Groovy New Night Beats Tune

nightNight Beats have always been a band I gravitated towards, musically speaking. I’ve managed to catch their live set on several occasions, and it always seems like they had this heavy darkness that didn’t always leak through. But, it seems like their usage of two-inch tape to record their 3rd LP, Who Sold My Generation, might leave listeners bewitched. I mean, there’s psych bands, and then there’s bands that can really just rock the psychedelia and really bend your brain; these are the types I prefer…and the kind I think of when I hear the group. Look for their new LP to come via Heavenly Recordings on January 29th.

Swaggering Rock N’ Roll from Night Beats

nightbeatsOver the last year, I’ve caught a handful of Night Beats sets, and I’ve always enjoyed myself.  There’s a bit of garage rock hipness, but also a nice little dose of psychedelia that puts them outside the range of your run-of-the-mill act. On this brand new single it seems as if the vocals are in another room entirely, which is an effect I”m personally partial to nowadays.  And, the band have obviously made an impression here in town because the Reverberation Appreciation Society has opted to pick up the band’s new record, Sonic Bloom, for a September 24th release date.  Can you dig?

Psych Fest Day One: Photos and Thoughts

Day One at Psych Fest was pretty laid back, and I’m sort of grateful that the crowds haven’t completely caught on to this unique festival; you have to go though because the people watching alone is worth the price!  This was my first time to both venues, and I was rather impressed with both the sound and the set-up, so that bodes well for both venues as Austin’s musical landscape moves into the future.

Past the break, Brian and I will share some insight into bands that played and plenty of images from Day One…

SxSW Pics: Jesus and Mary Chain @ The Belmont

Still more coverage of the conference left…

Every SxSW, I like to pick a night to just camp out at a bigger venue and take in some stuff I may already know usually with the headliner that is trying to be cool. Duran Duran palyed last year’s Wednesday line up at Stubb’s that included Yuck and Rapheal Saadiq. I chose the Belmont on the Thursday night of the conference to catch The Jesus and Mary Chain with Cold Showers, Night Beats, (a band we shall ignore) and Titus Andronicus.

It was a night of noise and feedback and awesome. I made some new friends from Brazil and in the Russian Space Program, ran into old friends in the crowd and managed to meander through a freshly remodeled and tightly packed Belmont patio room to get pics from both sides of the stage (quite a feat).

More New Music From Night Beats

Here’s another new tripped out psych song from Seattle based rock band Night Beats.  This one is called “Dial 666” and will also appear on the band’s upcoming self-titled debut LP out June 28th on Trouble in Mind Records.  In the ever growing garage/psych movement, this is an up and coming band to pay attention to.

Psych Fest Recap 2011: Part 1

The Seaholm Power Plant played host to psych, prog, indie and noise for three days, we were on hand for two of the three, picking out the best for the ATH faithful. The main stage centering the cavernous interior offered several interesting viewing angles due to the fenced off holes in the floor to the level below. Lighting throughout accentuated the scale of the interior and depth of the catacombs. Stage two was a smaller space set off to the side that remained at human body. Hit the jump for band summaries and pictures from the festival.

New Music From The Night Beats

Seattle based band The Night Beats mine as well change their address and move down to Austin, because their sound truly evokes images of some of our favorite psych rockers in town.  Ironically enough, the band will be making their way into town next weekend for the annual Psych Fest at the Seaholm Power Plant.  This new song “Ain’t Dumbo” will appear on the upcoming debut self-titled LP from The Night Beats due out June 28th on Trouble in Mind Records.
