and female have this rather sedate presence, which kind of balances out what’s going on with the music swirling around them. Just wanted to kind of celebrate the nearing of the weekend with a fun little number so you can tap those toes!

High Tide Drifter Share Happy Trails

I’ll be honest, I don’t know too much about High Tide Drifter, a fairly new act coming out of our hometown of Austin. But, when I heard this song, I really perked up; there’s something so pure in the songwriting approach that I think most folks would find a way to cherish the notes. I keep hearing this wistfulness that’s matched up with a little swagger, delivering that emotional gut punch we all crave. Every time I try to place my finger on the song to pigeonhole or define it, I just can’t find the words; its simply a well-executed pop song that you won’t want to miss out on today.

The Skating Party Share Orange Julius

I’ve always been a fan of Gregory James’ recording project The Skating Party (Been Caught Feeling is a definite fave), so its always nice to see a new tune pop up on the radar. Today we’re sharing the hypnotic new single “Orange Julius,” which opens up with this intoxicating wash of atmospherics before James enters the pictures, using his melodic voice to add a further texture to the tune. There are some slight tonal shifts at the end of his lines that really pull you in, just giving the slightest emphasis as the notes drop off the musical cliff. This is the sort of pop that carries you away, so seems perfect for a Monday morning. Enjoy.
