The Exbats Go Riding with Paul

I’m sure folks will label it as kitsch or shtick, but I can’t really think of a band more charming and sincere than the Exbats. They seem a band destined to dwell on the outskirts of every genre, yet able to move between them all; the father/daughter-led outfit have this timelessness that’s simply irresistible. On this tune, Inez is definitely channeling 60s vocal powerhouses like Mary Weiss or Ronnie Spector. While perhaps rooted in classic pop sounds, they still manage to incorporate tons of modern touches that drag the sound into the present…be it the way backing vocals were done or the shaking close to the tune. Goner Records will help the band release Song Machine on October 13th!

A Beacon School Share KITM Video

While it may have been a few years since A Beacon School dropped a proper record, my ears are telling me that that was time perfectly spent. This tack is teases you second by second, you spend the first 45 seconds drifting with Patrick Smith’s floating voice, like that feather from Forest Gump just fluttering in the foreground. Then, the 45 second mark drops and the track begins to build, pulsing as the tension gradually builds. A quick stutter at the 1 minute mark and the tune buoyantly zooms off into this shimmering dream pop work. A little sonic toying comes into play, working with the great visual piece to tie it all into a nice little structured pop masterpiece. Uh. That euphoric eruption around 3 minutes is just this magical moment you won’t be able to pass up. Totally worth the time here, and we can likely expect the same from yoyo when it drops on October 13th via Grind Select.

Lorelle Meets the Obsolete Share Ave en Reversa Video

We’ve got to keep our International readers happy, and with that, we turn towards Mexico’s Lorelle Meets the Obsolete. Earlier this summer, the group released Datura, but today I’m stoked to share a new video from standout “Ave en Reversa.” I was hooked from the opening, dropping in this angular line that kicks in enough pop to it that you can’t help but bob your head as the hi-hat shimmies in the background. Singer Lorena moves inside those notes, playfully maneuvering with this relaxed cool that carefully drifts atop the tune. As things progress, those angular notes get a bit sharper as the band start to flex their post-punk tendencies and creativity; see the pulsating midtrack breakdown for a prime example. But, just as easily as they slide into that, they creep right back into the melodic vibe, closing out the song in style. Datura is available now via Sonic Cathedral.

Get Moving With Freedom Fry

The French-American married duo Freedom Fry has long been on our radar for their danceable, indie pop gems. While pumping out tons of hits and seeing songs placed in multiple hit shows and movies, the group also released a stunning EP entitled La Soire.Now trying to close out the summer with a potential song of the season jam, Freedom Fry just released the new single “YOLO” earlier this morning. If you weren’t up and on your feet already, this jam is sure to get you moving along to the beat.

The Ballet Share At the Bathhouse Video

You should already have the Ballet‘s Daddy Issues on your playlist, as its one of the hit pop records to have dropped this year, particularly if you imagine yourself as a fan of heavy synth pop. But, if not, we’ve got you covered, as they just dropped a fresh video for their standout single “At the Bathouse.” For me, and I’m sure Greg’s probably tired of the likeness being thrown out there, but this does feel like an early Magnetic Fields tune, albeit one dripping with hooks. That euphoria translates to the choreography created by Emmy-winner Al Blackstone, providing a voyeuristic approach to a bathhouse. But, in that Greg sees the song as detailing bathhouses as places that “can feel serious but also playful.” And in the end, the dancing alone might let you find yourself a home. So be it the groove or the video, be sure to check out Daddy Issues, available now via Fika Recordings.

 

Check Out Panic Pocket’s Ode to Mr. Big

I dare you to find a catchier ode to Sex and the City (and Mr. Big) than this new single from Panic Pocket. Driving distorted rhythms and snappy drum fills pave the way for Nat and Sophie to let their vocals intermingle. Of course, there’s a playfulness to the tune, particularly when you listen closely to all the S &C nods, though they seem pertinent in any romantic pursuit as well. All this said, and I can’t come back to why I love Panic Pocket; the vocals seem diametrically opposed; you get a sort of steady deepness in one voice, and a punkish riot girl growl on the other, set against one another in a manner that allows the joy to shine right on through. If you’re digging this, you’ll likely dig the group’s Mad Half Hour, out now via Skep Wax.

Soft Science Share Kerosene Video

When I first started listening to the new stuff from Soft Science‘s new LP, I really thought they sounded like our ATH gaze-pop act Blushing. Similarly, the group draws from a heavy wash of feedback and pummeling drum work, but then you’ve got to sort of peel that away to find the sweet candy center your ears and heart adore. That being said, Soft Science employ more of an indiepop vocal; it’s got that soft crispness that made us fall in love with acts like Heavenly or Luxembourg Signal. They’ve also got some great guitar work in the middle that really opens the song up a bit, almost nodding to more of a 90s alternative feel. So, while they’ve definitely got similarities to things I adore, I appreciate they’ve really stepped out to make the sound entirely their own. They’ll be releasing Lines via Shelflife/Fastcut/Spinout Nuggets on September 8th.

 

Tan Cologne Share Visitation Video

If you’ve been following these poorly written pages over the last few years, our adoration for Tan Cologne has been pretty obvious, so whenever something new pops up, you better believe I’m going to chime right in with my thoughts. Today, we caught wind of a new single from the duo, a preview of an EP they recorded while holding a residency in Italy. This tune is penned as a communication with otherworldly beings, providing a meditation on the meaning of pathways and borderlands in our lives. Musically, it’s as shadowy as ever, with every little note just carefully rising. You can hear light cymbal work and little synth washes moving in and out from the depths of this musical trench, crafting this intangible piece of beauty that seamlessly slips through your hands and your mind. We’ll keep you posted as we hear more about the release of the band’s residency EP via Labrador.

Pretty In Pink Share Star Video

One has to have something pretty remarkable at hand in order to completely captivate a listener by stripping a track of traditional percussive elements. In fact, Pretty in Pink really operate their latest single with little more than guitar lines and these heavenly vocals that seem to sway back and forth through your speakers, like the wind blowing across tall plains grasses. For me, I had to take a deep breath as soon as I heard the jangling guitar line dance against the quieted strum behind it; I knew I was in for something supremely moving. Those guitar lines don’t stray from one another as the tune unfolds, blanketing the tune in intertwined DIY ethos. Those vocals though, have the power to carry you on their wings, drift you off into this magical land where everything blankets you with warmth; I like the nice touch too when all three members combine near the song’s end, deepening the song’s magic. You’ll hear this track on the group’s next LP, Pillows, out in September via Little Lunch/Hidden Bay/Subjangle.

Snooper Drop Running Video

As I ease back into consistent posting here, it only makes sense that I drop in with this brand new Snooper video. We’ve previously covered the group’s singles from their forthcoming LP, and while those pieces have been short and frantic, this new single allows for the band to build on their sound, expanding the sound as guitars feud and criss-cross, all while the rhythm section drives the listener forward. Their knack for tying in the artistic side to their sound also serves the band well here, with the video illustrating just how much attention they pay to every little detail. Super Snooper drops this Friday via Third Man Records.
